What Is Yoga Teacher Certification
Is Yoga Certification like a License?
Certification is not a “license”. Many professions have licenses that are regulated by local, state or federal agencies. Barbers and hairdressers, tattoo artists, physicians, nurses, chiropractors, lawyers, psychotherapists, social workers, and many other professionals who provide professional services to the public must pass exams and meet professional standards in order to do business. There is no such requirement for yoga instructors. There are no laws or regulations that apply to the training, licensing or certification of yoga teachers.
What is Certification?
Certificates are given by yoga schools or yoga teachers to their students that certify that the student has completed a course of instruction. There are non-profit yoga organizations that establish certain standards for yoga teachers, and membership in these organizations by yoga schools and yoga teachers is voluntary. Yoga Alliance and The International Association of Yoga Therapists are two such organizations. Some yoga systems have their own methods of training and authorizing teachers. Anusara Yoga, Iyengar Yoga and Ashtanga Yoga are three yoga systems which maintain their own teacher training standards.

Neuroscience Behind Yoga & Meditation > > Advanced Philosophy
E-RYT 500/Yoga Therapist Erin Smith will talk about how yoga and meditation helps our nervous system respond to the environment around us. Modern society teaches us to respond from the fight or flight part of our brain, the amygdala, rather than from the frontal lobe of the brain where we find reason and logic. As a society, we tend to hangout in a sympathetic state, which can affect our judgement and short and longtime memory, which can lead ot dimensia and other neurological issues. Yoga and meditation help get our minds and bodies back to a parasympathetic state, which helps use the front lobe of the brain leading better decision making and memory.
Erin will give a review over basic philosophy as well as delve into deeper philosophy concepts. James French, E-RYT 500/Found of Lighting the Path Yoga will discuss the complexes of chakras and how to tap into them.
