Best Hot Yoga Mat: Manduka Pro Yoga Mat 6mm
One of the best overall mats we tested, the Manduka Pro Yoga Mat is just that made for pros! Specifically, pros who love nothing more than a sweatier-than-thou workout. Even if youre not a typically sweaty person, hot-yoga classes are held at temperatures ranging from 90 degrees Fahrenheit up to 108, with loads of humidity in there to boot. Point being: Youre going to be dripping, and you definitely want a no-slip mat that can withstand all that wetness. Enter: Manduka Pro Yoga Mat.
A beast in its own right, the 6-millimeter-thick mat is beloved by advanced yogis and instructors alike for its density and top and underside gripping, all of which were the reasons we felt it performed better than any other mat we tested during hot yoga. Clocking in at a whopping 7.5 pounds, the PVC mats sheer weight anchors it to the floor and ensures a stable workout. The Pros top-side texture comprises vertical and horizontal grooves that produced some of the best grip we experienced during testing, even when we had sweat dripping all over the place. The underside also has tons of grip, in the form of a rugged dot pattern that we found stayed put on both carpeted and hardwood floors.
All in all, however, we found the Manduka Pro to be an excellent mat for both hot-yoga and regular yoga devotees and thus worthy of its steep price point. Not only is it backed by a lifetime warranty from Manduka, the mat is also Oeko-Tex certified and latex-free.

Lululemon The Pure Mat 3mm Review
- Thickness: 3mm or inch. This mat is solid and thin. It does not offer extra cushioning, so for many of us, youll need something else under your knees in a low lunge for example.
- Stickiness & texture: Great grip from the get-go almost too good! Its important not to let this mat do all the work for you It has a roughish texture which is a little abrasive.
- Price: $48.00 / 55.00
- Material: Made from natural rubber and latex and it has an antimicrobial additive. There is a strong smell of rubber but its not too unpleasant.
- Eco-Friendliness: Lululemons standpoint on eco-friendliness is unclear but the mat is made out of natural rubber.
- Size & style: 26 x 71
Best Overall: Manduka Eko Lite Yoga Mat
When we asked the experts about the best lightweight yoga mat, yoga teachers kept coming back to one mat in particular: the Manduka eKO Lite. This is my mat of choice and has been for nearly six years, Chen says. Its supportive with the right amount of give without too much sponginess and great for Vinyasa classes. Although it isnt super heavy, it has enough weight to keep it in place during your practice.
At just five pounds, its also lightweight enough that Alicia Hansen, a Cleveland-based yoga teacher, likes to take it on the road. Ive put it in my checked luggage for a cross-country trip, unfolded it and it settles back out in no time. Its also one of the more affordable Manduka options, which my wallet appreciates too.

The Best Yoga Mats You Can Buy Right Now
This is a fantastic sustainable choice, made from natural tree rubber and biodegradable. The price is great for such an eco-conscious mat. With superior grip and a practical textured surface, this mat provides a strong base for any type of yoga practise. Sadly though, its only available in light colours which means that grubby stains from sweaty hands and feet may show over time. Plus you cant wash it in the washing machine or use chemicals to wipe it down meaning it may become rather stinky quickly. That said, its an affordable, great quality mat thats one of the best we’ve used – by far.
Talked about as one of the grippiest yoga mats out there, the Liforme yoga mat has lots more to offer alongside its non-slip technology. Toxic glue and plastic free, this mat is made from sustainable natural rubber with an eco-polyurethane top layer making it biodegradable. The alignment lines help to guide you in your practise proving to be especially useful for those practising at home. There really isnt much to dislike apart from its one of the heaviest on the market and is larger than most. This isnt necessarily a bad thing unless you walk or cycle to your class. And if its a cramped yoga class, having an extra inch or two width may mean your mat joins your neighbours. This mat ticks more boxes than others so its definitely worth the bigger price tag.
How To Choose The Best Yoga Mat
Pick one with plenty of grip. Many cheaply made yoga mats are slippery both on the floor and underfoot, and require you to brace and grip in your poses, says Amy Quinn Suplina, owner of Bend and Bloom Yoga in Brooklyn. You want a mat that has enough texture and grip so you can easily find your foundation without extraneous effort. Otherwise, youll end up focusing more on trying not to slip than on improving your postures.
Know which type of yoga you practice. If youre practicing the most popular style, Vinyasa, I would stay with a 4-mm or 5-mm thick mat so you dont sink into the mat and you can feel the floor underneath you, explains Christine Chen, a bestselling yoga book author and national teacher trainer. If youre sticking with restorative practices, she says, you can get away with a thicker mat. Also, consider how sensitive you are when bearing weight on your shins and knees or reclining, Quinn Suplina suggests.
Balance comfort with mobility. Good cushioning can feel amazing during longer yoga sessions, but it also tends to be bulkier and heavier when moving around town. If you mostly practice at home, having a thick mat probably won’t be an issue, but if you commute or travel a lot, you might need a thinner mator a better way to carry yours around.

Best Nonslip Yoga Mat: Manduka Eko Superlite Yoga And Pilates Travel Mat
What we love most about the Manduka eKO Superlite Yoga and Pilates Travel Mat is that if you took away its portability selling points , its a superior nonslip mat. Heres why: While its light enough to travel with, the mat still maintains enough weight to stick to the floor and stay put, whether its on hard surfaces or carpet which is rare for a thinner, lightweight mat. But the mats chief asset is the excellent grip provided by its tightly woven surface. With a slightly dimpled appearance and a tacky texture, the mat provided tons of traction and stability during even our sweatiest workouts.
While traveling might not be part of our current agendas, its certainly something were all hoping for in the near future, and if youre someone who loves to do yoga on the road or someone who lives in a small space and simply wants a yoga mat that can be easily tucked away look no further than this mat. Weighing only 2.2 pounds , the 1.5-millimeter-thick mat can be folded into a 10-inch-by-12-inch rectangle that can be neatly tucked into your tote, backpack or suitcase.
In terms of cushioning, there isnt much here, which is to be expected from a super-portable mat . If youre someone who loves a spongy mat with extra padding, this is not the option for you. But lots of advanced yogis prefer a thinner mat, as they provide greater stability, especially when practicing more active or focused poses.
Lululemon Introduces Yoga Mats And Bags Made From Mushrooms
The Canadian athletic apparel and accessories retailer unveiled its latest project today: yoga mats and bags made from Mylo, a material that is said to look and feel like leather, but is actually made from a renewable fungus that is the root structure of mushrooms.
More from WWD
As a premium athletic brand, having innovative and proprietary fabrics and other materials that help guests feel their best to perform their best is something were proud of, said Sun Choe, chief product officer at Lululemon. Sustainable innovation will continue to play a key role in the future of retail and product and for us, leveraging a material like Mylo demonstrates our commitment to creating a healthier environment through lower-impact products, while also giving us the ability to reimagine iconic pieces in our line through a sustainability lens.
Lululemon revealed plans to make products with Mylo in October when it joined the Mylo Consortium. Bolt Threads, the biotechnology company credited with creating Mylo, formed the Mylo Consortium, or a group of retailers that wanted to use the material to create more eco-friendly products. Aside from Lululemon, the Consortium also consists of Adidas, Kering and Stella McCartney.
Lululemon is actively working to help create a healthier future, Calvin McDonald, chief executive officer of Lululemon, said at the time.

Lululemon The Reversible Mat: Comfort
The Lululemon The Reversible Mat is available in assorted thicknesses, although this review only covers the 3mm mat in depth. You can also get The Reversible Mat in 5mm as well as a big option , also in 5mm. Lululemon even does a travel version called The Reversible Mat at 1.5mm.
The 3mm version offers good padding but on hard floors, those with creaky knees may prefer a thicker mat. It keeps you close to the floor in your practice which we think is a real positive – you can feel the grounding effect of standing postures and balances. However, if you find a thin mat leaves your knees a bit achy, this mat wont benefit your yoga practice and youd be better going for the 5mm version.
Aurorae Classic Mat Review
- Thickness: ¼ inch / 6.35 mm. This mat is lusciously thick without feeling unstable.
- Stickiness & texture We have a mixed jury out on this one. For those of us who do not sweat the grip seemed fine. But if you do sweat, this mat is not for a dynamic practice as you slip easily. They also have an anti-slip towel to place over this mat.. but we have not tried it. It is our favourite for Yin yoga as it supportive yet soft. Yummy is the word!
- Price: 54.95
- Material: made from specially designed memory foam. The mat is free from Phthalates, Latex and Silicone so its quite hypoallergenic.
- Eco-friendliness: The classic mat is biodegradable and made from eco-safe PER.
- Size & style: at 72 x 24 this is a good sized mat making it also suitable for the taller and wider. It available in a wide variety of colours too.
Lululemon The Reversible Mat: Design And Colours
Lululemon has kept this range simple, offering a limited amount of colour arrangements to choose from . The design on the polyurethane side is a swooshing pattern across the length of the mat, making it look like a waterfall, blending the colours. Its a calming effect but personally, we dont think the colours aid the calming aspect.
The natural rubber base of the mat, which can be used for softer practices like Yin and Restorative yoga, is one colour and usually very dark. This side provides those normal bumps you see on PVC yoga mats but a more condensed version.
As a yoga mat should be your happy place, we would like to see lighter colours in the range, bringing a sense of joy to the practice. However, we can see that by having the colour choices they have, it creates a certain elegance. There are no crazy, bright or garish colours or patterns and everything looks sophisticated because of this. The design is simple and not overbearing.
The darker colour choices also mean the mats wont become marked so easily with dirt from hands and feet over time, helping to keep it looking fresh. Lighter colour mats tend to end up with feet and hand marks at the top and bottom of the mat, after some time, that just wont budge.
With Every Atom Cork Yoga Mat
The best cork yoga mat
Reasons to avoid
The With Every Atom Cork Yoga Mat is extra large so its a great option for taller people.
This yoga mat gets lots of praise for how it looks and feels. One reviewer on TrustPilot said: Its the ultimate in yoga luxury. Many users like that the eco-friendly mat was made from sustainable resources and had antibacterial properties. Negative reviews cited problems with the mat getting easily marked and stained, particularly with sweat.
Its made from naturally grippy rubber and moisture wicking cork, so the grip actually improves the more you sweat. Its a great choice for all styles of yoga, including Ashtanga, Hatha, hot yoga and other floor-based workouts.
Its fairly lightweight and not too thick yet supportive and comfortable enough for daily practice. We love that the With Every Atom Cork Yoga Mat is vegan-friendly and made from sustainably sourced, natural and recycled materials.
Cork is naturally antimicrobial and hypoallergenic, so its also low maintenance. It tends to mark easily, but is easy to clean. Plus, when you buy an Every Atom Cork Yoga Mat the brand plants a tree. The only downside is that this yoga mat only comes in one color.

Gaiam Premium Yoga Mat
If youre a beginner yogi and arent sure youll even stick with your practice, the Gaiam Premium Yoga Mat is a great starting point. With its grippy surface, perfect cushion, and wide range of designs and patterns to suit every taste, this mat was deemed by our testers as the certified cool girl of the affordable price range and the fact that its under $30 only adds to its appeal. The downside? PVC isnt the most eco-friendly material, and its not quite sticky enough for us to recommend to anyone with a vigorous practice.
There are certainly stickier mats on the market, but compared with others in this price range, our testers gave this mat a five out of five for its grippable surface. It features textured grooves throughout, meaning your hands and feet wont slide, nor will the mat slip around on the floor. But take this baby to heated yoga and you may be telling a different story. The thing about PVC is this: When its dry, its extremely grippy, but when its wet, we found it loses grip. So if you typically take shorter, less aerobic classes, this mat is a solid choice. But in order to find an unbeatable grip, youve gotta shell out a little more moola.
At the end of the day, this mat surprised us. If youre just getting started with yoga, or you know yourself enough to admit youll be a casual practitioner at best, we think the Gaiam Premium Yoga Mat will definitely suit your needs.
