How We Chose Our Selection Of Yoga Mats
Brand There are countless rubber mats available on the market and many of them may even make their way into yoga supplies stores. However, we chose brands that specialize in making mats specifically for use during yoga routines. These brands have a reputation for exceptional quality yoga mats that provide lots of comfort and support while preventing injury during the various poses.
Quality A good yoga mat should be made of durable materials for lasting quality. After all, a true yogi will need a mat on a daily basis meaning it will get a lot of wear. A good quality mat will not only last for quite a while, it will not lose its shape or cushioning effect for many years. Thats why we looked at quality before any of the other selection criteria.
Durability Yoga mats see a lot of strenuous stretching and posing so you need something that is durable and made to last. The more durable and strong the materials are in the mat, the safer it is for the yogi. We looked at mats that are particularly strong and reliable for everyday use over an extended period of time.
Price When putting together this selection of yoga mats, our aim was to cater to most budgets. Some people only want a simple, convenient and well-priced exercise mat, while others want a high-end mat for more continuous and rigorous use. The price is just as important as many of the other criteria we looked at in a mat so we aimed to find a price that suited the features and quality.
Best Yoga Mat For Beginners: Liforme Original Yoga Mat
The Liforme Original Yoga Mat is a great mat on its own, not to mention fancy we love the smooth, almost silky top side and dense, 4.2-millimeter-thick natural rubber cushion. An investment, sure, but its alignment markers are a true highlight not found on most other mats. Giving cues to newbie and pro yogis alike, the subtle design of the mat works as a cheat sheet for beginners, making hand and foot placement much steadier during your yoga practices, especially for those of us who are getting our namaste on from home, without the positioning help from a live instructor.
Available in five happy colors , the mat features more than a dozen indicators from top to bottom, including end-to-end lines that keep hands and feet parallel lengthways, reverse points that keep your hands and feet even when on your back, central lines that keep you centered widthways and 45-degree lines that align your back heels when in standing postures. Having used these markers in our own workouts, we felt more confident as we glided through the motions, knowing that each of our poses was not only accurate but also safe, preventing any unwanted injuries that could occur when left to our own devices. Those lines also helped us to achieve optimal results and learn exactly where we should be on the mat and thus how our bodies should feel in those positions.
Now Available With Our Built
As yoga instructors, were focused on helping our students achieve their best results.
Thats weve created an alignment system that can act as your own personal trainer. Use the built-in alignment lines to:
- Ensure proper technique, for maximum safety and effectiveness.
- Allow you to focus on your body instead of wondering if youre aligned correctly or not.
- Make sure you arent contributing to imbalances, or aligning yourself differently on one side vs the other.
- Prevent pain or discomfort in your knees, back, and shoulders.
- Help you prevent injury from improper movement patterns over time.
- Get you better results in less time.
Heres how it works:
The markings on this mat are reference points. They are not direct foot or hand placement markers because it varies from person to person.
These markings are universal they work for everybody. Thats because no matter what your mobility levels are, your feet will always turn out at the same angle for certain positions, and your goal is still to create certain lines with the body.

Some Things To Keep In Mind:
Too much wrinkle in the skin on the wrist while in any pose indicates that you are applying too much pressure on your joints and should ease up8.
When your extremities start turning white, that means there is a blockage or constriction somewhere, and blood isnt getting to where it needs to go8. Move out of the pose and find whats causing restriction of blood flow.
The surface you choose to practice on can make a difference on your joints. Hard surfaces can be difficult to practice on bare for it can be hard on the knee and wrist joints9. Having cushioning like a yoga mat or two on these surfaces can help in minimizing pain or pressure. Much like the feet, the weight should be distributed evenly between the hands. Not doing so can result in sinking in the wrist.
Review Of Alignment Yoga Mats
When you first start doing yoga, there is a lot of new information to take in. Remembering the names and basic shapes of the poses is first and foremost for new yogis. Your teacher may get into more detail about alignment, but in a group class, the teacher can’t get to every student to correct them in every pose. Yet, alignment is so important, and it’s better to create good habits than to try to correct bad ones later.
So what’s the conscientious yoga student to do? Well, there are several yoga mats on the market that try to help you establish the correct alignment for yourself.
Alignment mats for yoga have markings on the surface on the mat, so they’re an easy way to help you position your body correctly. When comparing brands, consider things like the thickness, material, traction, size, and of course, price.
Read on to see if using one of these mats might enhance your yoga practice and which one will suit you best, plus check out the comparison chart below for a quick overview of the pertinent vital statistics.

Q: How Do You Clean A Yoga Mat
A: Like any item we use with any degree of regularity, a yoga mat will also need to be cleaned. One of the simplest ways to clean a yoga mat is in the washing machine. If you can get your mat into the machine, then all you need is a small amount of a mild detergent and wash the mat on a cold, gentle setting. Keep in mind though, that even if your yoga mat can fit in the machine, you need to check the manufacturers care instructions before you try this.
If youre not comfortable with machine washing your mat, all you need is a spray bottle with a few drops of detergent. Spray over your mat and wipe clean. If your mat is a little on the smelly side, you may need to dilute some baking soda with a touch of detergent and give it a good rub down.
There are two important things to remember when you are cleaning your yoga mat. Firstly, you should always follow the cleaning process with a wipe down with a clean, damp cloth to remove any detergent residue and secondly, always allow your mat to completely air dry before rolling it up again.
How To Find Your Neutral:
- Begin in Mountain Pose with your feet about hip width apart, then slowly hinge at the hips and fold forward
- From your Forward Fold, bend the knees generously and engage your core as you come back into Mountain Pose.
- From standing, press into your feet as you stack your knees over your ankles, your hips over your knees and your shoulders over your hips. Your chin is the last to rise and it rests over the collar bone
This, my friend, is your neutral.

Best Yoga Mat Overall: Lululemon Reversible Mat 5mm
Lululemons Reversible Mat topped our list for a lot of reasons, chief among them that the mat has two sides, making it the most versatile option we tested. After all, who doesnt love a twofer? Users can choose between a smooth or textured mat , and we found that regardless of which side you use, the mat provides superior stability its hand and feet gripping is unmatched, and it never slipped when placed on hardwood or carpeted flooring.
The mats top layer is coated with polyurethane, which we found to be excellent at absorbing sweat, and it feels silky smooth under your hands and feet, with a sticky effect thats great for sweatier workouts. The textured natural rubber base layer is definitely geared more toward low-sweat workouts but provides equally superior traction when in use.
We found the Reversible Mats 5 millimeters of cushioning ample enough to provide support to sensitive areas , masking the hard floor underneath. Its also slightly larger than the standard yoga mat , coming in 3 inches longer and 2 inches wider than most enough to provide you a bit more coverage without being too huge. That said, if you do want huge , this exact mat comes in a much bigger format.

Features To Look For In A Yoga Mat
Support Yoga is a wonderful way to strengthen your muscles and your bones. Its practically zero impact and the risk of injury is minimal. If your yoga mat provides you with the right support when you are practicing, you should be able to move from one position to another with relative ease and without losing your footing. More importantly, when you are lying on your back, the higher the density, the more support and cushioning you will have to support your spine. This will not only be better for your back, but it will also make the poses and stretches more comfortable to perform.
Grip The grip of a yoga mat is often referred to as the stickiness factor due to how well you can securely plant your feet into the mat during a pose. A successful yoga position like the Warrior pose depends on keeping stable for the duration of the pose, before you seamlessly shift into another one. The last thing you want to be doing is slipping and sliding or losing your balance. This can result in injury. A good workout mat for yoga has great grip so that your feet and hands feel almost glued to the mat when you plant them in the required position. This allows you to align your body perfectly into the pose to get the most benefits out of your routine.
Q: What Does Pvc Free Mean
A: When we refer to something as being PVC Free it means it does not contain polyvinyl chloride. This is the substance most plastic and rubber products are made of and during production releases dioxins into the environment. Dioxins have been linked to cancers, reproductive, developmental and immune disorders. Choosing PVC Free products means you can avoid this substance and the health risks that come with it.

Business Lessons I Learned On My Yoga Mat
Founder, #LifeHacks Speaker Series | Founder, Fabulous Shoe Night
For the last 3 of the past six years, as I was in the midst of the onslaught of a prolonged series of personal and professional storms, I rediscovered yoga. I thought of it as a fun thing to do with a friend, a way to stay in shape, and that perhaps it might be the road to feeling a little more Zen here and there.
God knows, I needed some Zen in my life.
Looking back, I see that I went in with more than a bit of an inflated sense of ego, for I had been working out, doing different things, for my entire life. From my years of working out with a personal trainer, to 5+ years of Karate, some Pilates, Zumba , and yoga on and off for years, I thought of myself as knowledgable in the importance of staying fit. Out of all these disciplines I tried, I really liked yoga, practiced sporadically for about 5 years, and thought I was more than half-way decent at it.
In fact, I thought I was good. Really good.
Joining my friend at a 4 week fundamentals beginners class, I naively thought that I would not only go to support her, but that the instructor would immediately see that I was no newbie, and perhaps even ask me to demonstrate proper form on some of the more advanced poses for the rest of the class.
Ummm . that didnt work out quite as I expected.
I learned that I was doing everything wrong, as in everything including the most basic of basics such as standing and even breathing.
The Yoga Mat Tips And Advice
- Beware of toxins in your mat. Some yoga mats will give off a toxic smell, and while most are harmless, be sure to check with the company to see what they used in production. PVC yoga mats can give off potentially harmful toxins, so be careful when you purchase your yoga mat.
- Grip is so important. It can be extremely dangerous to use a yoga mat that doesnt have the right texture for maximum grip.
- Padding is something to really think about in combination with the floor you are using for your routine. If you are on wood floors , then youll want a well-padded yoga mat.
- Think twice before pinching pennies. That cheaper yoga mat will wear out more quickly than you think and may cause twice as much damage to the environment versus the mat that has marked durability from its consumers.
