Highest Quality Yoga Mat
Jade Harmony Professional 3/16-Inch Yoga Mat
JadeYoga began making yoga mats in 2000 after they realized that there werent any great non-slip yoga mats on the market. After that point, their product was born, and they havent slowed down since. This 3/16-inch yoga mat is terrific for anything from light stretching to hot yoga. The slip resistance on the mat works really well, even with sweat on it. The cushioning is thick and comfortable, and not overbearing to the point where its absorbing a ton of heat and perspiration. JadeYoga mats are made with a open-cell, natural rubber thats friendly for the environment with zero unnatural ozone depleting substances. The mat also washes really easily with soap and water. It comes in two sizes and a variety of colors, weve pictured the purple mat above.
- Slip resistance, great for hot yoga or other class varieties
- Super thick for extra comfort
- Easily washable
- Good balance of cushion and traction
- JadeYoga plants a tree for every mat sold
Things we dont like:
- Distinct rubbery smell out of the box, but it fades after one or two uses

Product Origin and Manufacturer Information
One company that Ive fallen in love with over the years is Jade Yoga. This is because I really like the companys ethos, overall commitment to the environment, and the care they put into their products. The company began selling yoga mats in 2002, but its roots go back to the 1970s when Jade Industries offered non-slip rubber rugs and carpet mats. It only made sense for Jade Industries to specialize in yoga products since many yogis already used the rug pads as yoga mats.
Yoga mats made with sustainable materials like those used by Jade Yoga have everything youre looking for. You get a high quality mat with a reliable grip, and I also love that its comfortable and available in many colors.
One thing the company really prides itself on and cares a lot about is creating products from sustainable materials. Its fortunate for them that natural rubber is the most durable and most effective yoga mat material. With every product sold, they want to give back to the Earth and leave the planet better than they found it.
Because Jade Yoga mats are made from trees, they decided to plant a tree for every mat sold. Since 2006, they have planted over one million trees through their partnership with Trees for the Future.
My Thoughts and Review
In the end, they created the Jade Yoga Harmony line, which is comfortable, non-slip, and all-natural. Through nature, Jade Yoga helps yogis find peace with their inner nature.
How We Tested The Yoga Mats
To make our list of the best yoga mats, members of the Verywell Fit editorial team tested 16 yoga mats in The Verywell Testing Lab to see how they performed in key areas including unboxing padding and thickness grip and feel portability, storage, and care, and overall value. Seven testersincluding a certified yoga instructor, certified personal trainer, certified barre instructor, and four other experienced yogisspent an entire day doing more than 160 sun salutations. Prior to our first Mountain Pose, we unrolled the mats and took note of any lingering chemical smells and evaluated how well the mats laid flat. Our testers were keenly observant of how well the mat stayed flat under their hands and feet throughout the test.
We tested each mat twice through a guided vinyasa flow. Before the second test on each mat, each tester sprayed their hands and feet with water to see how the mats would hold up to moisture from external factors like sweat and humidity. We evaluated the padding and thickness of the mat and made note of how supportive the mat felt under our hands, feet, joints, and head throughout a series of poses during both tests. We also focused on the grip and feel of each matin both dry and wet conditionsnoting how much our hands and feet slid around in poses like Downward Facing Dog.

Natural & Organic Yoga Mat Wash Cleaner
New Jersey, USA |
Product Origin and Manufacturer Information
Aurorae was founded in 2009 by a very resilient and respectable Yogi named Dennis Ingui. After surviving a battle with cancer, he looked to both apply himself to a challenge and build something that would aid the recovery and rebuilding of his physical form. What he came up with was a company that creates helpful products and supplies for yoga enthusiasts at all levels.
While his organic yoga mat cleaning spray is indeed US made, the yoga mats his company Aurorae offers are made in Taiwan, so beware of the origin of the products in their store if you get to wandering about.
My Thoughts and Review
This 100% organic, USA-made product uses essential oils to naturally clean, restore, and refresh your yoga mat. It contains nothing that will dry out or damage your yoga mat like alcohol, and instead, acts as a protective barrier and as an added bonus, can add a nice scent to the mat.
Of course, when using a liquid-based yoga mat cleaner, youll need to wait for it to completely dry, but with the essential oils, it seems to dry rather quickly. Their four trademark scents are Lavender, Classic, Eucalyptus, and Citrus.

Cotton Yoga Mat Material

A cotton yoga mat will last a lifetime, you can wash it as much as needed. It gets a greater grip when it gets wet with sweat. It is biodegradable and you can up-cycle it at the end of its life. You can use a cotton yoga mat for any type of yoga. Unfortunately, the disadvantage compared to other non-fabric mats is the cushioning, so you may want to use it in combination with a cork mat or natural rubber mat.

What Can I Do With My Old Yoga Mat
Hugger Mugger Tapas Original Yoga Mat
Salt Lake City, Utah, USA |
Product Origin and Manufacturer Information
Another yoga mat I own and love is made by Hugger Mugger. The Hugger Mugger Yoga Products company was founded in 1986 in Salt Lake City, Utah by Sara Chambers. Chambers, a custom furniture builder, was trained by local Iyengar Yoga teachers Cita Mason and David Riley before attending her first weekend workshop with the late Mary Dunn.
Chambers was inspired by a story that you can read more about on the Hugger Mugger website here. In a nutshell, she saw a fellow yoga enthusiast at a workshop using items that werent customary at the time to hold difficult yoga poses, and this sparked her enthusiasm to innovate within the Yoga space.
Chambers kicked off her career in creating products for yoga after making Iyengar-inspired yoga props in her basement. Hugger Mugger was named after the shorts she designed early on that inspired her. She went on to develop many items for use in a yoga studio such as sturdy yoga blocks, yoga apparel, and of course, the Tapas Yoga mat.
After growing rapidly, Hugger Mugger moved into a larger facility in 1989. To expand the business, she partnered with David Chamberlain in 1997. Although they are both retired now, the business continues to honor its original vision which was to provide innovative, premium-quality yoga products and develop a global community of yoga enthusiasts.

What If Im Slipping How Do I Break In My New Yoga Mat
Its not uncommon for your mat to be a bit slippery at first, as every new yoga mat comes with a film over it from the manufacturing process. Our customers find that best way to break in and soften their mat is with regular use. Typically after a few weeks you will notice a difference. Keep in mind that you want a small amount of slippage in your yoga mat so that you can transition between Asana smoothly, and without getting stuck!
What Do We Mean By Buy A Mat We Plant A Tree

While it has always been our goal to make the best performing yoga mat on the market and we are very proud that Harmony is made with natural rubber, a renewable resource, contains no PVC or ozone depleting substances and is made in the United States in compliance with US environmental laws — we felt we could and should do even more. We looked for a partner to help us give back to the earth and found Trees for the Future to be the right choice. What we like about Trees for the Future is that they work with local communities on projects that are environmentally and economically sustainable. They are not about going in and dictating what they are going to do, doing it and walking away. They engage the local community which leads to a project that can continue long after Trees for the Future has left. Trees for the Future works to develop and implement programs to improve living standards for the participants, by the careful management, rather than the exploitation, of our natural resources. Through this partnership with Trees for the Future, we plant a tree for every yoga mat we sell.

What Should You Look For In A Non
Now that you know what to avoid, what should you look for in a non-toxic yoga mat? Research on the dangers of yoga mats isnt standard, but their chemicals are proven to cause reproductive harm and toxicity.
When looking for your next non-toxic yoga mat, avoid:

Natural Rubber Yoga Mats
Like cork, natural rubber is an ideal material for yoga mats, and not to mention flip flops, as I wrote about in my post about eco-friendly flip flops. Unlike synthetic rubber, natural rubber is harvested from rubber trees.
The rubber harvesting process can be done sustainably and involves tapping into the tree to remove the sap from the bark, which does not harm the tree. Thus, buying products made from natural rubber helps to keep rubber tree forests from being cut down.
How Do I Clean My Yoga Mat

For regular mat maintenance and routine cleaning, we recommend wiping your mat down with a damp cloth on a weekly basis. If you have a vigorous practice, or are doing hot yoga, we recommend doing so after each use.
We also recommend using our plant-based mat wash which is specially designed for natural rubber yoga mats and can be purchased here! We do not recommend any other cleaners be used on our mats.
The really important thing is to NEVER use alcohol, petroleum based solvents or high concentration essential oils on your mat. Unfortunately these cleaning products adversely impact the natural rubber in our mats, causing it to break down and dry out. Essential oils also may cause your mat to become slippery. We have found that many yoga mat sprays and natural cleaners on the market do have high concentrations of such essential oils.
For blankets and rugs: Wash colors separately in cold water and hang to dry as items may shrink in the wash.
