Reason #4 Bonus Reason: Its Gentle No
I would be remiss if I did not mention the fact yoga is gentle on your body. Its not even low-impact its NO-impact which means its joint-friendly and wont hurt like other higher-impact forms of exercise as long as youre doing the proper technique.
So many people I talk with have done P90x, bootcamp style, or HIIT workouts, but had to give them up due to the pain and discomfort they were experiencing in your body. If your exercise hurts you to the point that youre dreading your next workout, thats not a good workout for you!
Man Flow Yoga is awesome because not only will you get a great workout that delivers results increasing your strength, building muscle, and helping to lose weight but youll also feel great. And, you can use these programs & workouts to prepare your body for more intense, higher impact exercise, so eventually you can go back to those types of exercises that were giving you problems before, and youll be able to do them without pain, using the foundational of strength, flexibility, and proper muscle activation youve built with Man Flow Yoga.
Seek Out A Qualified Teacher
It’s important to find a trained instructor who understands the unique challenges faced by the 55-plus crowd. Yoga Alliance maintains a voluntary registry of yoga teachers throughout the U.S. who meet certain standards. Also, Yoga for Seniors offers a directory of instructors who have undergone special training to enable them to adapt yoga programs specifically for older adults.
Ask potential teachers how long they’ve been leading classes and whether they have any experience teaching seniors or people with health issues. If possible, observe an actual class to get a sense of the teacher’s techniques. And once you choose an instructor, be sure to tell him or her about any physical limitations you have, such as arthritis, balance problems, back pain, or high blood pressure.

Supta Padangusthasana Or Reclining Hand To Big Toe Pose
Reclining Hand to Big Toe is a fantastic yoga pose to allow a slow and gentle opening of the body. In a reclined position, we can really focus on our breath and releasing tension.
This pose opens the low back and hamstrings and is helpful to those with high blood pressure. It also helps stimulate the prostate gland and improve digestion. How to practice Reclining Hand to Big Toe:
- Begin on your back with the legs extended long
- Bring your right knee towards your chest, loop a yoga strap around the arch of the right foot and extend it toward the ceiling. If you dont have a strap available, just straighten into the leg as much as you can comfortably
- Keep your shoulders on the mat and keep the left leg relaxed on the floor
- Breathe here for a few minutes
- Repeat the sequence with the other leg
The Yoga Retreat And Yoga For Men Over 50

My brother was already practising yoga so when he went to Thailand he opted for two or three yoga sessions per day rather than just one.
He was gradually able to cut down on his medicine as he found his blood sugars stabilising and the weight falling off. Since his return he has replaced the high meds for a very low medication while still keeping track of his blood sugar levels.
His whole physic has changed. His arms have muscles a weight lifter would be proud of, and his belly muscles could be described as a six pack. Hes trim and slim and fit and healthy.
How is all this possible?
Yoga for men over 50 is one part of the puzzle and the other part is the nutrition and detox.
So if youre a guy, get over the image that yogas just for girls because it isnt. The problem is that its become so stereotyped that you may be forgiven for thinking it isnt macho. Not true!

Yoga For Over 50 Increases Blood Flow
Linked to heart health is the fact that yoga can help your circulation by increasing blood flow, improving the amount of oxygen that gets to your cells, particularly to your hands and feet. This, in turn, helps your body function better. Yoga boosts the levels of haemoglobin and red blood cells, and also thins the blood, reducing the risk of blood clots. Poses that involves twists wring out venous blood from organs, allowing oxygenated blood to flow in.
What Happens When A Guy In His 50s Tries Yoga
Its actually not just about woo-woo and inner peace and spirituality.
There was a time when I was obsessed with minutes. Getting my marathon time to 3:20 to qualify for Boston, or getting my half-marathon time down to 1:30 just because that seemed cool and hard to do. Now I am obsessed with inches, specifically, four of them, which is the current distance between my heel and the mat while Im doing a downward-facing dog.
Yes, this is another column about an old man discovering yoga.
These are the reasons, in no particular order, why I have resisted doing what everybody advised me to do, and pick up yoga: Its boring and easy, and boring because its easy. Its for girls. Its all about woo-woo and inner peace and spirituality, and I dont go for that. And, I just dont bend that way.
As any other man would tell you, the first three are just a smokescreen for the last. No self-respecting man would ever attempt something he knows hell fail at, because, in fact, we dont actually respect ourselves enough to try. So I wasnt going to go anywhere near a yoga studio until such time as I could touch my toes with legs straight, and that wasnt happening in this lifetime.
I would like to do that, I thought.
But the final step? A yoga studio opened down the block from me. And they offered me a week for free. And it was January in Chicago. I was willing to sign up just to sit in the hot studio.

Ardha Kapotasana Or Half Pigeon Pose
Half Pigeon Pose can be a challenge if you have tight hips, but is also very beneficial for the hips. This pose helps you find length in the hamstrings, glutes, adductors and hip flexors.
Those who are active in a lot of physical activity and carry heavy objects will greatly benefit from this yoga pose. Half Pigeon is a favorite among yoga practitioners because when we open our tight hips, we are able to find relief in other areas like the lower back.
Adho Mukha Svanasana Or Downward Facing Dog
Downward Facing Dog has become a staple in our yoga practice, and for good reason! This pose appears simple but can be very challenging. Down Dog gives the body well-rounded benefits and specifically strengthens your back, hips, calves, hamstrings, and shoulders.
Its a great yoga pose for men because its a full body stretch, a great warm-up and also helps quiet the mind. How to practice Downward Facing Dog:
- Begin in a tabletop position and tuck the toes as you lift your hips up and back
- Your wrist creases should be parallel to the top of the mat and the fingers pointed forward
- Come onto the toes, bend the knees and lift your hips towards the ceiling. With a flat back, slowly straighten the legs to form an upside-down V shape
- Your head and neck are relaxed as you remain here and connect to your breath

Utkatasana Or Chair Pose
Chair Pose or Utkatasana can be arduous even for the extremely fit male. This pose builds strength in the ankles, shoulders, quadriceps and glutes. This yoga pose is also great for building stability and stimulating the abdominal organs. How to practice Utkatasana:
- Begin standing at the top of your mat with your feet hip-distance apart
- Inhale your arms overhead and as you exhale, bend the knees and lower your pelvis down as if you are sitting on a chair
- Bring the weight into the heels, keep the core engaged and the shoulders relaxed
- Arms can remain at heart center, reaching overhead, or reaching forward and parallel to the ground with palms facing down
- Be sure to continue to breathe as you hold this pose

How Often Should I Do Yoga
Its beneficial to do yoga at least once each week.
In midlife and post-midlife, the weekly mobility workout be it swimming, pilates, yoga, or stretching and mobility drills becomes the foundation of your entire fitness regimen.

Gaining Excess Weight Is Common In Older Guys
Muscle mass is a metabolically active tissue.
Other than excess calorie intake, one of the main reasons why guys over 50 find that they pile on the fat pounds is that the loss of muscle mass from lack of strength training means that metabolic rate takes a nosedive.
It might be that youre here because of a more gradual onset of belly fat. Or your starting point might be sarcopenic obesity the combination of decreased muscle and older adult obesity.
Either way, gym workouts using strength training will help bring your metabolic rate to where it needs to be.
Not only that, but lifting weights is a great way to up your daily fat burning. Thats because it can enhance fat oxidation for up to 48 hours after a workout .
Thats a great way to keep your calorie burn ticking over at a faster rate.
