Weight Loss: More Proof That Yoga Works

One of the first studies conducted on human beings that measures the effects of yoga on weight was published in Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine and guess what the researchers concluded? Yoga helps you lose weight. Lead author of the study, Dr. Alan Kristal, states that he and his colleagues at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle found that practicing yoga for four or more years for a minimum of 30 minutes at least once a week was associated with a 3.1 pound lower weight gain among people who were normal weight at age 45.

Over a 10-year period, the researchers gathered data on 15,500 subjects between ages 45 and 55. They found that in this age group, it is a common pattern for people to gain about a pound a year. However, those that practiced yoga gained less weight. And, the overweight subjects in the group that participated in a regular yoga practice lost on average at least 5 pounds. Those that didnt, however, actually gained 14 pounds in that same 10-year period.

Co-author of the Fred Hutchinson Research Center study, Denise Benitez, and founder of Seattle Yoga Arts, agrees. Most people practice yoga in a way thats not aerobic enough to burn a lot of calories, so there has to be some other reason .

Yoga was refined and developed by the Rishis and Brahmans who documented their training in the Upanishads. This practice was later developed over several years to what now is practiced as Yoga. It Helped Me Burn Calories While Gaining Lean Muscle

Although all types of yoga are effective when it comes to burning calories, improving flexibility and muscle tone, calming the mind, and providing a feeling of inner peace, if your goal is to lose weight, certain practices are more effective than others.

In order to burn fat and keep it off, I focused on power yoga and vinyasa flow.

These are both fast-paced flows that provide the perfect mixture of cardio and strength-training. The dual combination is a potent cocktail geared toward effective fat burning and increased lean muscle mass. These two types of yoga enable the body to burn anywhere from 400 to 600 calories per hour. This is equivalent to the number of calories burned during a typical hour in the gym!

Yoga Can Help With Mindful Eating

Youre strengthening more than just your muscles on your yoga mat, says Sat Bir Singh Khalsa, PhD, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston and director of research at Yoga Alliance.

When youre holding a posture for an extended period of time, youre connecting with how your body feels, Dr. Khalsa says. Your instructor may be asking you to monitor your breath and pay attention to what your mind and body are telling you, which is a way of learning and practicing mindfulness.

And practicing mindfulness on your yoga mat can help when it comes to practicing mindful eating habits, too. Mindful eating is recognizing hunger cues and limiting binge eating. Over time you may even zero in on which foods make you feel fueled and energized, and which ones have more negative effects , Khalsa says. And its all of these behaviors that can help you stick with a diet or weight loss eating plan or in making healthier food choices overall.

Khalsa points to a review published in July 2015 in the International Journal of Yoga that found that yoga has been linked to changes in eating behavior, specifically cutting back on dietary fat and adding more fresh vegetables, whole grains, and soy-based products.

This is where yoga shines, Khalsa says. Its not just about the physical activity youre doing. Its about listening to your bodys cues.

Crockford suggests searching online, and she points to the Hatha style as a good place to start. Its typically not as intense as a Vinyasa flow class, but its also not an Im-going-to-lay-on-the-floor-and-maybe-fall-asleep class, she said. She recommends ensuring the person youre learning from has certification in the type of yoga theyre practicing.

You can try a 10- or 20-minute online class to get more familiar with the postures and moves before trying an in-person class. You can also try different styles and different instructors to see what you like and what feels better in your body.

Is It Possible To Lose Weight By Practising Yoga

Short answer, yes. Regular movement and being in a nutrient-focused calorie deficit is the key to healthy weight loss and yoga can absolutely play a part in that. However, it’s a much more holistic process than just calories in calories out: ‘It creates a deeper awareness of your physical and mental state, linking the breath to the movement of the poses ,’ explains yoga teacher Alexandra Baldi, founder of Compass Chelsea.

‘This deeper awareness creates mindfulness and a greater intuition with your body, two key factors essential for weight loss whether it’s making healthier eating choices or knowing when to pull back to prevent too much cortisol in the body, a serious detriment to weight loss,’ she says.

And the science backs Baldi up: The stress hormone cortisol can be a major inhibitor to weight loss, as shown by a 2016 study of overweight women, published in the American Journal of Managed Care. The research showed that restorative sessions, or Yin yoga, can produce the same weight loss results over 12-weeks as other forms of yoga.

But how? Well, by lowering cortisol levels by regularly unwinding through a consistent yoga practice, the women were able to successfully lose body fat.

If you’re looking for pure calorie burn, our experts agreed that fast-paced Vinyasa yoga is the practice to choose. “A good Vinyasa class will take you through a variety of movements, with a focus on integrating your core and weight-bearing on your hands and feet,” Lara explained. Imagine a classic flow from plank to triceps push-up to Upward Facing Dog รข you’re getting a core burn, working your triceps, then using your arms to hold up your bodyweight as you stretch. This kind of weight-bearing move “increases heart rate and builds muscle,” Liza told POPSUGAR. The more muscle you build, the more calories you’ll burn even after you’re done exercising.

Power yoga is another good choice, Jorianne told POPSUGAR, though it’s more intense and better suited for people who are already in good shape. “In power yoga, there is less meditation and more of a focus on standing poses and faster-paced movement,” she explained. Your heart will pump even harder than in a Vinyasa class, which is good news for losing weight Liza recommended aiming for a heart rate that’s 55 to 85 percent of your maximum to get the most calories burned out of a class.

A more gentle yoga class, such as Hatha, won’t burn as many calories. But it can benefit your mental health and decrease stress levels while helping you be more mindful, all of which have weight-loss benefits as well.
