Experience Above All Else
In my twenty years of practicing, Ive learned that book knowledge can only get you so far.
Practice teaching on other training participants is good. However, in order for teachers to truly learn and grow they must actually be teaching to real live students.
Think about your own practice.
Was your main concern when selecting a class about whether or not the teacher was registered with Yoga Alliance?
An RYT designation after someones name does not guarantee they are a great teacher.
My own knowledge came through a mentorship. Yoga Alliance was not yet formed and formal teacher training programs were a distant idea. The fact that both my mentor and I never went through an organized/formalized 200-hour yoga teacher training program does nothing to lessen our experience and ability.
Time and experience made us better teachers.
To Register With Yoga Alliance
Ultimately each teacher must decide how important being an RYT is to them. Do your research. Only you can know if its a step you want to take after graduating from teacher training.
Talk to your favorite teachers and find out whether they registered with the Yoga Alliance. Youll probably find the score similarly split.

How Yoga Schools Get Reviewed
During the RYT application process, all trainees are required to review the school, staff, and the yoga program they completed. The survey asks trainees to provide feedback on:
- Whether the syllabus reflects what was taught during the training
- Whether the training met the outlined learning objectives
- Whether the number of Lead Teacher Contact hours matched the course description
- Whether or not they would recommend the teacher training
Trainees also have an option to leave general comments and this is when things get interesting.
Please Note: Most Yogauonline Courses Qualify For Non
Yoga Alliance currently has two systems for submitting continuing education hours: Through the old system and on their new YACEP system. Please note that YogaUOnline’s courses are not offered via YACEP, so you will need to submit hours through the old system. Below, please find the Yoga Alliance guidelines for this and how to submit your hours.

Thank You For Sharing This Journey With Me
Its official, completed my 200 hour yoga teacher training with . Without sounding cliché, this journey was life changing. When we think of yoga we often only think of the physical practice, poses, turning oneself into a pretzel! Its the western way of thinking, and we forget about the connection to the mind and soul. We forget that yoga is also about the breath, meditation, energy systems and the power of what this connection can bring to our lives. I am full of gratitude! I have found a deeper purpose from this journey and I look forward to what lies ahead to help others live a more healthy, and meaningful life.
To all my teachers Bente, Maria, Sean, Rachel, Analu, Magdalena thank you for inspiring me, I have a light inside that is shining brighter then ever! And to my fellow classmates, thank you for sharing this journey with me, for being vulnerable, and for being courageous! I do not believe we came together by chance, but more so to each learn and grow from one another.

It Has Been A Journey That I Will Be Forever Grateful For
It forced me dive into myself & is helping me to begin to establish a relationship between my physical body, my mind and my soul.
Some days I thought were rock bottom … but it only made me realize that was part of the journey, the journey of trusting myself of becoming my own hero the person who Ive always been but have never really trusted! All these things I see as signs from the universe telling myself to trust ME to believe in ME and to hear ME … to L O V E me as I am and accept all the little flaws that comes with being a human and all.
But I couldnt have done it without all these beautiful souls, these magical humans who were always there to listen to just one more story of why Im crying right now or to give me some ibuprofen when my muscles ached or to pay for a cab ride back to the hotel when I didnt have any more cash on me and didnt sweat it cause it happens to all of us or that person who believed in me more than I did when I finally landed that tri-pod headstand and says I told you, you could do it! Or that person who held my hand while I got stitches for the first time & for that Im so thankful to you all .
Phd Kinesiology With An Emphasis In Exercise Physiology Ryt
As a child who was raised among athletes, I have always loved playing sports and being physically active. Without hesitation, I studied Exercise Science for my undergraduate degree to gain more knowledge about human movement sciences. Then I went on to earn my Ph.D. degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Exercise Physiology from Iowa State University. I have taught many courses in the field of Exercise Science. Throughout my education and career, I primarily focused on physical fitness, but truly felt there was a lack of connection and balance between the physical body and mind.
Then I started wondering how to heal the distressed body, while also thinking about how to reconnect the body and mind. One of the solutions that I found was the study of yoga. As I started to practice more yoga, my physical body was able to start to connect with my mind, and ultimately, find the balance in between. Since then, I have loved practicing yoga, which lead me to earn the 200-hour San Diego Miramar College Certification of Performance in Yoga and the 200-hr Yoga Alliance Certificate to teach and spread the power of yoga to others.
Lastly, I love spending time with my husband and our three kids. I love spending time outdoors, on the beach and in the nature in our sunny San Diego. I currently teach yoga activity classes at San Diego Miramar College. I hope you join the great journey of yoga with me and the rest of our program.

What Is A Registered Yoga Teacher
What does it mean to be a Registered Yoga Teacher ?
1. Completing a Yoga Alliance approved teacher training program like Purple Lotus Yoga.2. Obtaining a certificate of completion from that program.3. Sending a copy of that certificate to the YA.4. Paying an annual fee to YA which allows you to use the designation of RYT.5. Being added to their registry of teachers.
Voila! You are now an RYT.
All Other Schools Not Approved By The Ya Are Worse
It would be a mistake to presume that all schools, not approved by the YA, are worse than those which are. However, with YA approval you can be sure that the school has had their curriculum AND their teachers verified.
Although not perfect, The Yoga Alliance is attempting to bring some consistency to the experience of learning and teaching Yoga. They are also trying their best to eradicate or, at least, help you avoid inadequate Yoga training.
While some will complain that Yoga should not be standardized others will see the value in creating a structure. This is especially true for 200-hour foundational training where the specifications set by The Yoga Alliance mean all students should come out with a basic, but well-balanced, overview of Yoga.

Responsibility To Your Students
Many students are drawn to yoga, not because they are in prime physical and emotional condition, but because they are dealing with challenges. As yoga teachers, we have a great responsibility to our students.
Being an RYT 200-approved program doesn’t guarantee that the yoga teacher training is a high-quality program, but it’s certainly a step in the right direction. There are also probably teacher training programs that are not RYT 200-approved, but are still high-quality.
Students would need to carefully research these programs to make sure that their curriculum is solid. Making sure that the yoga teacher training program you choose is important to your future, but it’s also important to your future students who will be putting their trust in you as their teacher.
Yoga Teachers: Should You Join Yoga Alliance
- Posted on
- In Yoga Teaching
When you graduate from a 200-hour teacher training that has been approved by Yoga Alliance , you have the opportunity to join the Alliance and become a registered yoga teacher or RYT. Should you?
Well, until very recently, my answer to this would have been, No. Dont waste your money. Aside from getting to put the letters RYT after your name, there wasnt much benefit to paying your dues. However, Yoga Alliance has been trying to step up their game the last few years, and now it may be more of a toss up.
Yoga Alliance formed in 1997, when a group of yogis came together at the San Francisco Yoga Journal Conference. Seeing the growing popularity of yoga in the United States, they took on the responsibility of creating the yoga teacher training standards, which are now the benchmark for trainings over the world. Since 2013, Yoga Alliance has been focused on offering more tangible member benefits, such as discounts on products and services and online workshops.
Pros of Joining
Cons of Joining
- Cost: $115 to join up front, then $65/ year thereafter.
- People who hire yoga teachers generally dont care if you are a member .
- If you want to be faculty or a CEC provider, you dont have to join now. You can join later when you want to actually start offering course credits.

What Yoga Alliance Is Not
As far as we know, the Yoga Alliance does not send undercover agents, disguised as Yoga students, to check out the quality of training. Even if they did, they could never check them all. Or maybe they do, and they do an excellent job of going unnoticed
The Yoga Alliance works on an honor-based system. Therefore they cannot guarantee that the curriculum submitted by a school will be the exact curriculum that is taught. However, you have to wonder, would a school go to the lengths of creating a curriculum, submitting it, and not bothering to teach it?
Ultimately, The Registered Yoga School title is based on the number of hours spent teaching specified topics. It cannot guarantee the quality of exactly what is taught in class.
Disclaimer: In February 2022 the YA will implement their Elevated RYS Standards which involve moving toward a competency-based, rather than the current, strictly hours-based, system. Other changes will also be introduced.
