Prime Minister Narendra Modi suggested the idea of celebrating International Yoga Day on June 21 during his maiden speech at the United Nations on September 27, 2014. Indian diplomat Asoke Kumar Mukerji campaigned in the UN General Assembly to adopt June 21 as International Yoga Day. With triumphant support from 177 countries, the UN Assembly adopted the resolution in December 2014. The first International Yoga Day observed in 2015.

After the initial proposal by PM Narendra Modi, UNGA held consultations informally on the draft resolution namely, International Yoga Day, on October 14, 2014. The consultations were mustered by the delegation of India. In the year of 2015, the Reserve Bank of India issued a 10 rupees coin to mark the international day of yoga. After this initiative, in April 2017, the United Nations Postal Administration issued 10 stamps on the Asanas on a sheet to mark this day.

Live Active El Paso Invites The Community To Celebrate International Yoga Day El Paso And Fathers Day With A Free Yoga Event
Every year hundreds of people around the world celebrate International Yoga Day on June 21 but this year Live Active El Paso will celebrate the occasion the day before at the reserve section of Memorial Park at 8 a.m. Sunday, June 20.
Yoga aligns with the Live Active El Paso vision of living a healthy lifestyle through physical activity and mental health, said Cultural Affairs and Recreation Managing Director Ben Fyffe. With the help and support of Live Active El Paso partners, we have been able to organize this unique health event for the public and are excited to be part of the overall wellness of our community.
The free event, led by Shanti Yoga and Free the Yoga, is open to all ages, including women and men, and all body types. International Yoda Day El Paso will follow the following schedule:
- 8:30 a.m. Meditation
- 9:30 a.m. Vinyasa Flow Yoga
- 10:15 a.m. Sound Bath
Live Active El Paso will also provide a special meditation class by Empowerment Health and Wellness, as well as a sound bath workshop by Bright Compass. The special event will include health and wellness booths from Live Active El Paso partners.
People wanting to participate in the yoga session should bring their own yoga mat or something similar, wear comfortable clothing and shoes, and water to stay hydrated.

Starting on all fours, walk your hands a few inches in front of you. Tuck your toes and lift your hips up and back to lengthen your spine. Keep your knees bent in order to bring your weight back into the legs.

The draft was supported by 177 Member States who sponsored the text, which was adopted without a vote. International Yoga Day proposal gained support from many global leaders, 177 nations co-sponsored the resolution, which is the highest number of co-sponsors ever for any UNGA Resolution of such nature.
