International Yoga Day History

Prime Minister Narendra Modi suggested the idea of celebrating International Yoga Day on June 21 during his maiden speech at the United Nations on September 27, 2014. Indian diplomat Asoke Kumar Mukerji campaigned in the UN General Assembly to adopt June 21 as International Yoga Day. With triumphant support from 177 countries, the UN Assembly adopted the resolution in December 2014. The first International Yoga Day observed in 2015.

After the initial proposal by PM Narendra Modi, UNGA held consultations informally on the draft resolution namely, International Yoga Day, on October 14, 2014. The consultations were mustered by the delegation of India. In the year of 2015, the Reserve Bank of India issued a 10 rupees coin to mark the international day of yoga. After this initiative, in April 2017, the United Nations Postal Administration issued 10 stamps on the Asanas on a sheet to mark this day.

Every year hundreds of people around the world celebrate International Yoga Day on June 21 but this year Live Active El Paso will celebrate the occasion the day before at the reserve section of Memorial Park at 8 a.m. Sunday, June 20.

Yoga aligns with the Live Active El Paso vision of living a healthy lifestyle through physical activity and mental health, said Cultural Affairs and Recreation Managing Director Ben Fyffe. With the help and support of Live Active El Paso partners, we have been able to organize this unique health event for the public and are excited to be part of the overall wellness of our community.

The free event, led by Shanti Yoga and Free the Yoga, is open to all ages, including women and men, and all body types. International Yoda Day El Paso will follow the following schedule:

  • 8:30 a.m. Meditation
  • 9:30 a.m. Vinyasa Flow Yoga
  • 10:15 a.m. Sound Bath

Live Active El Paso will also provide a special meditation class by Empowerment Health and Wellness, as well as a sound bath workshop by Bright Compass. The special event will include health and wellness booths from Live Active El Paso partners.

People wanting to participate in the yoga session should bring their own yoga mat or something similar, wear comfortable clothing and shoes, and water to stay hydrated.

The word yoga comes from Sanskrit meaning to join or to unite.

Downward Facing Dog

Starting on all fours, walk your hands a few inches in front of you. Tuck your toes and lift your hips up and back to lengthen your spine. Keep your knees bent in order to bring your weight back into the legs.

Spread your fingers wide, press into your hands, and rotate your arms so that your biceps are facing toward one another. Press your thighs back toward the back of the room.

Chair Pose

Standing tall, your feet should be together.

International Yoga Day The Initiative

The idea of establishing a special day to celebrate the art of yoga was proposed by Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi. By way of this initiative, the Indian prime minister wanted to bring this unique gift given to us by our ancestors to limelight. He proposed this suggestion during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly in September 2014. During his UN address he also suggested that the day should be celebrated on the 21st of June since it is the longest day of the year.

The UNGA members mulled over the proposal given by Mr. Modi and soon gave a positive nod to it. 21st June 2015 was celebrated as the first International Yoga day. A grand event was organized on this day in India. The Indian Prime Minister, Mr. Modi and many other political leaders along with the general public gathered at Rajpath to celebrate the day with enthusiasm.

History On International Day Of Yoga

The International Day of Yoga was established in the year 2014. It had come to being after Narendra Modi had discussed the idea and the concept during addressing the UNGA. The address and the suggestion were made on October 14 in 2014. After this, an informal consultancy was carried out by Indian delegates. Narendra Modi also proposed later for June 21 to be commemorated as the International Day of Yoga.

This date was decided upon since it marks the longest spanning day in the northern hemisphere of the world. This date also marks the day of Guru Purnima as per the Indian Calendar the Guru Purnima is of immense significance when seen from the perspective of Yoga. Hence, this way, June 21 came to be celebrated as the International Day of Yoga fittingly.

2015 was the year when the International Day of Yoga was first initiated. The celebrations and events were held in New Delhi, Prime Minister Modi had led the development. People from as many as 84 nationalities had gathered together. Twenty-one different Yoga Asanas were performed over 35 minutes.

The first celebration of the International Day of Yoga is also marked as the most extensive and most comprehensive yoga class that was ever held. People from all across the world had traveled down to India to become a part of it. The number of participants has been more than thirty-five thousand since then, the International Day of Yoga is celebrated in India every year.

Why Is June 21 Celebrated As International Yoga Day

Initially on, December 11, 2014, Asoke Mukherji, India’s Permanent Representative introduced the draft resolution in the United Nations General Assembly. The draft was supported by 177 Member States who sponsored the text, which was adopted without a vote. International Yoga Day proposal gained support from many global leaders, 177 nations co-sponsored the resolution, which is the highest number of co-sponsors ever for any UNGA Resolution of such nature.

While presenting the proposal to the United Nations General Assembly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed and discussed the essence of Yoga.
