How You Can Make Your Muscles Stop Shaking

Why does our body shake during meditation? How do we solve it?

For the time being, to calm things down, try to hug the quivering muscle against its underlying bone and press the bone into the muscle being stretched.

Quivering is not necessarily bad, but it may be a sign youre overworking. Several years ago, when slugger Mark McGwire was mired in a terrible slump, a sportscaster asked Macs hitting coach what the problem was. The coach opined that McGwire was trying too hard, and needed to try easier.

Tune into your brain, your eyes, the root of your tongue, and, most of all, your breath: If any of these areas feel hard or constricted, take the coachs advice: Try easier.

What To Drink Before You Practice

DO drink at least 8 ounces of water 30 minutes before class. If you are attending an evening class, try to drink half your body weight in water throughout the day prior to your class. For example, if you weigh 120 lbs, drink 60 ounces of water during the day. Make sure 8 ounces of that is within 30 minutes of your class. If morning yoga is your thing, try to drink 8-16 ounces before class. If its hard for you to drink that much water, try tea or adding fruit to your water to give it more flavor. I keep boxes of Yogi tea at my desk and drink that throughout the day.


DONT drink a lot of caffeine prior to class

If youve had a cup or two of coffee throughout the day, you will have some boosted energy that can assist in a successful yoga practice. However, coffee is dehydrating, and if hot yoga is your preference, you need to focus on hydrating your body.;

Occasionally when taking a yoga class and Im holding a pose, my muscles start to shake. Why is this and is this good or bad?

Dear Shakin’,

It sounds as though you are discovering a deeper layer within yourself. This shaking, due to longer holds, is twofold and can render amazing results both physically and psychologically.


First Lets talk about shaking from a physical perspective. Muscular shakes can begin when more dominant muscles begin to fatigue. These may include: masseter, deltoids, triceps, biceps, psoas, rectus femoris , gluteus medius, and gastrocnemius. These are primary movers and though they are strong, possibly stronger than many other muscles, they have their strength limitations. These limitations are typically felt when the muscles are both contracting and in a prolonged extended position.

This is a wonderful attribute when balanced evenly between both sides of the body, which is the focus of both weight lifting and yoga. Strength limitations can ensue from unilateral repetition, as the muscle becomes stronger on one side than the other.

Test your strength and test weakness between the two sides:

Extend out laterally both arms shoulder height and palms facing down. Hold the arms in this position until you feel them begin to shake . Bring your arms down.

How To Avoid Muscle Shaking After A Workout

Its also possible to prevent post-exercise tremors before they happen. Heres how:

  • Challenge yourself gradually. Increase the duration or intensity of your workout in small increments. This may help prevent shaking and injury.
  • Eat a pre-workout meal. Give your body enough fuel before you start exercising. Consume a pre-workout meal 2 to 3 hours before your workout.
  • Limit or avoid caffeine. If youre sensitive to caffeine, reduce or avoid it before exercise.
  • Warm up and cool down. Before exercise, warm up to prepare your muscles for movement. Cool down when youre done to promote recovery and reduce soreness and fatigue.
  • Prepare a post-workout meal in advance. If you have a meal prepared ahead of time, you can quickly and easily refuel your muscles once youre done working out.
  • Hydrate before, during, and after exercise. Drinking fluids throughout the day can help reduce your risk of dehydration. Increase your fluid intake if you exercise outdoors in hot weather, or if you do a strenuous workout.

In most cases, post-workout shaking isnt serious. But if you notice any of the following symptoms, get medical help:

Can I Do Yoga 2 Hours After Eating

ANSWER: Two hours after you eat is generally when you have an empty stomach and it’s okay to practice yoga. If you are starving and want to practice yoga but need some nourishment it’s fine to eat a banana or have a little juice to sustain you through the practice. Just no bean burritos before hitting the mat.

Why Your Muscles Shake While Working Out

Now that you have a basic grasp on how your muscles twitch, let’s dig into shaky muscle syndrome.

During a workout, your body recruits motor units in a systematic way. It first triggers slow-twitch motor units. As the exercise intensifies, moderate fast-twitch motor units begin to fire. Amp things up even more, and fast-twitch motor units jump aboard.


When you’re hitting it hard, you’ll eventually reach a point where your muscle fibers begin to flag in their subs.

“Your body adapts by replacing the fatigued fibers with fresh fibers,” says Glenn Gaesser, PhD, professor of exercise physiology in the College of Health Solutions at Arizona State University.

Muscle fibers tucker out at different times, so while some fibers are at work, others are dropping out and new ones are jumping in.

Generally, your muscle fibers have the coordination down pat, which is why your motions in and out of the gym appear smooth.

But in some cases, that transition isn’t so seamless. And as one fiber peaces out, it takes a split second for the other to step in, Gaesser explains. As a result, you feel your muscles shaking during the workout.

    Why Your Muscles Shake During A Hard Workout

    Humans are walking emotions, every second of the day we are riding the wave of our emotions. Yoga makes that wave crash onto the mat and we are faced with ourselves and everything that we have been avoiding.

    A release of those bottled up emotions quickly turns into a release of toxins which then goes into your bloodstream.

    When that occurs yogis may feel nauseated, dizzy and even sleepy after yoga practice because of the release of emotions and toxins.

    Our bodies are always wanting to protect us and when things seem as though they are out of our control, our bodies react in different ways. Protection mode comes in the form of headaches, dizziness, and sleepiness.

    Experiencing a release of emotions and toxins is extremely therapeutic for yogis because once our bodies are done with certain things, they need to be released because they are no longer serving us.

    That release is absolutely necessary but on the other end of that is that when our bodies release emotions and toxins we ultimately go through withdrawal because having those inside is what we were used to.

    Withdrawal can occur when we release anything out of our body, whether it is good or bad.

    If you come to a yoga practice feeling not the best; sad, upset, angry, etc., you will feel those emotions trying to be released in your practice and that is okay.

    Allow the release of those emotions to occur and leave it all on the mat along with the judgment that you may have for yourself.

    How To Stop Muscle Shakes

    Now that you know where the muscle shakes come from, you know how to prevent them from happening. In many cases, theyre a normal, healthy response to a good workout, a sign that your body is growing stronger. However, its important to listen to your body and make sure not to push it too hard. If a muscle starts shaking very early on in a session, thats a sign that you may want to take a rest day instead.

    Get enough sleep, stay hydrated, and dont overwork your body.

    However, you can often expect a little quivering at the end of a great workout, and what is a yogi to do when youre in the middle of a pose and one of your hamstrings goes rogue? Is it safe to hold the pose and try to remain focused? How much shaking is too much?

    Heres our advice: focus on your breathing with smooth inhales and exhales, and take account of your eyes and the root of your tongue. If you have to restrict or hold your breath, or you are holding tension in your face or tongue, your body has likely had enough and its time to move out of the position.

    Additionally, pay extra close attention to your alignment when one of your muscles starts to quiver. Slipping into poor form can increase your risk of injury, so if you cant hold the correct pose, release it. Chug a glass of water after yoga class, and make sure to get to bed early that night. Your body will be refreshed and ready for a brand new day of yoga tomorrow muscle shakes or not!
