Revolved High Crescent Lunge
From Downward Facing Dog, step your right foot between your hands and keep your back knee lifted. Stack your front knee over your front ankle and engage the muscles in your back leg. Engage your core to lift your torso, stacking your shoulders over your hips and lifting your arms towards the sky. From here, open your arms out to either side like a capital T. Keep your core engaged as you twist your body towards your front knee. Be mindful to keep the muscles in your legs and core engaged to protect your spine here. Hold for 5-7 breaths on each side.
Are Twisting Yoga Postures Dangerous
Although there has previously been a link suggested between habitual twisting or trunk rotation and chronic lower back pain, a literature review of the topic reveals that twisting is not a statistically significant factor in lower back pain. It is likely that the previous studies that suggested a causal link were actually seeing the association between bending and/or bending combined with twisting rather than twisting alone.
It is interesting that those suffering from lower back pain have reduced recruitment of their internal oblique muscles during trunk rotation. So it may be that in one way to reduce lower back pain is to strengthen the internal oblique muscle through regular, controlled twisting with the torso upright. Yoga provides a number of different options for twists, ranging from gentle to more vigorous, depending on your own bodys needs.
Benefits Breathing And Lowers Blood Pressure
If you practise yoga consistently, your lung capacity will increase as a result of the deep breathing process. This will then have a positive effect on more intense sports that you might be a part of, increasing your stamina and endurance. Furthermore, meditation and calming yoga asanas slow down your heart rate which in turn lowers blood pressure and have also been linked with improving the immune system and lowering cholesterol.

Modifications For Yoga Twists
Most of us have probably heard about the benefits of twists improved digestion, detoxing the organs by gently massaging and squeezing them, stimulating bloodflow, as well as allowing the spine to experience a full range of motion. However, if your body is shaped less like a celery stalk and more like a butternut squash, twists may feel totally uncomfortable.
Ill just come out and say it. I have a belly. I have thighs. In a twist, they meet each other rather quickly. Right away, I become very aware of my body shape as things squish into other things, my breathing feels constricted , and everything feels cramped up.
On a good day, I modify the pose, and I still get all the benefits of the twist. On a bad day, I look at the celery stalk next to me, looking blissful in some crazy twist plus bind, and think about how much it sucks to be a fat ass butternut squash.

Increases Your Blood Flow
Yoga gets your blood flowing. More specifically, the relaxation exercises you learn in yoga can help your circulation, especially in your hands and feet. Yoga also gets more oxygen to your cells, which function better as a result. Twisting poses are thought to wring out venous blood from internal organs and allow oxygenated blood to flow in once the twist is released. Inverted poses, such as Headstand, Adho Mukha Vrksasana , and Shoulderstand, encourage venous blood from the legs and pelvis to flow back to the heart, where it can be pumped to the lungs to be freshly oxygenated. This can help if you have swelling in your legs from heart or kidney problems. Yoga also boosts levels of hemoglobin and red blood cells, which carry oxygen to the tissues. And it thins the blood by making platelets less sticky and by cutting the level of clot-promoting proteins in the blood. This can lead to a decrease in heart attacks and strokes since blood clots are often the cause of these killers.
Benefits Of The Twists
A look at the benefits of, and common pitfalls in the yoga twists

Many traditional hatha yoga practices come from a belief that the abdominal organs are the key to good health. Twists more than any other group of postures apply the squeeze and soak method This squeezing and soaking also occurs to some extent in the intervertebral discs, which require this sort of movement to remain elastic, full of fluid and thus good at their job of providing space, cushioning and freedom of movement between the vertebrae of the spine. Twisting also mobilises intestinal blockages and promotes good digestion generally if we twist first to the right, and then to the left, the intestinal tract is squeezed in such a way as to move its contents along in the correct direction to promote healthy elimination. One of the other great benefits of a pure twist is a release of tension in tissues along the mid-line of the body.

Benefits Of Seated Twists
According to experienced practitioners, yoga can reverse signs of physical aging. Still, it’s easy to be intimidated by the pretzel-like poses seen on the covers of yoga publications. While you may never achieve poses that resemble those of circus acrobats, easier postures can improve your overall well-being. For beginners, a simple seated twist known as Ardha Matsyendrasana in Sanskrit provides a comfortable way to benefit from the practice.

How Does Twisting In Yoga Help With Detoxification
How does twisting in yoga help with detoxification?
Twisting poses are very much an integral part of the pantheon of yogaasanas. Yogis are constantly twisting into intricate poses, holding them as they breathe deeply, and counter-twisting many of them.
But why all the twisting? Because twisting postures have amazing effects on the physical body and even on the mental and emotional ones.
First of all, theyre highly detoxifying in nature. B.K.S. Iyengar refers to it as the squeeze and soak action. When we twist, the organs of detoxification in the abdominal region get a good massage. The organs in the digestive system temporarily get their blood supply cut off when we twist into the pose, and then receive a fresh source of blood when we come out of the twist. The cells detoxify and waste moves out of the system.
Twisting poses also help us detox because they aid in healthy digestion. We compress the digestive organs when were deep into a twist, which in turn cuts off the circulation. Then, in the release of the twist, new blood flows into the digestive organs, filling them with fresh nutrients and fresh oxygen. All this supports the healthy functioning of digestive organs.
Twists give us a mental and emotional detox because they release stress and anxiety. Stored bodily tension is let go of and the mind begins to quiet. Practicing a 16-count breath can help de-stress the body even further as we settle into the twisting postures.
Builds Awareness For Transformation
Yoga and meditation build awareness. And the more aware you are, the easier it is to break free of destructive emotions like anger. Studies suggest that chronic anger and hostility are as strongly linked to heart attacks as are smoking, diabetes, and elevated cholesterol. Yoga appears to reduce anger by increasing feelings of compassion and interconnection and by calming the nervous system and the mind. It also increases your ability to step back from the drama of your own life, to remain steady in the face of bad news or unsettling events. You can still react quickly when you need toand theres evidence that yoga speeds reaction timebut you can take that split second to choose a more thoughtful approach, reducing suffering for yourself and others.

Low Lunge With Sidebend
From Tadasana, bow down into Ardha Uttanasana and step the left leg back, placing the knee down onto the yoga mat. If available, use a yoga block for this next pose as this will make it easier accessible. Otherwise, you can simply come onto your fingertips.
Put the yoga block on the outside of your right hip and place the right hand onto the block. The left hand rests on top of the front knee. Gather strength in the legs by pulling the back knee forward and the front foot back until you feel the pelvis slightly lifting.
From that strength in the legs, draw the abdomen in and up as if you were trying to climb the ribcage up. Let the left ribs poke up to the sky and take the left arm up and over the ear to sidebend over to the right side. This pose is a combination of Reverse Warrior and Low Lunge.
Release the pose after a few breaths and step forward into Uttanasana and then step the opposite foot back, repeating the same pose on the other side.
Combine Reverse Warrior and Low Lunge.

Come on, baby! Lets do the twist! Take me by my little hand and go like this
What is a twist? That sounds like a simple enough question. We do it all the time. Twist to the left, twist to the right, twist again like we did last summer!
Moving The Pelvis And The Sacrum Apart
In seated twists, where one leg is extended straight out along the floor, and the other knee is bent in some way many of us are used to practicing with both sitting bones firmly planted on the floor, and the pelvis absolutely level. If you think about it, if we twist in this way, the twist begins at the waist. As we have learned, not much rotation happens in the lumbar spine, so the rotation will have to happen across the back of the hipsin other words, at the sacro iliac joint . Twisting in this way means that the sacrum and the ilia are pulled in opposite directions. This creates torque through the joint itself, stretching the ligaments involved, and eventually de-stabilizing the joint
NB Opinion is divided on this point of practice, as in many others, and many teachers will instruct you to perform twists with the hips planted, and the actual movement of the twist beginning at the waist. What I write here is what I believe to be the most beneficial way of practicing for most people, based on my own experience, and that of my teachers.

Demystifying Detox: Can Yoga Really Cleanse The Liver
If theres one word that seems ubiquitous every January, its “detox”. Anyone hoping to wash away the excesses of the holiday season will look for ways to be better and healthier, at least than they were the year before. The fact is, detoxing isnt a thing. It is well dressed pseudoscience. It is hard to pinpoint a single culprit responsible for this piece of bad physiology that persists. Who knows where the origins of this misnomer lay, but recently its been seen more and more in the ever-growing yoga industry.
Madonnas triceps and Stings bedroom habits aside, yoga has been steadily increasing in popularity since the 1990s. A 2008 study in Yoga Journal reported the worth of the yoga industry to be $5.7bn, and today there are approximately 4,500 yoga-based businesses in the UK alone.
One benefit of yogas visibility and popularity is the variety of styles and methods available for one to get a stretch on. Classes offered nowadays can range from more traditional yoga styles that honour its cultural or spiritual origins, to ones that cater to a more fitness-orientated crowd. Its possible to find “hot” yoga, where the studio is warmed to 40C, theres even yoga for “dudes”. For the ultra-warrior, there is a fusion of Boxing Yoga, and the latest addition to the myriad of ways to stretch is disco-yoga! Regardless of whether youre seeking the reverent or the physical, one thing still abounds in many yoga studios: bad science.
The best detox advice I know is:
Yoga Position To Ease Painful Bloating & Gas
Forget what youve heard about getting into pretzel-type contortions to enjoy the benefits of yoga. While some master yogis can move their limbs as if their bones were missing, dont compare yourself to them. Yoga practice offers simple twists the average person can do to experience health benefits. Some poses come with contraindications. Get the OK from your doctor before starting a yoga class and share any health issues with your yoga teacher.
