Common Questions & Answers
The heightened stress and fast pace of todays world make yoga more relevant than ever, says Sally Sherwin, a yoga instructor at the Center for Integrative & Lifestyle Medicine at Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, who is certified by Yoga Alliance, the world’s largest nonprofit yoga association that certifies teachers and schools.
We spend so much time on autopilot, checking off things on our to-do list. Yoga can help people slow down, she says. Yoga can help people manage stress and improve well-being, says Sherwin.
When you do yoga, your nervous system calms down and you get out of that fight-or-flight state, Sherwin says. Just sitting and breathing can be yoga. Youre aware, youre in the moment, and you can find peace in that moment, she says.
There Are Many Styles Of Yoga
If youre scrolling through what seems like an endless list of classes, all with titles that mean nothing to you , Howe has a few tips to ease your selection stress. Think of the reasons you want to start your practice, she says. If youve never tried yoga before, maybe avoid the Power/Ashtanga type classes and Bikram . Get to know how your body feels in a regular temperature class, she suggests. When in doubt, Try many different styles, many different instructors, Howe says. Youll know what works best for you. Theres something for everyone or a style or flavor for every day of the week. After all, theres even face yoga.
When You Do Yoga Every Day You Can Improve Your Posture
You might not be aware of it, but having good posture is super important for your health, according to chiropractor Andrew Bang. “Having poor posture may lead to aches and pains, but having it over the long term is when you get real damage,” he revealed in an interview with the Cleveland Clinic. And that damage can lead to pain and inflammation, possibly eventually causing arthritis in your joints.
One way you can ensure that you have good posture, in addition to making sure you have a safe work setup and mind your neck while looking at your phone, is to start to do yoga every day, says certified personal trainer Monica Straith. “Your posture will improve from the combination of muscle strengthening and stretching,” she shared with The List. “Weak and tight muscles can lead to poor posture, and poor posture can make muscles even weaker and tighter.” She added that, in order to ensure that you reap the benefits of yoga, it’s important to have a consistent regimen.

Turn your at-home yoga practice into a daily ritual.

That 90-minute power flow class at your favorite hot yoga studio might be an amazing weekly workout. But practicing yoga at home allows you to reap the long-term benefits of a regular practiceand that doesnt mean you must devote a full hour-and-a-half to your mat every single day.
It is more beneficial to do a little something daily, or regularly, than a 60-to-90-minute power yoga class every once in a while. So if you want to turn your yoga practice into more of a daily habit, remember that a little can go a long way, said Mishler.
Carve out some time each day for yogaand dont expect it to be the same every single day. A 45-minute vinyasa yoga class on a Monday morning might be just the thing to make you feel invigorated at the start of a week, while you might only have time for 10 minutes of sun salutations on another day. By Sunday, your body might be craving a long, juicy restorative session. Tune in to what your body needs, then give yourself the time and space to practice.
Show up for a little something every day and watch how your desire to explore your body on the mat can shift and change. Ive seen many people go from hating yoga to loving it through this commitment of a little something each day versus a full length session, said Mishler. Remember that with at-home yoga, you can make it your own, and you can change it up based on how you feel each day.
Want To Improve Your Focus Do Yoga Every Day

It’s no secret that it can be tough to focus when you’re juggling work, family life, and school obligations. Whether you’re working from home or trying to decompress after putting in hours at your job, maintaining your attention span can sometimes seem like a herculean task.
If you find yourself struggling to read your book or unable to complete tasks without frequent breaks, starting a yoga practice might help you get re-centered. “Certain forms of yoga asana practice requires physical self-development and devotion,” says Nadia Agarwal, a certified yoga teacher. “Continuous dedication to your yoga asana practice can lead to a high level of focus and dedication in other areas of your life as you train your mind to reach your goals.”
In addition to improving your focus, following through on your decision to do yoga every day can also help you be more mindful, according to Harvard Medical School. That, in turn, can help you appreciate what you’re experiencing in every moment.

If Your Practice Sticks And You Want To Continue Plan To Treat Yourself To Some Accessories Or Apparel
Although you can make yoga props out of literally anything, the longer you practice, the more youre gonna want to invest in quality products. Ive accumulated my props over time, and I always look for gear thats more ecologically sound and geared toward diverse bodies. My favorite yoga block is Mandukas Unblok recycled-foam yoga block , and I love Yoga Hustles straps .
Its kind of an annoying reality, but I do think good yoga mats are generally expensive and bad yoga mats are generally cheap. And if youre fat and/or tall, you might eventually crave a mat thats built to accommodate your size. Personally, I use the Jade Yoga XW Fusion mat , and I cant recommend it highly enough its expensive as fuck but worth every penny.

I Want To Lose Weight How Often Should I Practice
Create a calorie deficit to lose weight. That means you have to eat fewer calories than your body burns.
Healthy nutrition is critical if your goal is to shed those nasty pounds. You can do intensive yoga for two hours every day but still gain weight in case your diet isnt in check.
Yoga is not as efficient for weight loss as cardio exercises like running, dancing, aerobics, etc. because it burns fewer calories compared to high-intensity training.
That said, it can still be a part of a successful weight management program. Practice fast and vigorous yoga styles such as Power Yoga, Vinyasa, Ashtanga that will keep you moving throughout the class.
The most optimal number would be between three to six yoga sessions a week , depending on how much weight you want to lose and how fast. Beware of the burnout and give your body at least one rest day per week to restore and regenerate.
Meditating, chanting, and stretching can relieve stress and improve your sleep, but they wont help you build any muscles. Choose dynamic and vigorous yoga styles if your primary goal is increasing strength.

Your Immune System May Improve If You Do Yoga Every Day

Are you someone who’s prone to catching whatever is going around, no matter the time of year? And can you make a solid bet that when flu season arrives, you’re going to wind up sick no matter the food and drinks you consume to help bolster your immune system? If so, consider adding a regular yoga practice to your immune-boosting regimen, as noted by certified yoga teacher and nutritionist Katie Boyd. “With all of the bending, twisting, stretching and inverting, yoga movements work deep into the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps you rest and digest, and works less in the sympathetic nervous system, which is your flight or flight response mechanism,” she explained to The List. “This mechanism is what causes stress response and inflammation which dramatically lowers the immune system.”
That’s not all, as reducing your inflammation can help protect you from chronic illnesses like diabetes and hyperlipidemia, according to an article in the Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research. So if you suspect you may be at risk for inflammatory diseases, consider choosing to do yoga every day.

How To Practice Yoga
Yoga is typically performed in bare feet on a sticky yoga mat with optional yoga props. The yoga movements and poses require clothes that can stretch and move freely with your body. You can purchase clothing specifically designed for yoga practice, but you can probably put together a comfortable outfit from your existing wardrobe to get started.
Yoga classes may use additional props, the most common being straps, blocks, blankets, and bolsters. You dont need to purchase these right away as you can easily substitute these items with scarves or neckties, a stack of books, and pillows. If you take classes at a yoga studio, they will provide everything that you need.
How Stress Can Ruin Your Life
Stress has been shown to affect the body from head to toe. In addition to muscle tightness, it can be at the root of chronic pain, breathing issues, cardiovascular problems, stomach trouble, anxiety and more.
According to the American Psychological Association, one of the best things that you can do to manage stress is to exercise regularly. If youre not very active or have mobility limitations, yoga is very adaptable. A common misconception is that you have to be super flexible to do it. You dont. You also dont need fancy equipment, a membership to an exclusive studio or clothing with premium price tags. What you will need is a lot of patience, the ability to laugh at yourself from time to time and a willingness to block out your ego.

What Is The Best Yoga Certification To Get
Yoga Alliance is the most well-known private organization that provides yoga instructor certification, but a YA certification doesnt mean that you received quality training or that you are ready to teach yoga. Of course, it is nice to be able to join the trend of having a YA certification to ensure that you dont miss any opportunities that are tied to this kind of certification, but outside of your local yoga studio, not many others will be asking for a YA certification.

Get Comfortable In Stillness
Most of us find it very challenging to sit still.
We would rather run around, keep busy, and check items off our to-do list than just be.
Even when we are chilling out, our hands drum on our knees, our thoughts wander to the past or future, or our eyes hungrily scan an iPhone or T.V. screen.
So before you try to bang out the most advanced yoga poses you can find on the pages of Yoga Journal or Instagram, try the most basic tenets of yoga of all, being present.
The next time you’re waiting in line, riding public transportation, or perching on the toilet, notice the temptation to whip your phone out for distraction.
Try to observe the urge rather than immediately give into it.
