Understand The Yoga Alliance

Number two, certification in the yoga world is something thats very much in flux. Yogas not really regulated by the state or at the national level.

So you can pay Yoga Alliance for permission to use their RYT trademark after your name, but it doesnt actually, really mean anything at the government, state, or national level.

So it may or may not be worth doing, based on your personal goals.

If you wanna deep-dive with me into what certification really means, I absolutely suggest you listen to this podcast, where I go into a lot more detail.

So what is an RYT certification for, then?

Its mostly for yoga and fitness studios in the US to assure that the yoga instructors they hire have completed a minimum level of education as a yoga instructor. It doesnt, however, ensure that you actually practice yoga, that you have any teaching skills, or that your training program was of high quality.

While it is certainly helpful when applying for a teaching job at a yoga studio, its not necessary for other more lucrative teaching gigs .

If youre clear about your goals for your training program, then youll be more clear about whether or not an RYT certification is necessary.

What Is A Yoga Teacher Training

A yoga teacher training is a certified teacher training program that offers a complete and detailed understanding of yoga. It covers all the major aspects of yoga, including, meditation, philosophy, history, physiology, and anatomy. And it equips you with the skills and methods necessary for teaching yoga to others.

A 200-hour teacher training course is the golden standard. You can follow that up with other advanced or specialized teacher training programs.

Depending on your budget, schedule and home situation, you can choose to complete your 200-hour YTT in a short and immersive course of four weeks, at your local studio or online.

You Want To Find Your Voice

You may have already found it.; For me, personally, exploring the yogic concept of satya truly helped me in finding authenticity when I speak, both in my personal life and in my classes.; Learning that the things you say, in life and while leading a class, arent going to be universally accepted. You cant please everyone with your words, and so you find ways to accept that.; The people with whom your words resonate are your people. You arent going to connect with everyone.

Should You Do A Yoga Teacher Training?

There are many types of yoga teacher training. If youre researching a Yoga Alliance accredited school , your training requirements will be broken down into the following categories: Techniques, Training and Practice, Teaching Methodology, Anatomy & Physiology, Yoga Philosophy, Lifestyle and Ethics, Practicum, Remaining Contact and Elective Hours.

The school you choose may provide more emphasis within those categories to specific elements of yoga and yoga related topics. If you want to be certain youll just be learning one specific style of yoga , be sure to select a training focused on that style. Or at ask the teacher training leads if that style will be covered.;

For reference, the more corporate trainings usually focus on getting you ready to teach as quickly as possible.;This means youll spend more time learning how to teach and less time on other topics such as: pranayama, philosophy, anatomy, etc. For many people this is the right approach. Bonus points for this style of YTT is youll have a good;chance at getting hired by them once you graduate.

On the other hand, some trainings have a heavier focus on philosophy , and less on teaching. Are you looking to get a teaching job right away or simply want to understand more about philosophy? Knowing this will help guide your decision making process.

Decide How You Want To Apply Your Knowledge

This is a good follow up question to ask after setting your intention. There are so many different career paths that a yogi can take and being a yoga teacher is only one of them.

If teaching at a specific yoga studio is what calls to you, I highly recommend doing your training there. Some studios have a unique teaching style and require their teachers to do the in-house training.

This makes your decision quite easy.

Teaching in a yoga studio will most likely require you to have your Yoga Alliance certification. In order to be a registered yoga teacher , you have to do your training through a YA registered yoga school. Make sure that your program is certified if thats what youre looking for.

But to be honest, the Yoga Alliance doesnt do much other than take your money and give you a fancy instructor certification. It doesnt ensure that your chosen training program is good quality or that you are ready to teach yoga upon completion.

If youre interested in making money as a yoga instructor, there are lots of ways to do it without having to get a YA yoga instructor certification.

And, of course, you dont ever have to teach yoga either.

Maybe you just want to dive deeper into the Yoga Sutras, learn how to incorporate pranayama, meditation, and the many styles of yoga into your own daily life. Maybe you just want to learn about anatomy and physiology to improve your own asana practice.

Maybe you just want to get to know other people who are passionate about yoga.

All About The Benjamins

Erin had some really specific questions about the money side of things:

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer my questions. I had wanted to get my 200-hour TTC, but its expensive around here and I had put it on the back burner to focus on other priorities. However, I have an opportunity to start next spring, but I want to make sure its financially sound. I know a lot of yoga folks dont like talking about money, because were supposed to be called to something higher, etc. But if Im going to the trouble, I want to make sure its worth it.

Here are her questions:

Do you feel like YTT was a sound financial investment?;

I absolutely feel like it was. It wasnt a trivial amount of money at all but the education and amount of one-on-one time Ive received for the money was excellent in my opinion. Hats off to Anna Pittman at The Breathing Space. She has programs in Virginia Beach, Blacksburg, Va., and Beckley, West Virginia.

How easy is it to pick up classes to teach?

Well, it was pretty easy for me, but I was pretty lucky, I think. My good friend Lisa owns The Space Above Yoga Center, where I practice. She;had wanted to offer a class geared toward larger-bodied yogis for some time. A spot opened up this month, and so now I have a weekly class. I really didnt have to do anything, haha.

How are you compensated for teaching ?;

Understand The Inner Self

Yoga teacher training is a great way to know the real you. It is about being completely silent and feel the purity of your soul. In the busy and noisy environment of today, nobody has time for his/her life. In a Yoga TTC event, you have the hegemony over each and every moment of yours. There is no one to dominate you. You are the owner of your own body and mind, enabling you to understand yourself better.

You Want To Adopt Healthy Posture

This one goes hand in hand with learning healthy alignment, but taking it to the next level. In a YTT, youre taught what and how to observe students while they practice you learn to observe physical habits. Naturally as you are training your awareness to naturally include this physical assessment, you will apply it to yourself.

Youll notice physical tendencies that you have, whether its a natural sway-back position with the hips forward and shoulders back, or maybe something kinda different, like you tend to drive with one foot out of the window .

If you wind up noticing something that facilitates asymmetry in your body or maybe something unhealthy for your spine, you adjust accordingly. This improves your posture on a daily basis, yes, but also protects your body as you get older.

The Reason Behind Why I Did Yoga Teacher Training

What It’s Like To Do A Yoga Teacher Training

When I first got the idea to become a yoga teacher I wanted to do the training because I thought it was cool . Being a yoga teacher was trendy and I loved the idea of being super flexible and bending into awkward poses. Really I just wanted to be a yoga teacher so I could show off.

That was completely the wrong reason to want to go into yoga training but overtime my reasoning for wanting to give it a go changed. As I became more spiritual I realized that the philosophy of yoga had deep roots and that it was the philosophy and reasoning behind why people practice that actually interested me more than the health benefits of yoga .

My interest in yoga philosophy then developed into wanting to expand my practice, to deepen my knowledge of yoga as a whole. This is when I decided to start actually looking for a yoga instructor course.

I never wanted to do a YTT course in order to become a yoga teacher, though I did love the idea of having that skill in my back pocket. Instead, I used YTT as a way to not only deepen my practice but to prove to myself that I could be really good at something physical despite my weight, as Im overweight, and to prove to others that being a yoga teacher doesnt mean you have to be extremely fit or tiny or really bendy to do so.

This new found reason for wanting to do YTT suddenly wasnt just about me but about sharing the knowledge Id learn with others, even if I wasnt going to be a yoga teacher.

You Want To Be Transformed

All of the aforementioned reasons to take a yoga teacher training contribute to the self-transformation that ultimately occurs. By introducing new or unfamiliar concepts into our range of knowledge, were forced to reevaluate thought and behavior patterns that might not align with the person we truly are or wish to be.; Its not someone else trying to change us, or us trying to change for someone.

Its a transformation that comes from the deepest core of our being, because it comes from within, without all of those other external factors. Its a transformation that aligns us more closely with the person we truly are.

Location Of Yoga Teacher Training Course

If you are strictly looking for YTT programs that are within your budget, then maybe you should let the location determine your selection.

There are certain destinations that are notoriously overpriced, such as Costa Rica and Bali.

There are other places that hardly cost a dime, like India.

The majority of cheap yoga trainings will without a doubt be in India, where you can learn from certified yoga instructors right in the heart of it all. Develop your personal practice with the guidance of an original RYT and become a registered yoga teacher from the birthplace of yoga.

Oftentimes, for less than $1,000.

Costa Rica, on the other hand, is one of the pricier destinations of all. While you can definitely find some affordable YTT programs in Costa Rica, you will have to first sift through the ultra-luxury, ultra westernized packages.

Ill cover budget-friendly destinations a little later on in this blog post.

Key Steps To Becoming A Yoga Teacher

1. Do your research

Essentially, make sure this is the right path for you. Ask to speak to yoga teachers you know or have taken classes from. Get a strong idea of what the job will entail. Ask yourself some critical questions:

Do you have any prospective places where you could teach once youre certified?

Do you plan on quitting your current job in order to be a full-time yoga teacher?;

In terms of your training, how will you juggle the courses, work, family, and other responsibilities as you go to school?

These are all worthwhile questions to consider.

2. Choose a teacher training program

Continue your research by investigating different teacher training programs in your area. If you plan to become certified yoga instructor by the Yoga Alliance, remember that you need to choose a training program that is also certified as a Registered Yoga School . You’ll also need to decide between the 200-hour and the 500-hour program, to get your RYT 200 or RYT 500 certification;

3. Attend classes, study, and ace your training

Once you’ve chosen a teacher training program, enrolled, and paid your tuition, it’s time to start learning! Do your best to absorb all you can during your training so that you can bring it to your practice when you begin teaching others.

4. Obtain yoga instructor insurance

5. Get some practice teaching yoga

6. Find work as a yoga instructor

7. Keep learning
