Mahabharata, written by Sage Vyasa, is one of the longest known epic poems composed of over 200,000 individual verse lines. There is still historical debate and speculation as to yogas first official manifestation. According to lore, it was Agastya, one of the travelling sages, who was responsible for making the yogic system achieve its fullest potential in India by cultivating it as a way of life. Yet it was Maharshi Patanjali who figured out how to systemize and codify the existing meaning, practices, and related knowledge of yoga through the Yoga Sutras, after which many erudites, including Mahavir and Buddha, were able to contribute to the development and preservation of yoga through their detailed logs and records of their literature and practices, such as the Five Great Vows and the Eightfold Path .

Karma Yoga is the yoga of unselfish action. It is often thought to involve charity and community involvement, and indeed it may. However, the main process of Karma Yoga is an internal one where a practitioner learns to do their work in the world, whatever that may be, without being attached to the fruits of the action. A sincere practitioner of Karma Yoga dedicates all their action to a higher purpose serving God.

In the Bhagavad Gita there isnt one yoga that is preferred above the others, nor are they mutually exclusive. Your dharma will determine which type of yoga is most appropriate for you.

    The Modern Yoga Renaissance

    Tirumalai Krishnamacharya of Mysore, often called the father of modern yoga, devoted much of his life and career to pushing the boundaries of yoga and promoting it to a broader audience. He was a great showman with superhuman abilities, able to lift heavy objects with his teeth and suspend his heart rate on a whim.

    He quickly caught the attention of the Palace of Mysore, who regularly sponsored trips for Krishnamacharya to promote yoga all across India. They eventually asked Krishnamacharya to open his own yoga school in a wing of the Royal Palace. There, he refined his own yoga techniques and inspired others to do the same.
