What To Wear To Vinyasa Yoga

Your Clothes Should Be Comfortable And Allow For Ease Of Movement

Donna Brown, Author and Certified Yoga Teacher

I teach two beginning yoga classes a week, one a regular mat class, and the other a chair class for those less mobile. They average between three to eight students per class, which allows us the luxury of socializing from a distance.

My students wear clothes designed for comfort rather than fashion, .

Regardless of what you wear, I feel that clothes should be comfortable and allow for ease of movement.

Over the 20-plus years I’ve taught yoga, I’ve seen all types of attire, from yoga pants to stylish leotards that were so tight, I wondered how the students could even move!

I’ve also attended a hot yoga class where the instructor yelled out the poses over her headphone mic, and I don’t know if the horrible headache I had was due to severe dehydration, or from an ungodly decibel level of the teacher’s voice!

Perhaps beginner students should do some research on hot yoga classes and the inherent dangers of participation especially with those with cardiac and high blood pressure problems.

For first time students, I highly recommend bringing their own mat, one to two yoga blocks, a strap, and a towel or blanket to use as a cover or bolster to place under their head and/or knees to enhance deep relaxation at the end of class.

I suggest a student bring two blocks for use especially during the lunges that are part of Sun Salutations, to aid with balance and stability.

Did you just sign up for a yoga class and now wondering what to wear? If you are planning to wear your gym tracksuit and shoes to yoga class, please stop! Yoga attire is much different from cardio or strength training clothing. Yoga clothing is specialized for various yoga poses- from Hatha Asanas to Bikram yoga, yoga clothing must be comfortable and breathable enough.

Yoga Pants For Women Are Everywhere What Do Men Wear To Yoga

Vinyasa Yoga Jumpsuit

All of the popular yoga brands like Lululemon mostly cater to women. The yoga pants craze has caused a huge surge in the options that are out there. These spandex tights are thick enough to be comfortable and modest, yet tight enough to be supportive for exercise.

They’re extremely popular because of their high level of comfort and stretch. Women often use them as loungewear or pajamas since they’re great for all-around use, not just for practicing yoga.

The yoga pants surge is generally not as common in menswear. Here are some examples of clothing men wear to yoga:

  • Running shorts
  • Spandex or compression shorts
  • Any moisture-wicking, fitted t-shirt or tank top

Well-known brands like Prana have developed shorts that are specifically made for yoga and they make these for men too.

What To Wear To Yoga Class To Feel Comfy And Look Awesome

When picking the right outfit for doing sports, we mostly go for baggy tops and comfy shoes. Still, these “rules” can’t be entirely applied to yoga.

Yoga is mostly about movements and relaxation, and the clothes we choose for that should be tight and breathable in order to perform the positions flawlessly.

Another factor that impacts the choice of yoga clothing is the type of yoga we want to attend – each type includes different conditions and postures, and that’s why the outfit needs to match the entire concept of the yoga class.

The article below will give you some examples of the yoga clothes that are suitable for different types of yoga practice – read on and find out what’s the best solution for your studio and class.

What To Wear To Hatha Yin Kundalini Or Restorative Yoga

While these practices are quite diverse, one thing they have in common is that they are generally slower and more relaxed. Full-length, high-rise pants minimise distractions and maximise comfort as you flow, while a breathable, long-sleeved top will keep you warm during the lengthier poses. Despite being a low-impact exercise, you’ll still need a crop top or sports bra with some support.

Dress For Yoga Practice Depends On The Type Of Class

You may not be aware as a beginner that there are several different yoga styles. Some styles focus on holding poses and some like to turn up the heat. The style of class will affect what you wear.

Typically beginner yoga classes will be Hatha or Vinyasa. Hatha tends to be at a slower pace and Vinyasa focuses more on movement. I find in my Vinyasa classes I may start off a little cold but I soon warm up!

Some yoga classes, Bikram and Hot Yoga, take place in a heated room with the intention of making you sweat. You’ll need to wear fast wicking fabrics that don’t leave sweat marks and close fitting shorts or cropped leggings.

If you opt for shorts just make sure they’re long enough. Really short shorts is a big no when it comes to yoga.

Unless you want to give your classmates an eyeful, , go for longer fitted shorts or capri length leggings. Avoid loose fitting shorts. Running shorts have no place in a yoga class.

That should be all the pitfalls avoided when it comes to what to wear to a yoga class. You can add a to your yoga outfit for your cool down or for cozy feet. Enjoy your class!

Ashtanga Yoga follows a specific sequence of asanas determined by which Ashtanga series you’re practicing. Because you can look these series up before heading to the studio, you can get a sense of what you may need to wear. Would you be at risk of slipping from some of the poses if you were wearing shorts versus standard, non-cotton yoga pants? If your series will have you going upside down , consider wearing a top that won’t fall over your face and block your vision!

Bikram/Hot Yoga

Cozy Orange Cardiff Crops*

  • My Point Of View On Vinyasa Yoga As A Yoga Teacher

I teach vinyasa yoga online and in person. I believe this style can be one of the most approachable and fun for beginners as you are fully guided in each posture and are working your body through smooth transitions into postures you didn’t know you were capable of, which is incredibly rewarding.

Since there is a lot of variety, it can also be a bit confusing to navigate as a beginner. This confusion can lead to injuries if you are unsure of how to do the poses or modify them for your body.

I recommend you also take some time to learn on your own, either with a private teacher or a guide to understanding how to make yoga work for your own body.

Luckily, I’ve got you covered with a free two-week vinyasa yoga PDF guide teaching how to safely practice at home and create your own vinyasa yoga routine:

What To Wear With Yoga Pants: Some Important Tips

    Vinyasa Yoga BodySuit

Yoga is an exercise that is truly beneficial for both the mind and body. There are numerous , however, if you are really serious about taking a class, it is essential to wear the proper clothing. You don’t have to splurge on your yoga workout clothes, but it is important to wear something that is comfortable and will keep everything in place. That is because certain yoga poses will put your body in an unusual position. As such, your go-to bottoms should definitely be the yoga pants and what to wear with yoga pants is an important consideration.

What To Wear For Different Types Of Yoga Classes

What to wear to a yoga class may change depending on the intensity and heat of the class. For slow flows like yin yoga or beginner classes, bring layers in class you get chilly. For intense or hot classes like power yoga or Bikram, be ready to get down to your lightest layers—and bring a towel and plenty of water.

The Relationship Between Ashtanga And Vinyasa

Do a little research on flow yoga and you run across this term “Ashtanga Vinyasa”.

The next thought is, “I thought they were two different styles of yoga. Is Vinyasa “Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga”?

To add to your confusion, you’ll find people who identify as practitioners of Ashtanga Vinyasa.

Ray Long, author, board certified orthopedic surgeon and student of B.K.S. Iyengar says, “Vinyasa Flow can be used to warm up the body for other types of practice or can embody the practice itself.

    Let’s make it simple.

    • Recall that T. Krishnamacharya is credited with innovating Vinyasa.
    • He taught K. Pattaboi Jois Vinyasa, but not Ashtanga.
    • Pattaboi Jois founded Ashtanga Yoga, which has the familiar Surya Namaskara A & B sequences in it.

Therefore, Vinyasa and Ashtanga most likely share a history but Vinyasa predates Ashtanga.

Ashtanga and Vinyasa are independent practices, that coupled then went their separate ways. Vinyasa became an innovation.

A student of Ashtanga Vinyasa practices Ashtanga Yoga, via the primary, secondary series, etc., while a Vinyasa practitioner practices flow yoga through a wide array of sequences that are connected through movement and breath.

Both Ashtanga and Vinyasa can use sun salutations to warm up the body, though the latter doesn’t have to.

If someone tried to compile all the styles of yoga being practiced, past and present, including the offshoots and burgeoning schools of thought, that list would be non-exhaustive. The truth is, there are so many subcultures within the culture of yoga itself that it’s difficult to get everyone together and decide on standards. That why we choose instead to embrace everyone’s differences and celebrate the variety of styles created and espoused in this world. That being said, you can’t just wear the same outfit for any class. You have to be aware of what a particular practice entails and how you can best prepare for it by way of being properly attired. Otherwise it would be like wearing football shoes to a basketball game. So here are some basic pointers to look out for when practicing certain styles.

Wear A Fitted Top And Go For A Thicker Mat

Ginger Harris, Kuudose founding Certified Pilates Expert and Three-Decade Yoga Enthusiast

Congrats! You’re about to attend your first yoga class. Prepare to be blissed out.

However, before you get to that stage of nirvana, there are a few things you need to know.

First, wear comfy pants you feel secure about attempting to wrap your legs around your head in , but wear something that allows you to move.

Here’s what you want to shy away from: shorts that are too short, shorts that are loose, anything that’s see-through when you bend forward. You’ll be doing a lot of that and you want to keep it modest.

Next, wear a fitted top. There is nothing worse than having your whole face covered when you are in downward dog so you can’t see what the teacher is teaching. Something fitted will stay put no matter what pose you wind up in.

The same goes for your hair, as you’ll be spending a portion of class upside down. Bring something to pull your hair back. To sock or not to sock, that is the question.

If you tend to get sweaty feet, grab a pair of socks with grip on the bottom. If you tend to grip with your toes, grab a pair with the toes cut out. But leave the regular socks at home. They will make you slip and slide instead of stick your poses.

You’ll also want to bring your mat. And make sure it’s one with a bit of thickness to it, as you’ll be spending a lot of time on it and the extra cushion will feel best on your spine, hips, wrists, etc.

Remember To Bring Some Water And A Smile

Rachel Baer, Yoga Alliance Registered ERYT

I am currently teaching from home via Zoom as the senior centers where I teach are closed to classes for now due to Covid 19.

Usually, people attending my classes need to wear comfortable clothing and just bring a water bottle and possibly a soft cushion so sit on for my chair yoga classes. I supply everything else, including the chairs.

Comfortable clothing can be defined as yoga pants or other exercise pants that will not inhibit movement, a comfortable top that is not too tight that you can easily move and stretch in.

Chair yoga enables seniors to participate in yoga poses without having to get up and down from the floor and to be able to use the chair for support when practicing balance poses.

Last year, I had a 95-year-old woman trying yoga for the first time. She was so amazed that she could do it and she loved it. She is now a regular participant.

However, those joining me for my current Zoom classes will need to have a sturdy comfortable chair, preferably without arms so as not to limit movement.

They will need a non-slip surface to place the chair such as a yoga mat or on a carpet, with enough space to stretch out the legs in front, reach out the arms to the sides and have space to stand behind the chair, which is used for support.

Other items to have within easy reach are a yoga strap a yoga block weights

Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated – and a smile is always great to “bring” with you to any yoga class.

What To Wear To Yoga Or While Doing Yoga

You already know every yogi needs her mat, water bottle, and yoga towel, but what should you wear while doing yoga? Okay, so technically, you could wear any old t-shirt and sweatpants and do yoga. Yoga is about a mindset, not what you’re wearing. But, that’s definitely not as fun. Yoga outfits get you in the mood for yoga, making it just that much easier to find that elusive third eye. Plus, yoga clothes are made for yoga

Yoga Attire You Need A Good Sports Bra

The first item for any female yogi is a good sports bra. By good, I mean a bra that’s supportive and gives decent coverage. You don’t want to be popping out in the middle of a pose!

It doesn’t have to be as supportive as a running bra but it does need to hold you in place. Your sports bra needs to be comfortable. You don’t want to be distracted during your yoga workout.

It’s also good to avoid any bras with fastenings at the back. You’ll be spending time doing floor work and you don’t anything digging in to your back!

I like the way this has flat seams for comfort on the mat.

Of course, you don’t need a yoga bra this decorative. This one from is simple and supportive.

It’s best to try out a few and make sure you find one that fits well with good support.

Suggested Skill Levels For Vinyasa Yoga

Vinyasa Flow Sports Bra Olive Moroccan

Much like hatha yoga, vinyasa is an ideal choice for anyone who is just starting out with yoga. But while hatha and vinyasa both incorporate multiple introductory postures to the class, vinyasa is a much quicker, more active style by comparison. Hatha classes tend to be slower and focus on the fundamental poses in a deliberate, meditative manner.

Vinyasa introduces similar fundamental poses through continuous movement. There is slightly more repetition involved to focus on learning the simple poses without a lot of variation.

This is not to suggest that every vinyasa class is fast-paced. Every class is different, every instructor emphasizing certain facets of the style in contrasting ways and varied speeds. One instructor might choose to teach a faster, more active style while another might place more importance on alignment over pace. If you are just getting started and want to try a vinyasa course, ask your studio which instructors or classes appeal most to your sensibility.

Beginner Tips For Your First Yoga Class

    • Treat it as a learning experience: Explore what feels right for your unique self. How does your body feel in certain poses? Is one side easier than the other? How does your mind feel?

    • Focus on how the pose feels not on ow the pose looks: There’s no room for comparison on the mat! You know what happens if you finally manage to do this complicated pose you’ve seen all over Instagram? Nothing. Take the option that feels good for your body and if it hurts don’t do it!

    • Don’t forget to breathe! If you have to only do one thing in your first yoga class, just breathe!

    • Prepare for it: know your body and if you have injuries or are pregnant, don’t forget to tell the teacher, they will give you modifications.

    • Basic vinyasa is not necessarily easy! Starting yoga is sometimes harder than it seems.
