Best Hair Styles For Yoga
Buns are my ultimate favorite or a french braid. It depends on how long your hair is. If you have long hair like me, avoid high ponytails, they might look super cute but it will only get in the way and smack your face. For those of you with bangs, be sure to use bobby pins to help keep it out of your face.
If you find yourself in yoga class spending more time thinking about your outfit than your breath and balancing, then you are wearing the wrong outfit and need to read over this guide one more time.
Yoga Attire You Need A Good Sports Bra
The first item for any female yogi is a good sports bra. By good, I mean a bra thats supportive and gives decent coverage. You dont want to be popping out in the middle of a pose!
It doesnt have to be as supportive as a running bra but it does need to hold you in place. Your sports bra needs to be comfortable. You dont want to be distracted during your yoga workout.
Its also good to avoid any bras with fastenings at the back. Youll be spending time doing floor work and you dont have anything digging into your back!
I like the way this yoga bra from Running Girl has flat seams for comfort on the mat.
Of course, you dont need a yoga bra this decorative. This one from Gaiam is simple and supportive.
Its best to try out a few different yoga bras and make sure you find one that fits well with good support.
How To Choose Yoga Clothes
Refining a downward dog or trying a new balance pose at the yoga studio is challenging enough on its own, but its made even harder when youre fiddling with sagging, too tight or uncomfortable yoga clothes. Thats why its important to purchase clothes that are breathable, flexible and comfortable.
Your yoga clothing purchases will depend largely on personal preference, as well as the style of yoga you plan to practice. But at a high level, heres what to wear to yoga :
- Breathable, flexible bottoms like yoga pants or shorts
- A breathable, narrow- or form-fitting top that wont hang over your head when youre upside down.
- For women, a sports bra or built-in shelf bra that offers enough support for the type of yoga youre practicing
- A comfortable, warm top layer for end-of-class savasana or after class when youve cooled down

While these practices are quite diverse, one thing they have in common is that they are generally slower and more relaxed. Full-length, high-rise pants minimise distractions and maximise comfort as you flow, while a breathable, long-sleeved top will keep you warm during the lengthier poses. Despite being a low-impact exercise, youll still need a crop top or sports bra with some support.
Do Girls Wear Thongs Under Yoga Pants

Thongs were the footwear of choice for 52 percent of the 79 respondents who said they had just begun recently. Among those who do not wear thong underwear, 29 percent claimed they do so, and 19 percent said they do not wear anything at all. People above the age of 30 tended to prefer to go commando.

Your Clothes Should Be Comfortable And Allow For Ease Of Movement
Donna Brown, Author and Certified Yoga Teacher
I teach two beginning yoga classes a week, one a regular mat class, and the other a chair class for those less mobile. They average between three to eight students per class, which allows us the luxury of socializing from a distance.
My students wear clothes designed for comfort rather than fashion, .
Regardless of what you wear, I feel that clothes should be comfortable and allow for ease of movement.
Over the 20-plus years Ive taught yoga, Ive seen all types of attire, from yoga pants to stylish leotards that were so tight, I wondered how the students could even move!
Ive also attended a hot yoga class where the instructor yelled out the poses over her headphone mic, and I dont know if the horrible headache I had was due to severe dehydration, or from an ungodly decibel level of the teachers voice!
Perhaps beginner students should do some research on hot yoga classes and the inherent dangers of participation especially with those with cardiac and high blood pressure problems.
For first time students, I highly recommend bringing their own mat, one to two yoga blocks, a strap, and a towel or blanket to use as a cover or bolster to place under their head and/or knees to enhance deep relaxation at the end of class.
I suggest a student bring two blocks for use especially during the lunges that are part of Sun Salutations, to aid with balance and stability.

Look For Extra Features
If you’re going to a hot yoga class or are concerned about excessive perspiration, make a point to find yoga clothes featuring a couple of key details. Mesh, for instance, is more than just a stylish addition it’ll also maximize air flow and promote ventilation.
And be sure to choose materials that resist moisture, such as nylon and spandex. According to the University of Georgia College of Family and Consumer Sciences, nylon is extremely durable and has low moisture absorption, while spandex also has wicking properties and resists perspiration.

Dress For Yoga Practice Depends On The Type Of Class
You may not be aware as a beginner that there are several different yoga styles. Some styles focus on holding poses and some like to turn up the heat. The style of class will affect what you wear.
Typically beginner yoga classes will be Hatha or Vinyasa. Hatha tends to be at a slower pace and Vinyasa focuses more on movement. I find in my Vinyasa classes I may start off a little cold but I soon warm up!
Some yoga classes, Bikram and Hot Yoga take place in a heated room with the intention of making you sweat. Youll need to wear fast-wicking fabrics that dont leave sweat marks and close-fitting shorts or cropped leggings.
If you opt for shorts just make sure theyre long enough. Really short shorts is a big no when it comes to yoga.
Unless you want to give your classmates an eyeful, , go for longer fitted shorts or capri length leggings. Avoid loose-fitting shorts. Running shorts have no place in a yoga class.
That should be all the pitfalls avoided when it comes to what to wear to a yoga class. You can add a wrap to your yoga outfit for your cool down or yoga socks for cozy feet. For guys, dont feel left out! Find out what men wear to yoga Enjoy your class!

The term âyoga pantsâ truly does mean pants for yoga. You canât go wrong with this classic choice. Not only are they comfortable and will also you to move freely but they will also absorb sweat. Yoga pants will also make it easier to do poses that require you to balance against your legs by providing traction.
Colors! Avoid wearing that favorite pair of leggings that youâve had since high school. Chances are your old clothing has started to wear and the material around the crotch area has started to thin out.
My favorite place to get comfortable leggings is from Fitness Junkies. They also have snug tops with sleeves that are very soft and comfortable! Read my Fitness Junkies activewear review and get 15% off!
Also, avoid super light colored bottoms because these tend to be see-through when stretched out. Slip on a pair of black, navy or other dark-colored bottoms that are made of good material. If you have been buying cheap clothing to save a few bucks you might want to invest in a solid pair of yoga pants. No one knows yoga quite like Yoga Outlet, they have the best yoga styles and their yoga clothing is made from quality materials.
Think About Buying A Premium Yoga Mat
Kelly Clifton Turner, ERYT 500 and Director of Education for YogaSix
For the first 10 years I practiced yoga, I would use cheaper mats purchased at places like Tuesday Morning, Target, or Amazon. They did the trick, but would often fall apart or peel within a year or two.
The thought of spending $80 to 100 for a mat was insane when I could get one for $10-20 in other retailers. Once I made the leap, I finally got why the investment was worth it. I ended up buying a Manduka Pro Lite, which retails for about $80. Ive had it now for over 10 years, and its still in perfect shape.
Its also more supportive on my joints if Im practicing somewhere with hardwood or tile floors.
For hot yoga, leggings that do well tend to be some sort of performance material usually a synthetic blend that helps the pants keep their shape, and wick sweat.
A straight cotton fabric tends to become saturated and weigh down as the class goes on and the heat builds. Additionally, most students prefer a form fit in order to avoid getting tangled up.

Types Of Yoga Classes
If youre not familiar with yoga, you may want to do some research into the different class types before beginning. Far from just one thing, yoga can refer to many different classes. As such, its important to know the differences to find the right one for you. Knowing which yoga youre attending will also help to manage your expectations and give you a guide on what to wear. For example, Bikram and hot yoga classes are taught in a heated room, meaning that youll sweat. As such, these detoxifying sessions demand clothes that are designed to wick away moisture.
If you are attending a beginner class, it may be a Hatha or Vinyasa type. These classes are focused on coordinating movement and breath with Vinyasa being slightly faster and involving more intense stretching, leg lifting, and inversions. Iyengar yoga, on the other hand, focuses on poses that you would hold for a longer period of time, allowing you to find your balance and deepen the stretch. This style of yoga will also often use props. There are also Power and Ashtanga yoga classes that involve constant movement between poses, making them more challenging than other types.
Leggings Capris And Harlem Pants

Some yoginis and more advanced yoga students wear loose fitting harlem pants to classes. But if you’re just going on your first yoga for beginners class, we suggest you take the leggings or capri pants route. This is because you will need to first get used to doing the poses and learn to do them properly. Wearing long stretchy pants is not recommended among beginners because you might step on the hem while switching between poses, although this isnt too much of an issue and can be easily worked out. Wearing snug-fitting bottoms will make it easier for you to check the alignment of your hips, legs, and knees with the different yoga positions you’ll be doing.

What To Wear To Vinyasa Yoga
Variety is the spice of life. If its time to level up your yoga skills, consider a more fast-paced flow that Vinyasa, or power yoga, provides. Unlike Ashtanga yoga with a set sequence of moves, each Vinyasa class will vary depending on the instructor. Not sure what to wear to Vinyasa yoga? Since this form of yoga focuses on endurance and strength training, reach for clothing that allows for ease of movement. Place an emphasis on your outfit having stretch since youll be transitioning from one pose directly to the next.

Best Choice: Wear Long Fitted Tanks For Yoga
Long and Fitted: Your best bet is to wear long, fitted tank tops for yoga. Youâll want to choose a top that will keep you covered while you move, twist and bend. I Love wearing bright colored tops!
It adds personality to your outfit so go crazy! Just make sure they are made of good quality material and arenât see through. If you arenât sure where to find those checkout YogaOutlet.com, they are far cheaper than your local shops and fitness shop.
Proper Chest Support: Make sure your breasts are getting the right amount of support. You should be wearing a shorts bar or a sports top with a built-in bra if you are smaller chested. If you are big-busted, avoid V-necks or light weight sports bars. Some tops might make you think you have the right support but itâs better to be safe than have a nip-slip incident.

Tops To Wear To Yoga Class
Avoid T-shirt, short, or baggy shirts: T-shirts are probably the worst option, they will fall right over your head over time you in are the downward facing dog position! If you are not comfortable with letting your belly show, donât go with short tops either. Many poses in Yoga involve putting your arms above your head.
