One-Minute Yoga Tip #1: How to make a bolster from things you have at home

For our smaller bolsters and breathing bolsters, the cover can be easily cleaned in any washing machine on a cold cycle and hung to dry. The covers to our larger round and rectangular bolsters, especially either of the Max Support Bolsters, should be dry-cleaned only to prevent shrinkage or damage. Of course, the cotton batting is completely replaceable, convenient for yoga studio owners whose bolsters often get heavy use. All of our bolsters have access points to remove/re-stuff/replace the inside batting. ;

How To Make The Bolster

Take your trousers and lay them flat. I used a pair of Thai Fishermans Trousers which have a tie around the waist. I cut the two strands off and used them instead of shoelaces.

Then start by cutting your trousers in half, down the centre. You can actually make two bolsters from one pair of trousers .

now, so that it is a full tube before you start stuffing).


Take the narrow end of one leg, gather the fabric together and tie the shoelace tightly around the fabric. Double knot it.

Start stuffing! Overstuff the leg as much as you can, really pack it in. It helps if you try to keep it fairly even and not too lumpy, and as firm as possible.

Keep stuffing until you get to the upper part of the leg where the groin and waistband are. I used very wide trousers with a low groin so I have a big gap. Yours may be smaller if you are using a different style of trouser.

If you have sewn the leg you can just keep stuffing.

If not you will need to safety pin the upper part of the leg together. Make sure there is an overlap so that the stuffing doesnt pop out.


Pin all the way up, till about 10 cm from the top of the trouser leg.

Carry on stuffing until the whole leg is full and firm, with as little lumpiness as possible. Stop around 10cm from the top of the leg

Gather the remaining fabric and tie it tightly with your other shoelace or tie. Double knot.

And thats it. You have a DIY yoga bolster made entirely from recycled materials!

And it matches up pretty well to the shop bought version!

  • Something for stuffing.;You know all those clean but worn clothes that really arent good enough for donations, but youre loathe to just toss? They work well in here. I had socks, underwear, pajamas, etc. that are now so helpfully stuffing my yoga bolster.

What Is A Bolster

At the end of your session, you want to achieve complete relaxation of body and mind, to find calmness, and thats why the shavasana pose is important. Shavasana literally means corpse pose in Sanskrit because you lay on your back like in death.


However, lying on a hard, flat surface can be uncomfortable, preventing you from achieving the necessary stillness and peace. A bolster placed directly under your knees allows your legs to float free.

Once the bolster is in place, take a really deep breath, then exhale, letting all the stress drift away. Then allow all your muscles to relax, as if theyre melting down into the floor.

Yoga bolsters are like large pillows, but firmer to provide more support and with a distinct fixed shape which varies from bolster to bolster depending upon their purpose. Most yoga bolsters fall into one of four types:

  • Standard rectangular in shape and the most common kind of bolster used in restorative yoga. They are very versatile and offer support and stability for a wide variety of poses.
  • Round cylindrical in shape and perfect for sliding under your knees when performing the shavasana pose. They also provide great support for a variety of restorative poses.
  • Pranayama cylindrical but much thinner than a round bolster. As implied by its name, this bolster is used for Pranayamic breathing exercises. This bolster may be used to improve your breathing while performing yoga. When placed under the length of your spine, it facilitates expansion of your chest and rib cage for deep, long breaths. These are not so versatile as other bolsters and are not suitable for poses where you require a lot of support.

What better time than right now to get on the sewing machine and create something comfy.

There has been a great big pile of worn out clothing in the corner of our lounge room for several weeks now and as soon as the assignments were submitted I got my act together to turn the pile of junk into something useful A bolster! Some of you may know that I have studied yoga teaching and one of my little dreams is to teach from a home studio under my deck when the flow allows us to renovate. This bolster is the first of many that I plan to make for my studio from fabrics I was lucky enough to find secondhand;at my local landfill recycle market;for a total of under ten dollars . The bolster is;something for me to use now and a continual reminder to myself that the dream studio is coming my way.

To make a bolster of your own you will need:

  • Fabric
  • A sewing machine
  • Pins
  • Stuffing

The first big decision of this relatively easy sewing process is working out how big you want your bolster to be. As I am planning to use my bolster for restorative yoga practice they need to be quite large. I chose a dinner plate and traced around it twice .

Once you have sewn both ends on turn the bolster the right way out by feeding it through the small hole you left for the stuffing. It should look pretty awesome when you look at it from the right way out!

How To Sew Your Bolster

    Cut your fabric to size, dont forget to leave some extra room for seam allowance

  • Pin then;sew the long sides of the big piece of fabric together, with the right sides of the fabric together
  • Pin one small pieces onto an;open ends of the large piece if the corners dont match perfectly, it will be an ovular end, which will also work
  • Sew the small end piece into place
  • Repeat with the other end piece, but leave an opening for the stuffing rather than sewing all the way around
  • Turn the pillow right-side out
  • Stuff it FULL
  • With a needle and thread, stitch up the opening you left for stuffing

    What Is A Yoga Bolster

    A yoga bolster is a large, heavy pillow. It is large enough to rest your full back on.;

    Sometimes when you go to a studio, the bolsters are pretty well loved, or you dont know exactly who has used them. Its so easy to make your own and you know exactly who has used it!

    What you need for your yoga bolster
    • 1 yard fabric
    • 4 towels
    • Polyfill Another product people often use for yoga bolsters is kapok filler. This is a more expensive option but would be SUPER soft!
    • Thread

    I started by cutting two strips 12×36, two strips 6×36, 2 strips 12×6, and 2 strips 2×6.

    Take the two smallest strips and fold in the 6 inch edge by 1/4 inch and sew it. These will be your handles on the edge.

    Sew these strips onto the 12×6 sized strips in the center.

    Sew the largest four strips together along the 36 inch side. You will sew these with the patterned sides facing each other.

    Sew on one of the 12×6 inch strips the same way.;

    The last 12×6 strip I sewed two sides with the patterned side together, then flipped the whole thing right side out.

    Then comes the towels. This seems strange, but youll love the weight! Towels are my inexpensive alternative to dense filler. Put your towels inside your bolster. I used 4 full sized towels.

    Then youll put in some polyfill around the edges so its not uneven and softer.;

    Then youll sew the final edges closed. This was the hardest part because I used the sewing machine.
