Cleaning And Care Information
For our smaller bolsters and breathing bolsters, the cover can be easily cleaned in any washing machine on a cold cycle and hung to dry. The covers to our larger round and rectangular bolsters, especially either of the Max Support Bolsters, should be dry-cleaned only to prevent shrinkage or damage. Of course, the cotton batting is completely replaceable, convenient for yoga studio owners whose bolsters often get heavy use. All of our bolsters have access points to remove/re-stuff/replace the inside batting. ;
How To Make The Bolster
Take your trousers and lay them flat. I used a pair of Thai Fishermans Trousers which have a tie around the waist. I cut the two strands off and used them instead of shoelaces.
Then start by cutting your trousers in half, down the centre. You can actually make two bolsters from one pair of trousers .
now, so that it is a full tube before you start stuffing).
Take the narrow end of one leg, gather the fabric together and tie the shoelace tightly around the fabric. Double knot it.
Start stuffing! Overstuff the leg as much as you can, really pack it in. It helps if you try to keep it fairly even and not too lumpy, and as firm as possible.
Keep stuffing until you get to the upper part of the leg where the groin and waistband are. I used very wide trousers with a low groin so I have a big gap. Yours may be smaller if you are using a different style of trouser.
If you have sewn the leg you can just keep stuffing.
If not you will need to safety pin the upper part of the leg together. Make sure there is an overlap so that the stuffing doesnt pop out.
Pin all the way up, till about 10 cm from the top of the trouser leg.
Carry on stuffing until the whole leg is full and firm, with as little lumpiness as possible. Stop around 10cm from the top of the leg
Gather the remaining fabric and tie it tightly with your other shoelace or tie. Double knot.
And thats it. You have a DIY yoga bolster made entirely from recycled materials!
And it matches up pretty well to the shop bought version!

- Fabric: A good upholstery fabric will work well and be durable.
- Something for stuffing.;You know all those clean but worn clothes that really arent good enough for donations, but youre loathe to just toss? They work well in here. I had socks, underwear, pajamas, etc. that are now so helpfully stuffing my yoga bolster.

What Is A Bolster
Traditional bolster pillows have been around a long time. A bolster is a long, firm, narrow, often cylindrical cushion or pillow that is placed under other pillows for support on a bed or a sofa. You can still buy bolster pillows to provide greater support for both day and night today.
So more specifically what is a yoga bolster?
A yoga bolster is a popular yoga accessory used to provide comfort, support poses and increase stretching during restorative postures and deep breathing exercises. Most of the yoga accessories that we consider popular now like the yoga bolster werent really used much within a yoga practice until the 1960s, when yoga teachers such as B.K.S. Iyengar noticed that many of their students had trouble maintaining proper posture in certain poses due to injury or lack of flexibility. Iyengar therefore developed and introduced props and equipment to help people access poses with greater comfort and better form.
Shavasana The Final Resting Pose
At the end of your session, you want to achieve complete relaxation of body and mind, to find calmness, and thats why the shavasana pose is important. Shavasana literally means corpse pose in Sanskrit because you lay on your back like in death.
However, lying on a hard, flat surface can be uncomfortable, preventing you from achieving the necessary stillness and peace. A bolster placed directly under your knees allows your legs to float free.
Once the bolster is in place, take a really deep breath, then exhale, letting all the stress drift away. Then allow all your muscles to relax, as if theyre melting down into the floor.

Cushion Your Knees Or Back With A Yoga Bolster
Yoga is an inclusive activity that should appeal to people of all ages, abilities and fitness and flexibility levels. It’s gentle enough for the pregnant, but demanding enough to give you an intense and sweaty workout.
Like any new activity, though, it can be intimidating in the beginning. People who arenât as supple and limber as seasoned yogis may find the poses too challenging. Yet rather than give up, they should look into yoga bolsters for support.
A yoga bolster is a firm cushion that makes the practice of yoga more comfortable. It can be especially useful to people with injuries or women who are pregnant and suffer from lower back pain. It relieves excessive tension and gives the body a chance to adapt to new and especially challenging poses.
Yoga bolsters are pillowlike props that come in assorted colors, sizes and shapes, including cylinders, rectangles and squares. A cylindrical or rectangular bolster can be placed under the small of your back or under your knees during poses such as Savasana . This puts less strain on your body and makes the process more fluid and restful. A flat, square foam pad or round Zafu works well for meditation. To use, slide it under your sit bone to raise your hips and increase your comfort level. You can also use these pads to support sensitive knees. A yoga bolster can make relaxing at home more pleasant, too; just slide one under your body when youâre lying down reading or watching TV.

Restorative Yoga Poses With Bolster
Youll likely find that a bolster can be a big help when performing different restorative or yin yoga poses. Practicing restorative yoga with a bolster also allows you to relax and enjoy your session a lot more.
Below, Ive highlighted a few of my go-to yoga bolster poses and how to perform them. So here are some of my favorite restorative poses with a bolster that you can practice at home too:
The Types Of Yoga Bolsters
Yoga bolsters are like large pillows, but firmer to provide more support and with a distinct fixed shape which varies from bolster to bolster depending upon their purpose. Most yoga bolsters fall into one of four types:
- Standard rectangular in shape and the most common kind of bolster used in restorative yoga. They are very versatile and offer support and stability for a wide variety of poses.
- Round cylindrical in shape and perfect for sliding under your knees when performing the shavasana pose. They also provide great support for a variety of restorative poses.
- Zafu a low disk shape like a stool. This is a traditional meditation cushion.
- Pranayama cylindrical but much thinner than a round bolster. As implied by its name, this bolster is used for Pranayamic breathing exercises. This bolster may be used to improve your breathing while performing yoga. When placed under the length of your spine, it facilitates expansion of your chest and rib cage for deep, long breaths. These are not so versatile as other bolsters and are not suitable for poses where you require a lot of support.
There are other shapes, but these four are the most common ones you will come across in yoga studios or for sale for use at home.

What better time than right now to get on the sewing machine and create something comfy.
There has been a great big pile of worn out clothing in the corner of our lounge room for several weeks now and as soon as the assignments were submitted I got my act together to turn the pile of junk into something useful A bolster! Some of you may know that I have studied yoga teaching and one of my little dreams is to teach from a home studio under my deck when the flow allows us to renovate. This bolster is the first of many that I plan to make for my studio from fabrics I was lucky enough to find secondhand;at my local landfill recycle market;for a total of under ten dollars . The bolster is;something for me to use now and a continual reminder to myself that the dream studio is coming my way.
To make a bolster of your own you will need:
- A sewing machine
The first big decision of this relatively easy sewing process is working out how big you want your bolster to be. As I am planning to use my bolster for restorative yoga practice they need to be quite large. I chose a dinner plate and traced around it twice .
Once you have sewn both ends on turn the bolster the right way out by feeding it through the small hole you left for the stuffing. It should look pretty awesome when you look at it from the right way out!
How To Find The Right Bolster For You
Yoga and meditation bolsters have many practical uses and are increasingly being incorporated in classes, as well as in at-home Yoga practices. Which one will do what you need it to do?Below we compare the variations to not only help you understand what they are, but also to help you choose the right bolster for you and your needs.

Supported Sukhasana Easy Pose
Its name implies that this pose is easy, but because in the western world we rarely sit cross-legged upon the floor, this is not a posture we are accustomed to. It is a pose frequently adopted during yoga classes, and can grow tiring to maintain for a long period of time. Your bolster can help.
Sit atop your bolster with your ankles crossed. Lower your knees down in front so that they touch the floor while your rear remains on the bolster. Roll your shoulders and hold your hands in a comfortable position. Breathe.

What Is A Yoga Bolster
A yoga bolster is a large, heavy pillow. It is large enough to rest your full back on.;
Sometimes when you go to a studio, the bolsters are pretty well loved, or you dont know exactly who has used them. Its so easy to make your own and you know exactly who has used it!
What you need for your yoga bolster
- 1 yard fabric
- 4 towels
- Polyfill Another product people often use for yoga bolsters is kapok filler. This is a more expensive option but would be SUPER soft!
I started by cutting two strips 12×36, two strips 6×36, 2 strips 12×6, and 2 strips 2×6.
Take the two smallest strips and fold in the 6 inch edge by 1/4 inch and sew it. These will be your handles on the edge.
Sew these strips onto the 12×6 sized strips in the center.
Sew the largest four strips together along the 36 inch side. You will sew these with the patterned sides facing each other.
Sew on one of the 12×6 inch strips the same way.;
The last 12×6 strip I sewed two sides with the patterned side together, then flipped the whole thing right side out.
Then comes the towels. This seems strange, but youll love the weight! Towels are my inexpensive alternative to dense filler. Put your towels inside your bolster. I used 4 full sized towels.
Then youll put in some polyfill around the edges so its not uneven and softer.;
Then youll sew the final edges closed. This was the hardest part because I used the sewing machine.
What You Need To Know Before You Buy A Yoga Bolster
May 24, 2018
Have you ever wondered what makes the bolster in your yoga studio so good and what separates a great bolster from a bad one? A great bolster can transform your yoga practice and can be used in almost any style of yoga. The catch is, not all bolsters are alike.
Walk into any yoga studio in Canada, and youll likely come across bolsters that were made by Halfmoon. You can tell that a bolster is excellent quality when it is firm and doesnt bend or sag easily. Props in yoga studios go through a lot of wear and tear, but youll find Halfmoon bolsters keep their support for years!;Here are three things to look for in a bolster, whether you are a studio owner, a teacher or a yoga lover.
1. Removable Cover with HandlesA removable, washable cover is essential not only for yoga studios who need to wash their covers, but also anyone who uses their bolster regularly. Bolsters, like yoga blankets are often used directly against our skin and are left on the floor for long periods of time. Washing those covers occasionally is an important part of bolster care.
- When you wash your covers, wash them in cold water and hang them to dry so they dont shrink).
- Learn how to put your cover on your bolster here.
“I purchased my first bolster from Halfmoon over 10 years ago , so it was a given that I would buy my second one from them. The quality, service and craftsmanship is amazing! I’ll be purchasing more!!”

Be Mindful Of The Outer Material
Do you have sensitive skin? If yes, it is important that you are mindful of the covering of your yoga prop.
Some yoga bolsters leave harsh imprints on your skin or cause a rash as the material reacts with your sweat or pores. Yoga bolsters with less complex designs are perfect since they are usually made of a single material. A lot of materials on the outer layer can be detrimental to sensitive skin.
As yoga bolsters come in contact with your body, it is best to choose safe, non-toxic yoga bolsters. Stick to organic cotton, buckwheat hulls, and other plant-based materials for soothing sessions.
