Whats In A Yoga Instructor Salary
There seems to be more than a little bit of confusion surrounding the average salary of a certified yoga instructor.
In the United States, yoga instructors make an average of $24.96 per hour, making anywhere from 31K-100K, with the national average clocking in at wait for it $60K.
Real US dollars, not Monopoly money.
Now, depending on where you live in the United States, the notion of a $60K annual salary might sound pretty sweet.or wholly underwhelming.
To reach that figure, you would basically have to teach 26 yoga classes per week for a whole year, at the rate of $50 per class. This hourly rate is shall we say, not extremely commonplace.
Which is why when someone asks so, whats an average salary of a yoga teacher? you cant just throw out five-figure salary figures and shout NEXT QUESTION!

How Do You Greet A Yoga Teacher
If you are new to the yoga class, you have to greet Namaste by using your hands. This will help inner strength along with outer exercise. One has to enter the classroom quietly by removing their shoes, and we have to stop them from using a phone to talk to anyone.
Now get ready for the class by sitting on the mat, and it will help you perform stretches and other things. When the teacher arrives at the class, then you have to give a Namaste greeting.
Folding the hands for Namaste will help keep the hands together in a prayer-like situation called Anjali mudra. Also, after the class ends, greet the instructor of the class with a namaste again for practicing further.

Yoga In Advaita Vedanta
Vedanta is a varied tradition with numerous sub-schools and philosophical views. Vedanta focuses on the study of the Upanishads, and one of its early texts, the Brahma sutras. Regarding yoga or meditation, the Brahma sutras focuses on gaining spiritual knowledge of Brahman, the unchanging absolute reality or Self.
One of the earliest and most influential sub-traditions of Vedanta, is Advaita Vedanta, which posits non-dualisticmonism. This tradition emphasizes JñÄna yoga , which is aimed at realizing the identity of one’s atman with Brahman . The most influential thinker of this school is Adi Shankara , who wrote various commentaries and original works which teach JñÄna yoga. In Advaita Vedanta, JñÄna is attained on the basis of scripture and one’s guru and through a process of listening to teachings, thinking and reflecting on them and finally meditating on these teachings in order to realize their truth. It is also important to develop qualities such as discrimination , renunciation , tranquility, temperance, dispassion, endurance, faith, attention and a longing for knowledge and freedom .’ Yoga in Advaita is ultimately a “meditative exercise of withdrawal from the particular and identification with the universal, leading to contemplation of oneself as the most universal, namely, Consciousness”.

In order to find out what your teacher wants to be called, you can ask them, or pay attention to what other students refer to them as during the yoga practice.

Take A Yoga Teacher Training Program
Youll also need to do some training programs for teaching yoga. There are many different programs you can choose from, including online and in-person training courses. You can also choose which type of yoga you want to do training in these include vinyasa, Hatha, Ashtanga, yin, restorative, prenatal, and many more.
The most common format to do this training in is a 200-hour program. However, you can also do 300 and 500-hour programs, though its best to start with a 200-hour program. You can complete this program over the course of a month in intensive in-person training or at your own pace with online training.
These courses cover a lot of information in quite a short amount of time, including yoga poses, terminology, human anatomy, and yoga philosophy, to name a few. They also include group or individual training sessions so that your teacher can see your progress. And once you have completed the course, you will be a certified yoga teacher, which is really where the hard work begins.
Engage In Effortless Communication
Teaching yoga requires you to be a great communicator. Its important to think about the ways you address your class, whether it be speaking in a tone that everyone can hear, or inunciating your words so you are well understood. This can take practice and doesnt always happen overnight, so practice teaching to your friends, family or coworkers! Eventually, you will get to a place where your communication seems unadorned and effortless.

How To Become A Yoga Instructor In The 21st Century
To understand how becoming a yoga teacher has evolved from years of apprenticeship to month-long training, we need to look at yogas evolution in the last century. During the first half of the 20th century, two critical shifts happened: Yoga became more focused on asanas physical practice. Over the same period, this new physical yoga made its way to the West, gaining fast-growing popularity.
To respond to the increasing demand for yoga teachers, yoga schools started appearing worldwide, and programs were developed to mass-produce yoga instructors. In the 1990s, a group of instructors began to discuss the need to establish a national standard for yoga instructor training, and from this, Yoga Alliance US was born.
Today, the typical path to becoming a yoga instructor is to follow a 200 or 500-hour yoga teacher training with a reputed yoga school. These are offered in various formats, last from a few weeks to a few years, and are delivered in-person or online. Selecting the right training involves considering the style of yoga you wish to learn, the time you are willing to dedicate, and the learning environment you want to surround yourself with. Also Read> > > 10 Things to Consider when Choosing your online yoga teacher training

Understand The Yoga Alliance
Number two, certification in the yoga world is something thats very much in flux. Yogas not really regulated by the state or at the national level.
So you can pay Yoga Alliance for permission to use their RYT trademark after your name, but it doesnt actually, really mean anything at the government, state, or national level.
So it may or may not be worth doing, based on your personal goals.
If you wanna deep-dive with me into what certification really means, I absolutely suggest you listen to this podcast, where I go into a lot more detail.
So what is an RYT certification for, then?
Its mostly for yoga and fitness studios in the US to assure that the yoga instructors they hire have completed a minimum level of education as a yoga instructor. It doesnt, however, ensure that you actually practice yoga, that you have any teaching skills, or that your training program was of high quality.
While it is certainly helpful when applying for a teaching job at a yoga studio, its not necessary for other more lucrative teaching gigs .
If youre clear about your goals for your training program, then youll be more clear about whether or not an RYT certification is necessary.
What Is A Yoga Therapist
Yoga therapy is a growing field that incorporates the mental and physical benefits of yoga as a complementary treatment of an ailment or disease.
All yoga is considered therapeutic and healing, but yoga therapy addresses a persons physical, mental, and emotional needs through the implementation of yoga poses, breathing exercises, and meditation practices.
Yoga therapists are qualified to recognize and assess a persons need for yoga therapy to address specific dysfunctions and improve their overall well being.
Therapeutic yoga addresses several health issues, both physical and mental, or both at the same time. Unlike traditional yoga classes that have many students, yoga therapy is typically taught one-on-one or among only small groups.
There is a separate organization that monitors the standards of practice for yoga therapists. It is called the International Association of Yoga Therapists . To be recognized as a Registered yoga therapist by this organization, you must undergo at least 800 hours of training.
In a typical yoga session, the student is instructed in the proper form and execution of established yoga poses. Whereas a yoga therapist will use yoga to address the specific health issues of the student. Some issues for which people seek relief through yoga are:
- Musculoskeletal imbalances
- Recovery from abuse or addiction
- Chronic pain

It depends. The Yoga Alliance is the most well-known organization that provides an RYT certification, though they dont provide those certificates to those who graduate from an online program. The YA traditionally requires contact hours to qualify for an RYT certification. Recently, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they temporarily allowed yoga schools to offer their programs online.
Do Different Groups Of People Have Different Experiences With Yoga
Much of the research on yoga in the United States has been conducted in predominantly female, non-Hispanic White, well-educated people with relatively high incomes. Other peopleâparticularly members of minority groups and those with lower incomesâhave been underrepresented in yoga studies.
Different groups of people may have different yoga-related experiences, and the results of studies that did not examine a diverse population may not apply to everyone.

The Role Of A Yoga Instructor
Teaching yoga goes far beyond creating sequences and instructing postures. The yoga instructors role is to create a safe and nurturing environment and guide students through mindful practices to quiet the mind and connect to ourselves. On top of understanding the anatomy of movement and intricacies of yoga postures, a yoga teacher must also know and embody yogas philosophy.
Therefore, we could see the yoga teachers role as twofold: On a more superficial level, a yoga instructor must understand the human body to guide movements, postures, and death safely. On a deeper level, a yoga instructor inspires students to live a mindful life and creates subtle thought patterns transformation.
Other Names For Yoga Teachers
Yoga teachers and instructors can also be referred to as yogis however, this term isnt exclusive to teachers, as anyone who is committed to practicing yoga regularly is known as a yogi.
You could also use the term guru to describe someone who teaches and instructs others in the practice of yoga. However, in the yoga tradition, you would be very fortunate to be called a guru, so you should be very careful when using that term, as it is not used as lightly as it is in the westernized world.
Suppose you want to be very respectful towards the person who is teaching or instructing you through your yoga practice. In that case, you could call them Sri , which is the Sanskrit word for the English equivalent of Mr or Mrs, and is used to show respect or veneration and is a polite way of addressing someone whom you admire.
If you are ever in doubt about what to call the person who leads your yoga class, you could simply call them by their name or whatever term of respect is used in your culture.
