Meaning Of Anjali Mudra The Prayer Position
Although Anjali mudra is the position you should take when saying “namaste”, the intention to put your hands together should not be construed as a form of prayer. The misunderstanding stems from the fact that Anjali mudra is typically described in the West as the “prayer pose”.
It is important to understand, however, that although the gesture is one that we associate with Christian, Hindu, and other religious practices, it does not have the same meaning in yogic practices.
Anjali in Sanskrit simply means “offering” or “greeting”, while mudra means “seal”. As such, the pose is intended to symbolize the homage and celebration of this moment.

Namaste As An Ethical Commitment
In todays global yoga culture, namaste is typically said at the end of class. As I understand, for yogis, saying namaste is a moment of contemplating the virtues associated with yoga including peacefulness, compassion, and gratitude and how to bring those into ones daily life.
I asked Swami Tattwamayananda, the head of the Vedanta Society of Northern California in San Francisco and one of the worlds leading authorities on Hindu ritual and scripture, how he felt about Americans like me saying namaste.
He responded: It is perfectly appropriate for everyone, including Westerners like yourself to say namaste at the end of your yoga classes. He also reiterated that namaste means I bow down to you in the sense that I bow down to the divine presence in you.
One need not be a Hindu, or a Buddhist, or a yoga teacher to say namaste. Namaste can be as religious or secular as the speaker desires.
What matters most, I believe, is the intention behind the word namaste. When you bow to another, the question to consider is this: Do you truly recognize them as a fellow human being worthy of dignity, bonded in shared suffering and a shared capacity for transcendence?
This recognition of our interconnectedness is what namaste is all about and exactly what we need during the pandemic.
History And Origins Of Namaste
Now that we know why we use Namaste in a yoga class, where did the phrase originate? How is it used throughout the rest of the world?
Unfortunately, no one knows where the word originated though it has been used for many purposes through the years. Some believe it was used to show complete submission to another being. It was also used as a way to acknowledge respect for elders.
The Buddhists also use it to show respect for each other. The phrase is also used widely in Nepal, so you might see this gesture quite often if you happen to travel to this area of the world.
Figurines have been unearthed in India of people in Namaste posture that date back to 2000 BCE or possibly even 3000 BCE, which means the postureif not the wordhas been used for thousands of years.
In some cases, the phrase Namo vah is used instead of Namaste. The phrase has the same meaning, but the vah refers to the second person plural, so the phrase is used when three or more people are honoring the divine in each other.
It turns out other cultures have their own versions of Namaste too. The Japanese use a term Gassho when shaking hands.

What Does It Mean To Say Namaste

In India or other areas where Sanskrit is spoken, Namaste is a greeting in everyday life to simply address someone, but in yoga, it’s a more profound gesture of respect toward another person. Francesca de Luca, a certified yoga teacher in Rome, Italy, says that when you say Namaste, you connect to your divine soul. “From that ‘sacred space,’ you bow to the divine in the person in front of you,” she says.
When we talk about the divine, we aren’t referring to something religious, but to the most pure or elevated part of ourselvesto our inner light, to our spirit, de Luca explains.
Crystal McCreary, a certified yoga instructor in New York City, says that saying Namaste can be another way to bring more authenticity to yoga and help people feel more welcome in class and in the community. Namaste can often be misused as a greeting, particularly if the practitioner who is actually saying it perpetuates a harmful, culturally appropriative yogic environment that does not honor where yoga comes from, McCreary says.
Namaste In Everyday Life
Saying namaste and greeting others with the Namaskar Mudra, is actually so common in India and among the Indian diaspora, that some children often have to do it hundreds of times a day to show respect for their elders. Deepak Singh, a writer who grew up in India shared in an NPR piece that namaste was a sign that they were good children.
As non-Indian yoga practitioners, we may also practice Namaste in our everyday lives by remembering to always see ourselves reflected back at us in every person we meet. This way, we may be reminded of our interconnectedness and to always find good in others and in doing so, see goodness within ourselves at the same time.
It is not a prerequisite to have a deep spiritual practice to appreciate the significance of namaste. Even though bowing to others is a form of prostration, when practiced with the vibrations and intentions of the meaning of namaste, it is more of an homage to the pure innocence and divine we can recognize in others and in ourselves.

Namaste Vs Namaskar: Is There A Difference
Both Namaste and Namaskar are forms of greetings and showing respect with the gesture mentioned above. They both embrace the idea that deep within us lies beautiful light and spirituality.
Namaskar (in Sanskrit Namaskara is also composed in two parts:
Namaskar means similarly to Namaste I do the bowing to you.
Above all, the main difference is that with namaskar you are not saluting the divinity inside a person, but rather the Supreme Consciousness. Namaskar is seen as being more spiritual and more polite.
Another difference is that Namaste is used one on one, while Namaskar is frequently practiced when greeting multiple people.

Yogis in Western culture will often say namaste and create the gesture in everyday life as a greeting to another yogi.
For example, when you see a friend at the market or if you bump into a yogi from your classes when talking down the street, it is common to gesture and say namaste.
In Eastern culture, yogis will do this as well, but often only do the gesture, since the word namaste is already assumed.
Since yoga is still relatively new in countries like USA and Canada, it is wise to do both, since not everyone may be familiar with the gesture alone.
It can also be said and gestured during yoga classes. During public classes, students and teachers may do this at the beginning of class as a way to acknowledge each other and be friendly.
It may otherwise, or also be done after a practice to say thank you to one another for being present and focused during this shared yoga practice.
Yoga poses sometimes even have Anjali Mudra incorporated into it .
If a yoga student is taking a private class with a teacher or asks a question after a public class, it is appropriate that they do the namaste gesture representing deep respect, which we discussed in the previous section.
In modern times, yogis have also written namaste in emails.
For example, rather than writing the word, sincerely, and your name at the end of your email, you might replace sincerely with namaste when communicating with another yogi or, to hint to a new acquaintance that you are a yogi.
