Not All Teachers Say Namaste
Some yoga instructors are uncomfortable ending their classes with Namaste. Instead, they say thank you or use another similar word to signal the end of the practice. Some teachers will also ring a bell, chime, or singing bowl. Bikram yoga teachers often leave the room without saying anything. Kundalini yogis end their practice by saying the Gurmukhi mantra Sat Nam, which translates to I am truth or My essence is truth. Kripalu yoga instructors will often use Jai Bhagwan, which means may the Divine in you be victorious.

How Namaste Make You Feel
The one thing that just might be deeper than the meaning of namaste is the feeling. Yogis regularly report that sensations occur when they say namaste to themselves and others.
Some explain it as a brief meditation that gives off a strong sense of connection with another persons soul, or ones own soul.
Feelings of happiness and tranquility follow after the gesturing and speaking of namaste.
The reason for this occurring is the intense focus a yogi puts on the meaning when closing their eyes and performing namaste.
These benefits will most likely not happen when one says namaste absentmindedly.
Once you learn how to do namaste, and start using it to greet others or to spiritually connect with yourself, be sure to stay mindful during this brief meditation. This will provide you with a plethora of benefits.
How to Do the Namaste Hand Gesture
The hand gesture for namaste is called Añjali Mudr , and translated as prayer hand gesture.
To do this, you could be standing if, for instance, you greet another yogi you know on the street, or sitting if you are on your yoga mat and beginning or ending your yoga practice.
Either way, youll complete the gesture by bringing the palms of your hands together, touching the chest at the heart, all fingers will point up, and elbows can relax.
Theres no need to lift the elbows or push your palms together. It should be a light touch. Bow your head as you hold the hand gesture.
It Connects People To The Yoga Community
Every yoga class ends in Savasana, aka corpse pose, but Namaste is the true closer. For many instructors, Namaste allows them to connect to all of their students, whether they’re beginners or advanced, and offer a gesture of deep understanding toward them. For me in a yoga class, embracing the practice of Namaste is about doing my best to take my yoga students in when I greet, teach, and say goodbye to them. I try to fully see them, McCreary says.
McCreary says that Namaste is a way to strengthen an instructor’s relationship with their students and make them feel like they’re a part of the practice. A feeling of being included, an experience of their needs being considered and valued, as if their experience and their humanity is respected, and that the studio staff is committed to offering them a nourishing experience of yoga, she adds. What Does Namaste Mean
Ask most people in the yoga community to translate namaste and the common reply will be something like, The Divine in me honors the Divine in you. Its a lovely sentiment that has inspired many a yoga studio poster. But is it accurate?
Nama means bow as means I and te means you, says yoga teacher Aadil Palkhivala. Therefore, namaste literally means bow me you or I bow to you.
The Divine in you interpretation comes from the Hindu belief that God resides in everyone, so any person you greet deserves respect. The gesture is an acknowledgment of the soul in one by the soul in another, says Palkhivala, who began studying under B. K. S. Iyengar when he was a child.

Namaste Holds Spiritual And Energetic Significance
In Yogic tradition, we say that we have a subtle body where our energy lies, where we cant see it or touch it. This is where our chakras are. Chakras in Sanskrit literally translate to spinning wheel.
When we hold our hands together at our heart in Anjali Mudra, we connect to our Heart Chakra . Have you ever wondered why we end a yoga class by saying Namaste in unison to our teacher? Have you ever thought about what you are actually saying and why you might be saying it? There are so many rituals connected to yoga which for me adds to the spirituality of my practice and separates it from my other exercise.
I love ending a yoga class by saying Namaste. I find it is similar to saying Amen at the end of a prayer or Maseltov to express joy. There is deep respect inherent in this word despite our surroundingsa yoga studio, gym or even our own home. Saying Namaste gives me a sense of completion, allows me a moment of reflection without movement and bridges the transition to the day ahead of me. I like being able to acknowledge the teacher at the end of the class. I admit that sometimes I say Namaste instead of Whew! after a challenging class. And sometimes I feel silly and even a bit superficial saying a word with such reverence when Ive so little knowledge of its origin and the culture from which it came. Most of the time, however, after a particularly good class I say it and feel the essence of Yoga: a connection to myself and the greater world.
The Use Of Namaste In The West Vs India
In the Western world, I often meet people who utter Namaste with some sacred tremble. We are taught the word and gesture are a part of the ancient yogic heritage and put some spiritual significance into it, which goes far beyond thanking or paying respect to your yoga teacher.

My Indian yoga teacher Maneesh explained that the notion of respect is deeply rooted in Hindu culture.
Ancient scriptures emphasize the practice of showing equal respect and hospitality to everyone: be it the elders, family members or strangers you may have just met in the street, says Maneesh.
Greeting a person with Namaste and a bowing gesture is a way of honoring them and letting an individual know theyre welcome here. But I cant think of any connection Namaste has with yoga practice, Maneesh courteously explained his smile after me embarrassingly namaste-ing him at the end of the class.

More than ever, we need to practice Namaste when were off our mats and in the world. Reports of hate-fueled attacks, racist taunts, and assaults on places of prayer are prevalent in news outlets and social media accounts. These harms are called himsa in Sanskrit the opposite of which is Ahimsa, or no harm, and is one the foundational tenets of the Eight Limbs of Yoga. Ahimsa is one of the Niyamas, or codes to live by. Namaste Beyond The Yoga Studio
Yoga originated in India, and Tarkeshi explains that the names for all the traditional poses are sanskrit terms. But here’s the thing: If you’re a yogi newbie and your teacher is telling you what to do in sanskrit, you’re obviously going to have no idea what she’s talking about. That’s why in most classes, the teacher says the English translation for the poses, such as downward dog, happy baby, or tree pose. But the greeting of “namaste,” has remained, and honors the ancient traditions of yoga.
Tarkeshi says she hopes people will take the spirit of “namaste” beyond the studio and carry it with them through everyday life. “Obviously we aren’t going to go into the grocery store and greet people with ‘namaste,’ but greeting people as your equal and going through life treating everyone equally is a beautiful sentiment to live by,” she says. To her, “namaste” is about more than acknowledging the light in people. “It’s about honoring the light, darkness, past, present someone’s whole experience.”
