How Long Does It Take To Become A Yoga Instructor
A yoga teachers journey begins even before signing up for a teacher training course. Indeed, it is ideal to have already developed a consistent yoga practice prior to attending a 200-hour program. This way, your body will already be reasonably fit for the physical rigor, and your mind will be prepared with an idea of the asanas and what goes on during class. Is There Anything You Can Do Before A YTTC To Better Prepare Yourself?
Your first official step to becoming a certified teacher will be completing a 200-hour program. After that, if you wish to continue on and become a 500-hour RYT, you can go for a 300-hour program.
Ideally, youd be able to assist a senior yoga teacher for a few months. Learning directly from someone will definitely fast-track your path to expertise.
In short, there is no definitive timeframe whereby after x amount of time, you will become a yoga teacher. Yoga is very hands-on, and the more experience you have with itregardless of whether its with asanas, philosophy, or meditation; the better equipped you will be to teach.
Dont Quit Your Day Job
Many yogis get their RYT200 with dreams of spreading the yoga vibes near and far all day errrday. But unfortunately, yoga glow, positive energy, and karma arent quite currency in our society .
So keep your day job, and teach a class or two when you can. As you grow as a teacher, so will your roster and maybe one day you can quit that day jobjust dont do it straight away.
The Desire To Learn And Teach Yoga Outweighs Experience
So what does it take to become a yoga teacher? What are really the necessary requirements for you to possess before signing up for a yoga teacher training?
First of all, you need to have a strong desire to learn. With this important ingredient, you can overcome any obstacles in becoming a teacher. There have been many cases to show this. For example, students who hardly speak English and completing their training with high marks. Another example is a student arriving to her training in crutches and finishing her training as an excellent teacher. You can do anything as long as you set your mind to it. This desire is also closely linked to your attitude. Often the less experienced yogis are the disciplined ones. They achieve the most growth and show the best results in their teacher trainings. Even a seasoned yogi is usually a beginner in teaching. This makes the teacher training challenging for anyone.

Keeping Up With Your Daily Practice
This is the most valuable tip for becoming a yoga instructor. If you were to only take one thing away from this article, let it be this.;
Keeping up with your own personal connection to yoga, is the best thing to do if you want to be a quality teacher. Know how certain poses feel on your body. What specific sensations make you feel. What cues help you unfold and breath.;
Once you have isolated things that give you permission to ground, you will be able to guide others.
Value Your Day Jobor Its Skills
Toward the end of my teacher training, Rodney Yee made one of his outlandish blanket remarks, which Ive always appreciated for their candor. He said, You need to realize that this two-year teacher training may have just trained you to stand in line at the soup kitchen. He was affirmative in other ways, but he was honest about the difficulty of making it as a full-time teacher. Teaching yoga is an extremely new profession, and we dont have much historical data that leads us to say, Yes, I expect it to follow such-and-such a cycle. So your guess is as good as mine about the long-term possibility of living the lifestyle that you want to live as a yoga teacher.
For now, then, lets think outside the mat and consider what other yoga-affiliated income sources exist. If you have writing skills, you may be able to put them to work writing for any number of magazines. More and more publications are turning to journalists to write their yoga articles, but if you have good skills and experience, consider pitching a story or two to any magazine that features yoga. Ive seen yoga articles not just in Yoga Journal but in publications from Cosmopolitan to Martha Stewart Living to Cooking Light. So be creative and see where your writing experience may lead you.

What Are The Different Yoga Styles
One of the most important parts of being a yoga teacher is finding a teaching style that is right for you hatha, kripalu, vinyasa, bikram yoga, tantra, yin and restorative yoga- etc.
With so many different types of yoga circulating around the world, we recommend trying out a variety of styles before deciding which one is your favorite.
Since yoga is our jam, here is a breakdown of a few of the most well-known teaching styles:
Should You Do A Yoga Teacher Training
Have you ever heard people say their yoga training changed their life, but they couldnt really tell you how? ;I have. And those people almost prevented me from completing my own training. I know youre like me too; you want to do a teacher training, but youre not sure. ;I want to share my story with you and give you concrete examples of how my life was forever changed by doing a 200-hour yoga teacher training. ;
When I started this journey, I wasnt exactly sure if I would actually teach yoga. To be honest, Ive done other teacher trainings and didnt stay committed to teaching. ;I couldnt help but think, will yoga be like all the others? I knew I loved yoga and wanted to know more about it, but I didnt see myself as a yoga teacher. Have you ever felt like that? ;Like you didnt trust yourself to actually use that thing you say you want?
What usually happens is we just dont do it. If we think we cant justify it with something logical other than you just want to, we tend to opt not to do the things we want to do. Or we opt out because we let the fear of failure hold us back. Taking a yoga teacher training did not seem like a logical next step. But I decided to do what I wanted to do instead of what I thought I should do. I have no regrets and I actually gained more than I expected. ;
The untrained mind is restless, constantly wandering here and there trying to fulfill its desires.

Is Online Yoga Teacher Training Worth It
This totally depends on the training courses that youre looking at and who the lead trainers are. Some yoga companies are just churning out training courses without offering much hands-on experience, personalized guidance from the trainers, or even quality education. These kinds of training courses are often sold for less than $500 and are more for those interested in a quick and dirty pseudo yoga teacher certificate than for those who are genuinely interested in learning the history of yoga, proper asana technique, teaching methodology from an experienced yoga instructor, or pranayama breathing techniques.
My online teacher training program, for example, provides TONS of hands-on experience through live Zoom calls and opportunities for teaching experience. I offer quality pre-recorded lessons on human anatomy, pranayama breathing, teaching methodology, and alignment and THEN we come together to discuss it all. In an online program like mine, you get teaching experience and quality feedback from an experienced yoga instructor , which is quite uncommon for most online programs.
How Much Does A Teacher Training Cost
Your average yoga teacher training course will cost upward of $3,000, depending on location and whats included with the program.
Its an investment, which is why doing your research is so important.
Many programs require a down payment to hold your spot and offer payment plans or even scholarships for students with a variety of life circumstances. But rest assured, there are plenty of affordable YTTs for those of us with a tighter budget.

Start A Certification Folder
Most Teacher Training Programs issue a certificate to you upon graduation to show that you completed the program successfully. When you get the certificate, you should make a few colour copies and get them laminated. You should then start a certificate folder to hold your certificates, a list of your completed classes, your grades, attendance records and any other documents that show that you completed your trainings.
It would be helpful to have these key documents in one place, especially as you take more trainings over the years. You will find it particularly handy to have all that information in one place when applying for teaching positions.;
How To Maintain Your Yoga Teacher Training Accreditation
Yoga certifications dont expire.;
That being said, many people find it helpful to go back and take another yoga teacher training, if its been a while since your last one. It can be helpful to refresh your knowledge and skills.;
It is highly recommended to keep taking classes, long after your yoga teacher training. Every teacher has tools and tricks in their language and teaching that can cultivate your teaching abilities. Use the things you like from certain teachers, and leave the rest.;

What Is The Best Yoga Certification To Get
Yoga Alliance is the most well-known private organization that provides yoga instructor certification, but a YA certification doesnt mean that you received quality training or that you are ready to teach yoga. Of course, it is nice to be able to join the trend of having a YA certification to ensure that you dont miss any opportunities that are tied to this kind of certification, but outside of your local yoga studio, not many others will be asking for a YA certification.

When you start showing up for a few months, the teachers and staff will get to know you and its much more likely youll be considered for job openings when they come. If youre trying to land a teaching job, resist the temptation early on to float from studio to studio. Stay grounded in one, and youll begin to develop a community faster.
Dont hesitate to schmooze

What To Look For In A Yoga Teacher Training Course
I was warned by a close friend who is a practiced yoga teacher to be careful when picking a YTT course, as she advised me that not all are created equal. So before I made a payment I had her look over what was offered in the course that I did at Odyssey MVMT and she let me know she thought it was a well-rounded course that would give me all I needed to be certified at a high level.
But for those of you who are interested in a YTT course and dont have such a friend to look over things for you, here are a few key things you should keep in mind before booking:
You Do Youyoure The Only One That Can
This is probably something you heard at teacher training, but its super important to remember! When I first started teaching, my boss/mentor told me before my first class to teach what I know in my heart and to just be me.
It sounds so simple but she made me realize that I couldnt be her, or any other amazing yoga teacher that Ive had in my life. I could only be me. This is common for new yoga teachers. So just do youyoure the only one that can.
Know that you can do it, and that you are prepared, but that it will take time to build the teaching practice of your dreams. What important lessons did you learn when trying to find your first yoga teaching gig? Wed love to hear from you in the comments below!

It Will Be Months Before Your First Class Is Full
If you build it, they will come. Thats the saying, right? You may have landed your first class, but where are the students?
It will take a while before you have full classes. Depending on the venue, you may only have a handful of students each class. Try not to take it as an indication of your teaching. Always be open to feedback and change things up until you find something that brings in your regulars and then eventually, maybe a few newbies.
Starting Your Yoga Learning Beginner Pointers
Joining a yoga school without understanding the basics often leads to disappointment. Yoga teacher training certification familiarizes students with yoga history, best practices, yoga modifications, and guiding principles. However, one or 2 months of guided classes can only teach you so much.
People who are passionate about yoga spend some time understanding the ancient art and self-practicing before joining a professional yoga course. Here are some beginner points to help you get started with your yoga journey. These will also help you answer the question how long does it take to become a yoga instructor on your own:
Learn yoga history & theory: Aspiring yoga teachers immerse themselves in learning of yoga history and philosophy before joining a professional course since it gives them a base to stand upon in classes. Going through yoga books will also familiarize you with its depth.
Speak with teachers: Meeting yoga teachers and long term practitioners greatly helps in giving more perspective about yoga and help learn which form or style will suit you the best. Participating in some demo sessions is also a great way to learn how classes unfold.
Watch yoga videos: While complex yoga postures and modifications ought to be practiced under the watchful eye of a trainer practitioner, basic yoga asanas like Pranayama can be learn by watching videos. So, dedicate some time to go through digital yoga content.

How Long To Become A Yoga Instructor
If youre excited to start your career as yoga teacher, the cheap or even free online courses that claim you can be qualified in as little as 6 hours can be super tempting.
But, if youre serious about starting your own yoga business or getting any kind of job as a yoga professional, these courses are not as a good a deal as they first seem.
In order to work as a yoga professional and get yoga teacher insurance, you will need to study a qualification that is regulated by an Ofqual approved awarding body.
That means, looking out for some of these logos on the course providers website:
Ofqual regulation ensures that all vocational courses, qualifications, and exams, meet a set standard of criteria, so that regardless of the course provider that they study with, all qualified yoga instructors have the same level of knowledge.
In order to have this regulated status, course providers have to pay a fee to the awarding body, which is usually at least £50-£70 for every student.
As you can probably see, this fee alone is already more than the cost of some of the cheap courses out there, so it’s fair to assume that these courses are unregulated and therefore wont truly qualify you to work as a professional yoga instructor.
Not only that, because regulated courses need to cover certain topics its pretty much impossible that all of this content would be covered in a free course which can be completed in 6 hours.;
