The Four Great Types Of Yoga

In ancient times, a spiritual aspirant would choose the branch of Yoga that best aligned with his temperament and nature, according to personal qualities that were already prevalent in him as well as usually the advice of a competent guru.

In effect, his efforts had a degree of leverage and progress came as if by a kind of grace. It was as though there was already wind in his sails, so to speak, because the chosen path fostered his strengths and his strengths propelled him along his path expeditiously.

In the same way as a person would not choose to invest time and energy in learning how to play a musical instrument if she disliked music, a yogi would be wise not to choose a yogic path that contradicted his natural disposition.

Therefore, both;self-reflection and self-analysis;are vital steps in choosing which branch of Yoga to pursue for spiritual gains.

Are you a person of action? Perhaps you are more emotional by nature and chiefly motivated by the call of your heart? There exists a yogic path that can facilitate your advancement and evolution, according to your primal inclination or inspiration.

Raja Yoga is the most favored path, with an estimated 70 percent of spiritual seekers following this tradition today. Jnana Yoga has unfortunately declined by comparison and only appeals to perhaps 5 percent of modern spiritual aspirants, while Karma Yoga and Bhakti Yoga interest one out of every 10.

The S.U.P. community is a worldwide organization that encourages yoga on the water, with a paddleboard in place of a conventional mat. It can be practiced on any body of water from a small pond to a vast ocean.

Unlike practicing on solid ground, the paddleboard student will suddenly notice if they are exerting too much force through one side of the body more than the other, as the board will react to their movements and potentially throw them out of balance. Yet, as with most yoga practices, paddleboard yoga increases stability, flexibility, and core strength while rejuvenating mind and spirit.

What Exactly Is Yoga Anyway

The physical practice of yoga takes many forms but what factors make them all yoga?

Whether its a power flow class, a prenatal yoga class, or a Yin class, all of them go for creating a connection between your mind, your body, and your breath, says Sarah Burns, a Memphis-based E-RYT 200 yoga instructor. Theres also a big emphasis on being present on your mat and making space for anything youre feeling in your physical and emotional space.

To view yoga as a whole, consider that its ultimately about breath work related to physical postures , says Kate DeSisto, a CYT-250 yoga instructor with additional certifications in aerial and SUP yoga. Everything is based on breathing. Youre going to move with a breath.

The structure of all yoga types is similar as well. Most classes you walk into will usually have a warmup, often based around sun salutations, then youll work toward some sort of focus posture or focus flow, and then youll have a cooldown, explains DeSisto.

Ashtanga Yoga And Power Yoga

Ashtanga means “eight limbs”; in contemporary hatha circles, it also refers to a style of yoga practice introduced by Pattabhi Jois. This dynamic form of hatha yoga involves vigorous flow from posture to posture. More specifically, Ashtanga practice today involves six series, or set combinations of postures, in which practitioners move from one posture to the next without stopping. Generally, however, only the primary series and the second series are taught in class settings because the remaining four series are quite physically demanding. In fact, those four can be practiced only by persons who have spent considerable time learning and accomplishing them.

Ashtanga yoga was rediscovered in the twentieth century when Pattabhi Jois and his teacher, Sri Krishnamacharya, translated a practice they found outlined in an ancient text called the Yoga Korunta. Krishnamacharya found the manuscript written on leaves in a form of Sanskrit used 5,000 years ago; according to interpreters, the estimated date of its transcription is at least 1,500 years ago. Pattabhi Jois named the practice Ashtanga, based on the second Pada of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. In the pada, the term ashta-anga are outlined and the Pattabhi Jois believed the integration of the eight limbs were steps to gradually awaken to Samadhi .
