Become A Yoga Instructor On Your Time
The amount of time it takes for you to become a yoga instructor will depend on your current commitments and lifestyle. If you are able to commit to two to four weeks of daily training, an immersion program may be the best fit for you. In that case, you will be certified and ready to look for your first job within a month. For those who need to balance their work or home life with training, a longer period of study may be a better option. Just make sure to do your research. Programs vary in the depth of material they cover, as well as teaching style and philosophy. Find the one that works for you.
Choose A Teacher Training Program
Number three, you definitely wanna do some kind of training.
Yes, you want to do a yoga teacher training, and the most common format is to do whats called a 200-hour teacher training.
So you cover a lot of material in 200 hours, everything from teaching, anatomy, philosophy. You wanna do research on where you do this 200-hour training, because its really gonna teach you everything you need to know about how to be a successful teacher.
While most yoga studios will focus on vinyasa yoga or vinyasa flow in their certification program, you can totally choose a yoga instructor training that focuses on the yoga and meditation style that most interests you. There are many types of yoga, from restorative yoga, prenatal yoga, yoga nidra, Ashtanga yoga, to yin yoga, you definitely have a lot to choose from.
You can do a 200-hour training all at once, in a month-long in-person intensive, over the course of many weekends, or you can even do a 200-hour training online. There are a lot of different types of training depending on the style of yoga, like:
If you do do something online, make sure that its interactive, and youre getting direct feedback and support from a teacher over video conference.
Thats exactly how my online training works, and if youre interested in the online option, Ill also link that up in the cards and description.

How Long Does It Take To Become A Yoga Instructor
A yoga teachers journey begins even before signing up for a teacher training course. Indeed, it is ideal to have already developed a consistent yoga practice prior to attending a 200-hour program. This way, your body will already be reasonably fit for the physical rigor, and your mind will be prepared with an idea of the asanas and what goes on during class. Is There Anything You Can Do Before A YTTC To Better Prepare Yourself?
Your first official step to becoming a certified teacher will be completing a 200-hour program. After that, if you wish to continue on and become a 500-hour RYT, you can go for a 300-hour program.
Ideally, youd be able to assist a senior yoga teacher for a few months. Learning directly from someone will definitely fast-track your path to expertise.
In short, there is no definitive timeframe whereby after x amount of time, you will become a yoga teacher. Yoga is very hands-on, and the more experience you have with itregardless of whether its with asanas, philosophy, or meditation the better equipped you will be to teach.

Understanding Yoga Certification And The Yoga Alliance
The first thing to know about becoming a yoga teacher is that youll likely need to interact with the Yoga Alliance.
What is the Yoga Alliance?
The Yoga Alliance is a non-profit organization based in the United States and headquartered in Arlington, Virginia. It acts as a trade organization for professionals in the yoga industry. Namely, it certifies instructors and keeps track of which yoga teacher programs are certified as Registered Yoga Schools or RYSs.
To participate in yoga instructor training to become certified by the Yoga Alliance, you must attend a yoga teacher training program at an RYS. Once you complete one of these programs, you will be considered an RYT .
There are several different types of yoga teacher training courses also known as YTTCs. Here, well mention only the main two: the 200 YTT and the 500 YTT (500-hour yoga teacher training. For many, the 200 YTT is like the bachelors degree of teacher training while the 500 YTT is like the bachelors and masters degree of teacher training. Choose your training program according to your teaching goals and how much time you have to devote to your studies to become a certified yoga instructor.
Working As An Instructor In A Pilates Studio
While you might want to go it alone from the get-go, perhaps its best to first find your feet by working in a studio environment. Although your certification would have included many hours of practicals, expanding your Pilates knowledge in a studio with other like-minded instructors is the perfect setup for new Pilates teachers.
Just think about it, larger studios will often employ a number of teachers, with perhaps all of them having far more experience than you might. These are the people to watch and learn from, thats for sure. There is just so much knowledge to be gained in a situation like that.

How Do I Find A Job As An Instructor
Many fitness facilities and community centers will hire newly certified yoga instructors, but just e-mailing your resumé is usually not enough to get yourself on the group fitness schedule. Visit local centers and chat with the front-desk staff about the group fitness program. Buy a guest pass and take a class to better understand the population at each center. You may be asked to teach a demonstration class, and its important to think beforehand about what level and style of class will suit the centers participants.
Once you have a feel for a facility, find out who the group fitness director is, and ask to meet briefly with him or her. Inquire about adding your name to the sublist. If the director agrees, ask for permission to observe or take a few classes so you can offer a great experience when your time comes to teach.
New instructors can also propose a series of yoga classes to organizations and communities where they are already involved. For example, you could start a lunchtime class in your workplace, offer an afterschool class to teachers at your kids school or launch a yoga group at your church. Dance studios and martial arts centers may also be interested in adding a yoga class to their schedules, for either kids or parents. In these venues, extensive teaching experience will matter less than the fact that you are part of the community.

Can I Make A Living Teaching Yoga
It is possible to make a living as a yoga instructor, but most successful instructors need to supplement their income from group classes with more lucrative workshops, retreats and private instruction.
Rates and methods of pay for yoga instructors range widely. The 2008 IDEA Fitness Industry Compensation Survey, published by IDEA Health & Fitness Association, found that 63% of instructors were paid by the class, 32% by the hour and 22% by the number of participants just 2% were paid a salary. The average rate of pay per hour or class was $32.25, with for-profit companies generally paying close to $35 and nonprofit organizations offering about $10 less .
If you teach in a yoga studio or rent a space to teach, you will likely be paid by the number of students you have. For example, a studio may offer a $20 base pay per 90-minute class, plus $2$5 per student. So with 20 students, youd earn $60$120. If you rent a space, you will keep whatever you charge minus the rental fee. Both of these arrangements have big-money potential if you can pack a room, but your pay will be dismal if only a few students turn up.
Studios and facilities will expect you to market your classes to build the numbers. You can promote yourself effectively through traditional means or new social media but know that you wont be able to spend all your time designing brilliant lesson plans and music playlists.
Do You Have The Right Body
Truth time: to become a yoga instructor, do you have to be a size zero who can turn yourself into a pretzel upon command?
The answer is an unequivocal no, according to the teachers I spoke to.
There is absolutely nothing physical or body-related to being a yoga teacher, says Dave Ursillo.
Great yoga teachers excel at holding space for students, creating nurturing environments for one and all, and sharing the gift of yoga with presence and humility.
Lindsay Hogg, who teaches yoga in Canada, agrees: I am not a typical body type at all Im sure some people judge me sometimes, but then they take my class and it rocks.

What Are The Different Yoga Styles
One of the most important parts of being a yoga teacher is finding a teaching style that is right for you hatha, kripalu, vinyasa, bikram yoga, tantra, yin and restorative yoga- etc.
With so many different types of yoga circulating around the world, we recommend trying out a variety of styles before deciding which one is your favorite.
Since yoga is our jam, here is a breakdown of a few of the most well-known teaching styles:
Time Spent In Training
There are hundreds of yoga teacher training programs around the world to choose from. They take place in the form of total immersions, which last from 14 to 30 consecutive days, and yoga school or college programs, which take from three months to a year to complete. While they each offer different benefits, to meet the standards of the yoga alliance, the breakdown of training is the same.

- 30 hours of Philosophy, Lifestyle, and Ethics – including a discussion of history, as well as spiritual principles surrounding the practice of yoga in religious as well as secular communities.
- 100 hours of Training and Practice – which involves some combination of practice in asana, meditation, and rituals, along with teaching techniques.

The Desire To Learn And Teach Yoga Outweighs Experience
So what does it take to become a yoga teacher? What are really the necessary requirements for you to possess before signing up for a yoga teacher training?
First of all, you need to have a strong desire to learn. With this important ingredient, you can overcome any obstacles in becoming a teacher. There have been many cases to show this. For example, students who hardly speak English and completing their training with high marks. Another example is a student arriving to her training in crutches and finishing her training as an excellent teacher. You can do anything as long as you set your mind to it. This desire is also closely linked to your attitude. Often the less experienced yogis are the disciplined ones. They achieve the most growth and show the best results in their teacher trainings. Even a seasoned yogi is usually a beginner in teaching. This makes the teacher training challenging for anyone.
Are Natural Disasters A Threat In Bali
Volcanic activity and earthquakes can affect Bali, it’s recommended to keep an eye on travel warnings and avoid traveling to areas of high risk. All Yoga will never knowingly put students at risk, and will always inform students if areas become unsafe to travel. In these cases a full refund will be given, or the option to postpone of change location of the training.

The Reason Behind Why I Did Yoga Teacher Training
When I first got the idea to become a yoga teacher I wanted to do the training because I thought it was cool . Being a yoga teacher was trendy and I loved the idea of being super flexible and bending into awkward poses. Really I just wanted to be a yoga teacher so I could show off.
That was completely the wrong reason to want to go into yoga training but overtime my reasoning for wanting to give it a go changed. As I became more spiritual I realized that the philosophy of yoga had deep roots and that it was the philosophy and reasoning behind why people practice that actually interested me more than the health benefits of yoga .
My interest in yoga philosophy then developed into wanting to expand my practice, to deepen my knowledge of yoga as a whole. This is when I decided to start actually looking for a yoga instructor course.
I never wanted to do a YTT course in order to become a yoga teacher, though I did love the idea of having that skill in my back pocket. Instead, I used YTT as a way to not only deepen my practice but to prove to myself that I could be really good at something physical despite my weight, as Im overweight, and to prove to others that being a yoga teacher doesnt mean you have to be extremely fit or tiny or really bendy to do so.
This new found reason for wanting to do YTT suddenly wasnt just about me but about sharing the knowledge Id learn with others, even if I wasnt going to be a yoga teacher.
