A Journey Into Yin Yoga

BOOK REVIEW: A Journey into Yin Yoga,
Review by Michelle Pietrzak-Wegner
This new addition to the Yin Yoga literature is a well-designed manual for approaching this quiet practicea possible antidote to our fast-paced, yang-oriented lives . In just 227 pages, Los Angelesbased instructor Travis Eliot provides a comprehensive overview of the system of yoga alongside the origins and practice of the Yin Yoga style. Nearly 80 of those well-organized pages are filled with beautiful photographs illustrating each posture accompanied by clear, concise instruction. Setting this Yin Yoga text apart from others are the personal journeys of six individuals who offer their perspectives on the style: Practitioners from well-known yogi Bryan Kest to hip-hop artist Stic share struggles and discoveries from their own yin practices. The book ends with suggested Yang Yoga sequences and 10 yin sequences on varying themes.
In the end, this book is a resource for those wanting to slow down and incorporate more yin qualities into their personal practices.
Michelle Pietrzak-Wegner, C-IAYT, E-RYT 500, is a Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapist, Yin Yoga training facilitator, and graduate student in clinical counseling. She offers yoga programs in Asia and the United States.

Heather’s Approach To Teaching Yin Yoga

Each class begins with a few minutes of awareness to just ‘be’ with your breath, giving you time and space to settle into your body and let go of lifes distractions. By quieting the chaos between the ears, you can quickly transition from the external to the internal.
Heather plans each class sequence with a specific intention, supported by a set of linked postures. Thoughtfully selected music and essential oils are incorporated throughout the class to create the ultimate mind/body experience. Linking poses allows for mindful transitions and ease from effort during the practice. Slow, intentional, intuitive movement is layered on to prepare the body for a combination of active and passive holds. This movement subtly warms the hold area, supporting each student as they mindfully surrender into the posture with ease. Props such as bolsters and blocks may be used to support areas of the body that require more care. Heather integrates guided breathwork throughout the class to keep students present and at times, distracted from the intended sensation of the pose. Moments of stillness are offered to allow the body to rebound before each counter-pose begins.

Here Are Some Other Important Reasons To Add Yin To Your Classes And Practice:
A balanced practise
As yogis its vital to have a balanced practise, we need both the yin and yang elements of the practice to feel whole and healthy.
The yang part of our practise is about our strength, stamina and flow. With rounds of sun salutations and more dynamic advanced poses these practises such as vinyasa, ashtanga and the 26+2 series work more on the muscles, blood and skin.
Relative to this the yin part hydrates the fascia and connective tissue allowing a deeper range of movement.
Many of us tend to prefer one style to the other, however both are important in maintaining a balance. When you combine these practises you start to find more peace and balance in the mind and the body, your spiritual practice will deepen and you will feel a greater sense of connection to yourself.
2. The doorway to meditation for your students
The Yin practise sets you up for meditation. When we create opportunity for physical stillness we also create the perfect condition for the mind to become still.
Due to length of posture and the focus on the breath the mind becomes stiller, the more gentle the practise the easier it is to tap into the meditative state. If meditation is challenging for you and or your students the practise of yin is a great way to ease into it.
A Yin practice literally cleanses the mind, allowing us to play with our edge in a gentle and loving way whilst taking time out from the mental chitter chatter that occupies most of our waking state.
