Self Care And Community Impact

We Rise offers trauma-certified yoga course training

As we explore this material together it is very important to take care of yourself.

Seeking to understand pain, and its potential to become a positive and transformative power, is an admiral pursuit. Youve chosen to explore an area of humanity that is often rejected and avoided. Sadly, this is why so many people continue to act from a place of pain, rather then having the courage, and know how, to face it. You have to feel it to heal it, is a common expression these days in the science of PTSD recovery. Your pain is your teacher, and it has the capacity to incite growth and harmony, not just in your own life, but in all of your relationships.

There is an overwhelming correlation between PTSD and substance abuse, violence and other crime, depression, anxiety, self harm and suicide. Imagine what the world would look like if each person had an opportunity to process their sorrow, their anger, and their fear? Prisons would be less populated, drug use would diminish, family life would improve, and communities would come together.

No one on Earth is outside of the field of trauma. Whether you have experienced a traumatic experience yourself, you are close to someone who is suffering or you are part of a community that is in pain, pain is not contained it radiates out, and we all feel the effects. Each person has their own work to do, no one can look at the light of the moon for you. And this you know, and thats why you are reading this.

Who Are The Clients

Trauma-informed yoga classes most commonly serve populations of veterans, inmates, those in treatment or rehabilitation centers, and women in shelters receiving domestic violence support.

These classes usually involve the teacher leading sessions in facilities where it is apparent that the clients may have trauma in their past. But it is important to note that outside of these contexts, it is not necessarily possible to identify a client with trauma.

Many think trauma comes from a singular traumatic event, but there is also developmental trauma and complex trauma that include exposure to many traumatic experiences over a period of time.

This means trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder can also come from emotional abuse, neglect, and the ways in which skin color, ethnicity, or cultural background can detrimentally impact a persons relationship with their body, their community, and their sense of self as seen in the systemic patterns of trauma in marginalized groups.

While there may be some trauma symptoms you could identify as a yoga instructor, you likely wont know which of your students is a trauma survivor.

So since a trauma survivor can look like you, me, or anyone at your local yoga studio, anyone is potentially a trauma-informed yoga client, which explains the tenet of trauma-informed yoga to teach as though everyone in class is a trauma survivor.

What Is Trauma Informed Yoga Therapy

Yoga practitioners pioneered trauma-informed yoga therapy to allow yoga clients to feel comfortable in their bodies, tackle ruminating over their trauma and improved their self-regulation. This type of yoga can heal and empower people who have experienced trauma and lead better lives. It is a specialized yoga. You shouldnt just jump into it, but study and perhaps take a certification course before working with people affected by trauma.

As we said above, research has shown that trauma can cause people to suffer hypervigilance, hyperarousal and lack of ability to feel calm. Its not just their minds that suffer, but their bodies as well. Trauma-informed yoga will allow people to understand the physical changes happening in their body because of their traumatic experiences, and help them release tension, decrease fear and learn to manage sensation. The practice will empower people, letting them live more in control of their own lives. For instance, a yoga teacher may ask the student: If youd like to, raise your arms, instead of ordering them to raise their arms. The student will be completely in control of their own body.

If youre questioning whether trauma-informed yoga actually works, the National Institutes of Health has conducted a study finding that individuals with complex trauma who practice yoga show a marked improvement.

Where To Get Your Trauma

There are many trauma-sensitive yoga courses out there to choose from these days.

Look for those led by a yogi who is also a psychologist, psychotherapist, social worker, yoga therapist, or mental health provider that has experience implementing this style of yoga with trauma survivors and people with post-traumatic stress disorder .

Yoga therapy schools are also a good place to look as the facilitators are generally experienced in the therapeutic application of yoga. Yoga therapy programs commonly offer trauma-informed yoga therapy modules that dont require you to be enrolled in their full yoga therapy program or to be in yoga therapist training to attend.

Another great option for trauma-informed yoga training includes organizations that serve veteran and incarcerated populations. Often the curriculums have been honed and the lead trainers have many hours of putting the principles into practice. Even if you arent interested in teaching yoga to these populations, you could still benefit from their years of refining and practically applying their trauma-sensitive yoga program.

What Is Trauma Informed Yoga And Should I Get Certified

200 hrs Therapeutic Trauma

While most of us in the yoga community have heard of trauma informed yoga, I find many are unclear about what a trauma informed yoga practice actually is, how to train in this type of yoga, and whether theres evidence to support it.

So Id love to shed some light on this subject as I am passionate about spreading knowledge on significant yoga topics so that teachers can make the best, most informed decisions for themselves and their students.

Trauma takes many forms. Active duty military personnel can be victims of all sorts of trauma, from violence on the battlefield to sexual trauma. And the effects of those traumas can be carried with them for a lifetime, negatively affecting sleep, causing depression and anxiety, and causing sufferers to not feel at home in their own bodies.

Childhood trauma can come from physical or sexual abuse, neglect, bullying, and a host of other negative events. And, when children experience trauma, they dont have the skills to process the trauma or even ask for help in dealing with issues.

Adults can experience trauma from a sudden death of a loved one, a relationship breakup, humiliation, disappointment, violence or injuries.

Due to the rise of distressing world events, trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder have become international buzzwords. Growing evidence shows that the imprints of traumatic events remain lodged in the body and brain, and that somatic awareness practices are essential for complete trauma recovery. Modern findings in neuroscience support these notions and have paved the way for yoga and meditation to find their rightful place as bona fide adjunctive therapies in treating traumatic stress.

Inspired by the wisdom teachings of the Bhagavad Gita and the triumphant story of Ganesha, this training helps reframe the negative effects of trauma from victimhood and suffering into an opportunity to yoke with ourselves. As we unpack the pranic implications of holding trauma in the body, we will discover that the unwinding or thawing of this frozen potential allows greater possibilities for stability, healing and vitality to emerge.

This 50 hour module will include explorations in:
