The Bottom Line
It turned out that the Yoga really was the one hybrid to rule them all, and every other major PC maker, including Dell, HP, Toshiba and others, experimented with all sorts of flipping, folding, rotating, and shifting hybrid PC design before settling on a similar 360-degree hinge. Today, you can’t even casually browse a computer store without tripping over Windows PC with kiosk and table tent modes.
Lenovo went on to make several variations on the Yoga, including different screen sizes, different colors and higher-end models with watchband-style hinges. But the overall best Yoga design the company produced was the ThinkPad Yoga. This variant, part of the buttoned-down ThinkPad line of business computers, kept the best parts of the transforming Yoga experience, but also added a clever keyboard trick.
When the hinge rotates from its clamshell position all the way to its tablet position, the keyboard tucks itself away inside the base. It looks and feels like a retractable keyboard, but in reality, the outer edge of the keyboard tray raises up slightly to be flush with the keys, which are in turn locked into position. But the end effect is the same, so feel free to keep calling it a retractable keyboard. It’s a great feature missing from the standard IdeaPad Yoga systems, which leave a deactivated keyboard clacking under your fingers when in tablet mode.

Gaming And Movie Nights Profile
Weve also measured how well the display is able to reproduce really dark parts of an image. Its essential when watching movies or playing games. The left side of the image represents the display with stock settings while the right one with our custom profile for gaming and multimedia. On the horizontal axis, you will find the grayscale and on the vertical axis the luminance of the display. The display offers good visibility in dark areas of an image but its further improved by installing our profile.
We illustrate the first five levels of the gray , right after black level, using the five boxes on the image below. Keep in mind that whether you can distinguish them or not strongly depends on the settings of your current display, the calibration, the viewing angle and the surrounding light conditions.
Lenovo Updates Thinkpad Laptops With Windows 10 Signature Edition Intel Optane Storage Tech
The company’s flagship notebooks will also feature Intel’s latest Kaby Lake processors, support for Microsoft’s Precision TouchPad drivers, and even a silver color option.
Lenovo has jumped the gun on CES by releasing info on its latest ThinkPad updates a few days before the annual electronics trade show. While the PC manufacturer isn’t adding anything as radical as the Yoga Book’s Create Pad hybrid input device, its flagship laptops will receive some of the latest computing technology as well as some other improvements.

Do I Really Need To Replace It
While my wear levels were nowhere near 60%, losing more than fifth of your battery life starts to be felt when using the computer without AC power. I was also suspicious about the quality of these first batch of batteries based on the issues described above. And finally, I have a mild OCD when it comes to computers and them being not perfect

Best Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Yoga Docking Station In 2022
BestLenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga Docking StationWindows Central2022
Laptops and tablet hybrids like the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga are awesome, but docking stations can allow you to blow up their displays on a larger monitor and also add more ports for peripherals, which can increase productivity in the home environment significantly. There are tons of docking stations out on the market, and all of them offer basics such as ethernet ports and audio jacks, but some docks are better than others based on how many USB ports they offer, how well they support external displays, and whether or not they can charge your device. Out of all the docks available, we think the best overall one is the CalDigit TS3 Plus because of its incredible selection of ports, ability to be connected with up to two 4K displays, and powerful charging.

Modern And Legacy Ports
The X1 Yoga features two USB-C ports with Thunderbolt 3 technology on the left side of the laptop, giving you one port free while using the included USB-C AC adapter. It’s also compatible with third-party chargers for example, we were able to use the one from the Apple MacBook Pro . It can also support dual external displays with up to 4K resolution. In addition to the USB-C connectivity, there are two USB 3.0 ports on the left side, ready for legacy peripherals like older hard drives and the charger for your phone. On the right are a headset jack, an HDMI port, a jack for the included mini Ethernet dongle, a Kensington lock port, and a third USB 3.0 port. 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.1 handle wireless networks. Under a door on the back panel is a microSD card slot and a SIM slot for the optional WWAN modem. Unfortunately, we didn’t have one on our tester.
The 720p HD webcam is centrally located above the display, and it automatically focuses on your face for web conferences and the like. The speakers are embedded in the bottom panel, aimed to the left and right. Voices came through loud and clear during our hands-on testing, and though there wasn’t a lot of bass, music and sound effects from movie trailers were clearly audible. A fingerprint reader is on the right side palm rest, and it works with Windows Hello for one-touch login.
Best For Multiple Displays: Dell D6000
If you want to use more than two monitors, this dock shouldn’t be overlooked. Unlike every other option on this list, it’s capable of supporting three 4K displays at once. Two of them can be 60 Hz, but the third will have to be 30Hz. On top of that, the dock also comes with four USB-A 3.0 ports as well as a single USB-C, and the device supports 65W charging. Going with the Dell D6000 means missing out on Thunderbolt 3 and the incredible number of ports that a dock like the CalDigit TS3 Plus offers, but if you want to save some money or just want to use more than two displays, this is the dock to go with.

Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Yoga Gen 6 Specs
- Model: 20XY002PUS
- 14-inch 1920 x 1200 IPS anti-glare touchscreen, 400 nits
- 720p HD camera
- 12.28 x 8.78 x 0.59 inches , 3lbs
- Two Thunderbolt 4 Type-C , one USB 3.2 Gen 1, one 3.5 mm headphone / mic combo audio jack, one HDMI 2.0
- Match-on-chip fingerprint reader
- Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201 11ax, Bluetooth 5.2
And then there are a number of updated security features, which Lenovo has drizzled across the ThinkPad line. Theres an optional IR webcam with human-presence detection which can automatically lock the computer if youre not nearby , a match-on-chip fingerprint reader in the power button, a dTPM 2.0 security chip , and an optional feature called Privacy Guard which makes your screen harder to peek at from the sides.
But the most noticeable update is to the look. While the Gen 5s chassis had some gray on it, the Gen 6 is gray everywhere, including the keyboard, touchpad, and hinge. This means that the Yoga looks a bit different from the sea of other ThinkPads out there, which are traditionally very black. It gives the X1 Yoga more of a futuristic vibe than devices like the X1 Carbon and the X13, though red and gray arent nearly as striking as red and black.

Looks Like A Thinkpad
The X1 Yoga has Lenovo’s familiar soft-touch dark-gray finish, which tends to pick up fingerprints easily. You’ll need to keep a terry or microfiber cloth handy to wipe finger oils off the exterior and the screen. It’s a very corporate look compared with the bright-silver HP EliteBook x360 1030 G2, our latest top pick for business convertibles. The laptop measures 0.69 by 13.1 by 9.0 and weighs 3.09 pounds. It should fit comfortably in a standard laptop case and is light enough to carry around from meeting to meeting. It’s larger in every dimension and heavier than the EliteBook x360, but we can attribute that to its larger screen. Last year’s lighter ThinkPad X1 Yoga was slightly thicker, but with the same length and width.
As a 2-in-1 convertible laptop, the ThinkPad X1 Yoga’s screen can pivot 360 degrees on its dual hinges, allowing you to use the touch screen in four modes. In addition to Laptop mode, there’s Stand mode , Tablet mode , and Tent mode . One innovation that other convertibles can’t match is the X1 Yoga’s retractable backlit keyboard, an improvement over the last generation X1 Yoga. The keys retract into the keyboard deck after you tilt the screen beyond 190 degrees, so you can’t catch the caps on things and pull them out inadvertently. It also gives your hand a flat surface to grip when the system is in Tablet mode.

Best Security: Kensington Ld5400t
If you want something that can keep your device secure and safe while it’s hooked up to the dock, check out Kensington’s high-quality, high-price LD5400T offering. The arms of the dock clamp your laptop in place, and you can keep the dock itself in position with either screws or a tether that’s included with the dock. On top of the security features, the dock also has support for dual 4K 60Hz displays, four USB-A 3.0 ports, two Thunderbolt 3 slots, and 85W of charging. This makes it a high-end choice that will be perfect for users looking to both significantly increase their productivity and keep their device safe with rock-solid security.
Best Overall: Caldigit Ts3 Plus
If you want the absolute best of the best, you can’t beat the CalDigit TS3 Plus. Equipped with two Thunderbolt 3 ports as well as a whopping seven USB ports, five of which are USB-A 3.0 , this dock gives you a massive amount of freedom to connect a ton of different peripheral accessories and devices. On top of that, it also supports up to two 4K displays at 60Hz, or alternatively one 5K display at 60Hz. Finally, the dock offers 85W of charging power, and the secondary Thunderbolt 3 slot can put out 15W charging as well. It’s pricey, but it’s absolutely worth it.

Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Yoga Review: A 2
Has it really only been four years since Lenovo’s first Yoga hybrid? That 13-inch two-in-one PC was the biggest argument in favor of the then-new Windows 8 and its tile-based interface, because it could transform into a touch-friendly tablet with ease, and because it did so without compromising the familiar clamshell laptop experience that nearly every PC user is accustomed to.
Best Budget: Baseus Laptop Docking Station
If you don’t have a lot to spend on a laptop dock but still want something solid, the Baseus Laptop Docking Station is an amazing choice. It supports up to a single 4K 30Hz display and has three USB-A 3.0 ports as well as a USB-C port, and the dock is even capable of putting out 87W charging. It lacks an audio port and also doesn’t have Thunderbolt 3 or support for multiple displays, but at the price it’s sold for, those things aren’t expected anyway. It’s also the most compact dock on this list, which will be ideal for people who want to take their setup with them on travels.

Story Of Two Thinkpads
We ordered two ThinkPad X1 Yogas when they first appeared in 2016. The other one had a battery replaced under warranty because of extreme wear levels . Mine also had higher than normal wear levels. But not high enough to warrant a replacement I discussed this with a technician performing the replacement for the other X1 Yoga.
But I had other suspicions that my battery was not entirely well. The wear level jumped with every battery gauge reset. Sometimes it showed higher, sometimes lower. I could not rely on it to give me a truthful indication of battery health.
In addition, I noticed a strange behavior when charging the battery :
- The maximum charge of the battery was X mWh
- When charging, the computer would charge past X, sometimes by almost 10%
- When charging stopped, the current charge then dropped from over X to about 10-100 mWh less than X. This drop happened every single time I charged
- After reboot, this lesser amount became the maximum charge value.
So essentially the battery decreased the max charge amount AFTER EVERY SINGLE CHARGE. Maybe this is normal nowadays, but I never seen batteries behave like this. I heard that the fast charging batteries might behave like this I have many devices and never seen this behavior before.

A Decent Pick But Capable Choices Abound
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga is a bit larger than its competitors with 13.3-inch screens, but its extra bulk pays off in comfort. The larger 14-inch screen is easy on the eyes, and the comfy keyboard pampers your fingertips. It has enough power for a day’s work and is a good choice if you need to draw on the screen, since it stows its pen in a handy cubby. That said, it’s bested by our top pick, the HP EliteBook x360 on features including a 4K screen option, an IR camera, many more hours of battery life, and a smaller chassis. Other excellent alternatives include the Lenovo ThinkPad T470 , if you don’t need the convertible hinge, or the Microsoft Surface Book, if you want stronger performance and more than 19 hours of battery life.
