What Are Online Yoga Classes

20 Minute Yoga For Strength | Good Moves | Well Good

Yoga classes are traditionally taught in a studio or at a gym where an instructor will typically lead a group of students in a series of exercises. At the beginning of each exercise, the instructor will stand at the front of the room to model the posture for their students. Then, they will move around the room and physically adjust students to ensure that everyone is practicing with proper form.

Online yoga classes are just a modified version of this practice. Often, an instructor will lead a lesson the way they normally wouldmodeling each posture, and telling students what to do next. But instead of speaking to a group of in-person students, the instructor is just talking to a camera. Students can access these videos onlineeither live or once theyve finished recording.

What Is Katonah Yoga

KATONAH YOGA® was founded by Nevine Michaan of Katonah Yoga Center over 30 years ago. Influenced by the study of Hatha yoga, Chinese theory, and sacred geometry, she created, developed, and continues to refine this unique practice. Both esoteric and pragmatic, the Katonah theory and its practice promotes self-awareness through techniques that foster well-being, which facilitates personal transformation.

The essence of all Hatha Yoga practice is the postures . Once the basic posture is achieved, the form of the posture can then be deepened through study and through the work of the breath.

As an aid to deepening the experience of the postures, Katonah Yoga employs the vast resources of Taoist thought, a branch of Chinese philosophy, which is several thousand years old.

This simple, very clear system of natural laws and correspondences is used in Katonah Yoga as a kind of image bank to help move the mind through the body, and to deepen the mental understanding of the individual poses.

The synthesis of Taoist and classical Yogic thought produces a poetry of interpretation which is unique to Katonah Yoga Inlet Yogas Katonah Yoga® Teacher Training is open to teachers wishing to deepen their understanding of the principles of Katonah Yoga and those students with established practices wishing to learn more about the Katonah method.

What Is An Online Yoga Class Like

There are many different styles of yoga, so theres no one-size-fits-all formula for a classwhether youre taking one online or in-person. That said, most yoga sessions tend to start with a quick warm-up . Then, youll move into the workout itself. Youll usually end up moving through a series of postures, doing static holds of postures, or some combination of the two. Then, youll get a quick cool-down, which typically involves stretching, light movement, and meditation.

How Can You Perfect Your At

Treat yourself to a relaxing restorative class at the end of the day.

Having the power to start class at any time of day means I can work a yoga class into my schedule, especially on busier days when I wouldn’t have time to commute across town to and from classes. But pure convenience isn’t the only thing I like about my home practice. Just like you may have learned to outfit your workspace for an efficient and sustainable workday, you can ready your surroundings for a focused yoga flow.

I use my laptop to tune into classes, but you can also use a tablet, smartphone, or cast it from any of those devices to a smart TV. At first, I couldnt figure out a comfortable place for my laptop Id have to look up or back awkwardly during poses to see the screen. Ive settled for placing my laptop on top of a folding chair or a few yoga blocks in front of my matyou can use books if you dont have blocks. If you use a phone or tablet, you can prop it up using an extendable holder so you dont have to keep craning your neck to see the screen.

Its also vital to have a good yoga mat. I own Revieweds all-time favorite mat, the Lululemon Reversible 5mm. It’s been my go-to for years: The grip of the surface is extra-sticky and the mat itself doesnt ripple beneath my hands or feet while transitioning between poses. Its also reversible, which is useful on days when I want the padded side up for a bit more cushion during restorative practice.

Yoga Teacher & Psychologist

NYC Could Use Some Chill We Found It At Sky Ting Yoga ...

Initially, Vinyasa yoga intrigued me because of the experience of flow that I had never felt before. The alignment of breath with movements allowed me to flow in harmony with my body, lifting my mind off the daily buzz. This presence within my body and within the moment is what has brought me back onto the mat ever since. As a psychologist I am also interested in the effects of yoga on our mental wellbeing and work on different research projects that focus on alleviating mental distress through alternative therapies like yoga and meditation.

In 2015, I travelled through India for the first time. My stay at a yoga ashram in Rishikesh inspired me to participate in a teacher training myself one day in order to strengthen my self-practice and deepen my knowledge. Fulfilling this dream last spring at Trimurti Yoga in Goa, I discovered that my passion wasn’t only for practising yoga, but also for teaching. Sharing the incredible power yoga has on body, mind and spirit and supporting my students on their way to awareness and wellbeing, truly brings me joy. In my classes, I combine strong asana sequences with deep stretches, always synchronizing both with the breath to create dynamic flows that will lead my students to leave their day behind and make space for compassion, awareness and connection to themselves.

Ytt: The Antidote To A Quarter

The recent surge in teacher trainees isnt just because more Americans are practicing yoga today than ever, although thats definitely a part of it .

I think people are intrigued by yoga teacher training because anyone who has been through it says, It changed my life, says Jessica Rosen, owner of One Down Dog in LAs hip Silver Lake and Eagle Rock neighborhoods, who has been offering her own teacher training since 2013.

Considering that burnout is becoming commonplace by the age of 30, its not surprising that theres a gravitational pull toward that kind of deep transformation. Work in general is changing so much right now people are getting into a career and realizing, This isnt for me, notes Rosen. A lot of people who sign up for my teacher training are in transition…they want to do something different.

Even so, most of the yogis who go through teacher training dont end up making a full-time career out of itaccording to the Yoga Alliance survey, only 29 percent of teachers report yoga as their primary source of income. Weve found across the years that a lot of people who want to do teacher trainings do it to deepen their practice, not knowing if being a teacher is necessarily what they want to do, says Chloe Kernaghan, co-founder of NYCs Sky Ting studio.

“People are seeing really famous Instagram ‘yogalebrities’ that seem to have it all and can do these crazy things with their bodies”

Meet Chloe Kernaghan Co

I feel successful when I am living in integrity… The more honest I can get with myself and those around me, the clearer I feel and with that clarity, theres a feeling of triumph.

Chloe Kernaghan grew up on the island of Guam which is a tiny island centrally located in the Pacific Ocean. Chloe moved to NYC when she was 17 to attend NYU for undergrad. After graduating, Chloe was doing a lot of yoga and decided to take a yoga teacher training. This is where she met her friend and future Sky Ting business partner, Krissy Jones. She started teaching yoga at the studio where she did teacher training and found purpose through the practice.

In 2015, she and Krissy were having dinner on New Years Eve and the idea for a yoga studio came to be. It was really seeing the space that became their first studio in Manhattens Chinatown that made Chloe realize the vision for Sky Ting.

Today, Sky Ting has two locations in Manhattan and one in Brooklyn. Chloe teaches yoga, runs the day-to-day of Sky Ting and offers yoga retreats around the world. Outside of yoga, Chloe loves trips to Mexico, dance and time by the ocean.

What Are Your Options For Online Yoga Practice

Krissy Jones and Chloe Kernaghan founded Sky Ting in 2015.

Right now, I’m mainly using Sky Ting TV, the virtual platform offered by Sky Ting Yoga based in New York City, and Commune Yoga, a studio based in Seattle, Washington that offers live and on-demand classes for $45 a month. Prices for Sky Ting range on a sliding scale between $20 and $30 a month or $200 or $300 a year, but Sky Ting gave me a temporary membership to test for this article.

These studios, which have established virtual platforms, offer a blend of live and pre-recorded classes. I will join live classes if they are taught by my favorite teachers or have a fun theme, but mostly, I like to search for prerecorded classes because I can start and end them when needed. There also tends to be a wider variety of class times and styles that are prerecorded in online libraries.

Many Commune Yoga classes focus on mobility and stability.

Many smaller studios without specifically designated virtual platforms offer options to tune into classes, which is a great way to support local yoga businesses. In these classes, participants sign up in advance on a platform like Mindbody and join via video chat or Zoom, usually as an in-person class takes place at the same time. I love practicing live with teachers like Josie Schweitzer in Columbus, Ohio, Kyle Miller in Santa Monica, California, and Sheri Delaney in Bedford, New York because they make me smile and sweat.

How We Chose The Best Online Yoga Classes

To select the best online yoga classes, we considered a few elements. The first was membership cost: We wanted to keep our picks as budget-friendly as possible, because you deserve to meet your fitness goals without breaking the bank. Second, we assessed variety, looking for platforms that offered a diverse range of yoga coursesin terms of length, skill level, style, and more. And we also paid attention to whether the platform offered access to other kinds of exercise classes, like cardio, strength training, Pilatesyou name it.

Finally, we sought to include online yoga classes that met a range of different goals. If youre a beginner looking to build a new habit, youll probably have different needs than an advanced yogi hoping to deepen their practice. We sought to honor that by including a range of diverse options.

5 Yoga Stretches You Need to Know Before Going to Your ...

Inside/Out: What is your workout philosophy?Sky Ting: A little bit goes a long way. While traveling we dont always have the time or space for a luxurious 1 hour+ practice, so we get creative! Even if its 10 minutes of breathwork, or a quick headstand to wake us up, a practice doesnt have to be exactly what your normal routine is. Our favorite on-the-go travel poses: a cat/cow series, twists, pigeon, legs up the wall, and headstands!

I/O: Tell us about your travel essentials?Chloe: Olbas Oil. This is a potent essential oil, kind of like an all natural Vicks Vapor Rub. I keep it in my purse, use it on the plane, rub on my chest at night, and pour it on the floor in a steam shower if Im feeling super lethargic or under the weather.

And my Away Bigger Carry On. This suitcase has proved super practical again and again. Its just perfect. With a built in charger, its useful while on the road and even when you forget your converter while abroad and need a quick refill . Its a great size that fits all I ever need for a week away. And its so chic.

Krissy: Tap water. My acupuncturist told me to drink the tap water when I travel to a new place when I get off the plane. Apparently, it helps acclimate my body to the new environment and aids with digestion. It actually works for me!

Another essential is eye masks. I wear an eye mask on the plane and in my hotel room to sleep. It really helps with my sleep to make a room that is pitch black.

How I Shop: Sky Ting Founders Krissy Jones And Chloe Kernaghan

Chloe Kernaghan and Krissy Jones

We all buy clothes, but no two people shop the same. It can be a social experience, and a deeply personal one at times, it can be impulsive and entertaining, at others, purpose-driven, a chore. Where do you shop? When do you shop? How do you decide what you need, how much to spend and what’s “you”? These are some of the questions we’re putting to prominent figures in our column “How I Shop.”

Since opening up the very first Sky Ting yoga location in New York City in 2015, Krissy Jones and Chloe Kernaghan have managed to turn it into something of a global wellness brand. It’s a rare feat for a local fitness studio, to achieve such widespread awareness. But when you have the right mix of a modern, approachable teaching style, influential clientele and aesthetically pleasing studio space, you end up building buzz.

Jones and Kernaghan wisely capitalized on that in 2019 with the launch of Sky Ting TV, an online platform that allows members access to dozens of yoga videos from anywhere. Since the pandemic hit, unsurprisingly, the co-founders have pivoted to focusing almost entirely on that.

“The past few months for us have been a little bit of a logistical reconstruction,” explains Jones over Zoom. They’ve gotten out of leases for two of their studios, keeping only one in which to film videos. They’ve also put all of their teacher training online, hired PR, added new merch and beefed up their digital marketing efforts.

Sky Ting Yoga Turns A Thoughtful Practice Into Expressive Play

Combining the grace of a dancers choreographed movement and the ease of a yogis steady pose, Sky Ting Yoga Co-founders Krissy Jones and Chloe Kernaghan have harnessed a new kind of zen in their studio. Both with dance backgrounds and a passion for creative expression, the Co-founders have made Sky Ting more than a studioits a thriving community that seeks to provide a space for teachers and students alike to chill out in bustling New York City.

At their three locations in Chinatown, Tribeca, and Brooklyn, Jones and Kernaghan are making time for play and peace. A defining characteristic of their studios is the blending of various traditions, including Taoist, Hatha, Vinyasa, and Katonah into an expressive practice well-suited for beginners and experts alike. World travelers themselves, Jones and Kernaghan have pulled from numerous world cultures and thoughtful design to create a singular experience through their classes.

Even the name Sky Ting itself is an ode to the studios creative intercultural approach to yoga. In Chinese, Ting refers to a place, while in Jamaican patois, Ting means thing. The overall meaning is up to interpretationfloating somewhere between a place like heaven, or a celestial body like a shooting star, a bird, or a planet. The end result is an artful studio with plenty of space for freedom of expression, human connection, and some yoga thrown in for good measure.
