    What Is Yoga Nidra

Certified Hakomi Therapist | Certified EMDR Therapist | Certified Yoga Instructor

In August of 2018, I attended my second Yoga Nidra training, this time a 9-day training with my teacher, Yogarupa Rod Stryker. Besides being life-changing, several of us realized that we had not been fully doing Yoga Nidra! I realized that I was comfortably allowing myself to fade in and out of consciousness. Although I would pop back to awareness before the end of the practice, I would fade out and miss part of the instructions.

Yoga Nidra is sleepsleep with awareness, awareness being the important key. The goal is not to stay awake. The goal or intention is to stay aware. The mind and the body sleep, but awareness stays awake.

This was such an important learning for me. In this training, I came to understand, at a much deeper level, what Yoga Nidra is all about.

From the yogic perspective, there are three states of consciousness: waking, dreaming and dreamless or deep sleep. The waking state is equated with the physical body, the dreaming state with the subtle body or energy body, and the third state of deep sleep to the causal body, which is the subtlest body that veils pure consciousness, or what we refer to in yoga as the Atman. Our brain waves follow these three states when we sleep. Beyond deep sleep and the causal body, is turiya, or fourth state. It is the turiya state that we strive to connect with during Yoga Nidra.

ParaYoga Nidra is the sublime science of enlightened sleep, rooted in a vast body of knowledge and ancient tradition. ParaYoga Nidra has five distinct aims or outcomes, thus, the template for the practice changes depending upon which one of these five you wish to achieve. On the most basic level, ParaYoga Nidra is a comprehensive method for maximizing health and well being. On a deeper level, it is a profoundly spiritual practice and somewhere in between, it is one of the most profound and accessible ways to positively reshape the unconscious.

ParaYoga Nidra is a potent modality for:

    • Healing
    • Accessing the timeless wisdom of the sagesthe most subtle application of yoga nidra

Nearly everyone these days suffers from stress or anxiety at some point in their lives. Here in the UK in 2016/17, 12.5 million working days were lost due to work-related stress, depression or anxiety according to figures published by the HSE . Thats a heck of a lot of days.

So what can be done about it?

Yoga is often cited as a way to combat stress, but even yoga teachers get stressed . If only there was a way to circumnavigate our short-circuited fizzing brains and tap into the deep inner peace that is always there, but tantalisingly out of reach

And there is! The answer to our stress-related problems could well be Yoga Nidra.

    What is it?

Yoga Nidra is a form of guided meditation. It can be practised by anyone, whether you have previous experience of yoga or meditation or not.

Yoga Nidra provides the tools to access the deep rest and relaxation of sleep, while staying in a conscious state, in fact nidra literally means sleep.

This guided meditation allows the body to access the deep rest-like state controlled by the parasympathetic nervous system. The breath rate slows, the heart rate slows and the nervous system is given a well-needed rest.

    A Potted History

In ancient texts the term yoganidr was also used as a synonym for a profound state of meditation, known as samdhi the eighth and final limb of yoga. It is also thought of as a way to access the fourth state of consciousness, the other three being wakefulness, dreaming and deep sleep.

The practitioner is led, or leads themselves, into progressively deeper states of consciousness by systematically quieting the nervous system. This deeply restorative practice is said to be the origin of hypnosis. Yoga nidra can be used for healing, relaxation, and to cultivate meditative insight. Clinical studies have affirmed its benefits, including the relief of PTSD symptoms.

    Qigong And Yoga Nidra

Modern life is busy and stressful. The speed in which we live can be exhausting and the catalyst for a host of ailments. In our chronically overscheduled lives, learning to cultivate a sense of balance can be difficult. However, there is an ancient solution to this very modern problem: Qigong, a centuries-old method viewed as a way to find peace, balance, mindfulness and a way to tap into ones life energy.

Originating in China, qigong is actively practiced around the globe by people of all ages from those seeking increased flexibility, health, spirituality, improved posture, and ease of movement.

Qigong can best be described as a gentle form of martial arts that unites breathing, movement, and meditation. It literally has hundreds of styles and applications, traditions, practices, and lineages. What is agreed upon is that, at its centre, qigong is a philosophy based on two essential aspects: QI, the subtle breath or vital energy and GONG, a skill cultivated through steady practice working to stimulate and balance our energy system.

Rod Stryker describes Yoga Nidra as relaxing into greatness, which just about sums it up for me!

It also provides us with the opportunity to let go of our day and fall into the deepest sleep

MY 5 BIGGEST TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE:

1- Hierarchy in teaching doesn’t have to be informed my patriarchy or dominance. The role of a teacher is to lead by definition, but to eventually make themselves obsolete, by empowering their students so they can walk away and stand in their own wisdom and capacities.

2- Ultimately what determines the quality of your life is the quality of your perception of life and the depth of your own self-awareness. Yoga is about the mind more than it is about the body. The end goal is the refinement of the quality of your perception, so yoga asana is a meditation tool.
