Yoga Architecture Of Peace

Yoga – The architecture of peace

It was then that yoga presented itself to him as an option to heal his nervous system, slow down his life to appreciate it and discover a millenary world where time passes at a different pace and priorities are far from the New York glamour to which he was accustomed.

First it was a book published in 2015 by Taschen and now it is a documentary available on Netflix, in which we can discover the philosophical keys of yoga and its basis as a spiritual discipline. It is a call to the awakening of consciousness to change our approach to the privilege and meaning of existence, of being. And thats a great reason to watch it.

If you love yoga and are already familiar with its history and principles, this documentary will remind you why you chose this practice as part of your evolution. But if youre not a yogi, I recommend it twice as much, because its a simple way to learn what its all about and, in addition, get a message that is useful for life, whether you do yoga or not. It is guaranteed inspiration.

Why Do You Practice You Might Find Some Answers In This Movie

Somewhere along the way in my own yoga journey, my dedication to the practice became clear to my friends and family, and they would ask why? What is it about yoga that draws you in? Ive had many friends and students share this same experience. People want to know why they find yoga so compelling.

I feel great after a class. It helps me feel balanced. The poses help me with my neck/back/shoulders/etc. Your answer to this question might be in one of these areas of physical or mental health. But often, I find that the answer is difficult to articulate. I usually want to say to people: I cant explain it to you, you have to experience for yourself but it is life-altering.

What is yoga doing for you? I recently watched a Netflix movie entitled On Yoga: The Architecture of Peace. Made in 2017 by director Heitor Dhalia, it follows photographer Michael ONeill as he talks to Yoga masters in India, Tibet and New York. Its a wonderfully visual movie and enjoyable for the cinematography alone. But I found myself most drawn in by the various descriptions of what yoga is, and what it does for practitioners, to be the most compelling.

A highlight for me was this message:

What a powerful message. And what a tremendous answer to the why? question. Why do you love yoga? It provides me with the tools to cultivate the happiness I already have within me. Or maybe more simply: When I practice, I can literally see my path to happiness.

Ill take that every day and twice on Sunday.

Q& a Photographer And Film Subject Michael Oneill

2017. 92 m. Heitor Dhalia. Netflix. Brazil/India/China/US. English. Rated NR.

When award-winning photographer Michael ONeill, who has produced iconic photos of some of the most famous personalities of our time, discovered yoga and meditation, he turned his lens on a new subject: yogas greatest practitioners. Over a decade of travels in Asia and at home, his aim was not only to capture dramatic, beautiful poseswhich he did in abundancebut also to portray the philosophy behind them, making the thousands-year-old tradition more accessible. The result was a stunning 2015 book and this simply gorgeous, revealing new film. Conversations illuminate his subjects thoughts on the role of yoga in contemporary culture, the history of the practice, and the healing power of what ONeill calls the architecture of peacea series of postures that bring the practitioner closer to touching the infinite.

Michael ONeill will sell and sign a limited number of copies of his book after the screening. These spectacular pictures of yoga practitioners from India and Tibet will make you gawp and gasp on disbelief. Its a book that informs, inspires and offers a provocative window into the yoga soul.

The result of his decade-long immersion, On Yoga: The Architecture of Peace , is a study as much in anthropology and sociology as in beauty of form and spirit. What Ive tried to do with my work in generalnot just the yogais to tell a story thats more than just a specific image, he says.

The book is a time capsule of practically the entirety of our moment in yoga, featuring striking images of everyone from Krishnamacharya to the Indian Sadhu community to Sting. But ONeill says the work is always the same. A portrait is always an agreement, he says. An agreement is established in one form or another on whatever wavelength to work together and share the process and the same goal of making a great picture. Yogis, he says, make his job easier.

    • Pin

Peace is defined in many ways, but those definitions all have to do with freedom. The freedom from not having to worry about war with others or even a war with yourself and your oppressive thoughts and emotions. Silence, harmony, freedom, and tranquility are all words that are associated with the word peace.

Coming to the conclusion that there is only so much that you can change and there are some things that you personally cannot change is a good first step in finding your way to peace. While practicing yoga and meditating, quieting down that chatter in your mind by focusing on your breaths and making that connection between your mind and body can help you have a sense of peace as well.

Poses of Peace Michael ONeills meditation on the essence of yoga

Its taken yoga several thousand years to journey from a handful of monasteries dotting the Himalayas to the myriad studios of London, Lower Manhattan, and beyond. Whether bathing with holy men in the Ganges or joining the chorus of a thousand voices chanting om, photographer Michael ONeill decided to devote himself to experiencing and recording the world of yoga at this critical juncture in its history. The result is a powerful photographic tribute to the age-old discipline turned global phenomenon, with over 250 million practitioners united in physical, spiritual, and mindful practice worldwide.

Famous for his photographs of the famous, ONeill first set out to make portraits of the most influential yogis of our timeB. K. S. Iyengar, T. K. V. Desikachar, and Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa, among othersas well as those known for integrating yoga into their high-profile lives, such as Donna Karan, Sting, and Trudie Styler. But as his yoga and meditation practice deepened, so did his drive to look past the personalities and the poses to document the roots of yoga. Over ten years ONeill trekked beyond the traditional epicenters to meditate with monks in the Tibetan Plateau, live with sadhus in their tents at the Kumbh Mela, and marvel at the boys who practice the little known discipline of Mallakhamba at the wrestling grounds in Kochi.
