Lularoe Lululemon And Old Navy Were Among The Brands That Tested Positive For Pfas

PFAS include a broad range of compounds researchers often test for them by screening for a specific substance called fluorine.

The lab test ordered by Mamavation specifically tested for fluorine in the crotch area of the clothes.

Products that were found to contain detectable levels of fluorine include a pair of pants from Lululemon, which contained 32 parts per million fluorine. Another Lululemon product did not test positive for fluorine.

The highest amount of fluorine, 284 parts per million, was found in a pair of leggings from LuLaRoe.

Fluorine was also detected in products from Athleta and Old Navy , both owned by Gap, Inc.

The brands mentioned did not respond to Insider’s request for comment.

The full list can be found on the Mamavation website. The post was reviewed by environmental health researchers and partially funded by Environmental Health News.

Brands With Pfas Indicators

The eight pairs that had PFAS indicators were:

  • Athleta Girl Chit Chat Shorts
  • Gaiam High Rise Waist Yoga Pants Performance Compression Workout Leggings

Testing Finds Fluorinean Indicator Of Pfasin Womens Sportswear From Popular Brands Like Old Navy And Lululemon

One in four pairs of popular leggings and yoga pants tested have detectable levels of fluorine, an indicator of toxic PFAS, according to a new report from Mamavation.

Partnering with EHN.org, the environmental wellness blog and community Mamavation tested the activewear and found levels of fluorine ranging from 10 parts per million up to 284 ppm in eight pairs of leggings and pants, out of 32 tested. EHN.org partially funded the testing and Pete Myers, chief scientist of Environmental Health Sciences, which publishes Environmental Health News, reviewed the findings.

While the testing doesnt prove per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances are in the products, fluorine is a strong indicator of the forever chemicals which have been linked to everything from cancer to birth defects to lower vaccine effectiveness.

I cant recall exactly when it happened, but I cant help but correlate my increased interest in fitness with the influx of cute workout clothes. In my younger years, I wore rolled Soffe shorts and black and white Nike sports bras. We didnt have patterned bike shorts, one-pieces, long-line brasall the things we love now. And after getting dozens of ads for the new Old Navy activewear line, Powersoft, we found it had hit basically every criteria we want in workout clothes. Our editors tried a few different styles to get a feel of the fabric, the fit, and everything in between:

Ive been struggling with activewear lately. I am working out more than ever doing all different kinds of activity that has me moving in so many different ways that my old workout gear just couldnt keep up. Then, my sizing changed , so everything that once fit me, is incredibly uncomfortable and hard to work out in now. Having to constantly pull my leggings up when Im working out or move a bra around so my boobs arent falling out or pull a shirt out is more exhausting than the workout itself. And I also am no RockefellerI need workout clothes that are affordable too, and being cute and trendy doesnt hurt either.

Pfas Are ‘forever Chemicals’ Linked To Health Issues But It’s Not Clear How Risky Skin Contact May Be

It’s unclear how risky PFAS in clothing might be for health, but even small amounts should be avoided when possible, Andrews told Insider.

“It’s very difficult to completely avoid exposure to the compounds,” he said. “Unnecessary exposure through clothing is adding to the burden of exposure through numerous sources.”

Low-level exposures, including in the household and through clothing, may accumulate and cause potential health issues, according to the EPA.

Research has linked high levels of PFAS exposure to health issues like kidney and testicular cancers, liver damage, and developmental issues.

PFAS can show up in a variety of products, from cosmetics to bottled water. The riskiest exposure comes from ingesting the chemicals through contaminated food or water, or inhaling them in the air, according to research.

PFAS in manufactured clothing may not pose a direct risk to the wearer, Joe Schwarcz, director of the McGill University Office for Science and Society, wrote in an article for the McGill. But they can contribute to the chemicals leaching into the environment. Scientists have recommended phasing out PFAS to the reduce the risk of ongoing contamination, Bloomberg reported.

There are currently no federal regulations for PFAS, although states like New York have proposed regulatory legislation.

In your search for the best workout clothes, its important to choose activewear styles suited for your activities of choice. Do you need an option for HIIT class or a 45-minute Peloton ride? Higher-impact activities will require more supportive pieces than lower-impact ones, like, say, a yoga or Tai Chi class. I love to think about how someone wants to feel when they get ready to work out, says Kristal Hill, Creative Director of Design for FP Movement. Im always considering the type of fitness different people love. If its more soft and graceful, it will inform more femininity with delicate details, or if its more intense and powerful, then that will translate through stronger materials and details.

And when it comes to materials, no matter which activity-specific silhouette you land on, the pair should include fabrics that are durable, comfortable and not see-through. To me, its all about spandex, says Kelsey Sheahan, iFIT trainer specializing in pilates, sculpt and strength training and running. Its lightweight yet durable, breathable but not see-through and sweat-wicking, so you have less of a chance walking into Whole Foods post-workout showing off how hard you worked in class. Hill also keeps to materials that wick away sweat and dry quickly but still maintain a softness and comfort.

Taking into account all these factors, there are a few key pieces youll likely want to add to your workout wardrobe from top womens activewear brands:

Pfas Exposure Through Clothes

OLD NAVY Activewear Review & Try-On

It is unclear what exposure to PFAS through clothing means for humans, however, previous lab research by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health found that PFAS skin exposure poses similar health risks as ingesting the chemicals via food or water.

While we know that PFAS can be absorbed through the skin we dont have much information about how much would be transferred from activewear products. Its unlikely to be zero, Myers, chief scientist at Environmental Health Sciences, told Mamavation.

Experts told Mamavation its likely the chemicals are in the clothing as a treatment for stain- and water-resistance or sweat wicking or due to contamination from lubricants or cleaning chemicals used during manufacturing.

How To Wash Your Activewear

Activewear is constructed of different fabrics than the rest of the items in your hamper, so might need more attention. Drew Westervelt, founder and CEO of HEX Performance laundry detergent made for activewear, provides some helpful tips. Most activewear is made of tightly-woven modern fabrics, including nylon and spandex. Regular detergent can clog fibers and ruin high-performance fabrics, he shares. A detergent that is made especially for activewear like HEX Performance will not only clean your gear but protect the integrity and eliminate odor-causing bacteria.

To start, run your pieces in the washer on a gentle, cold wash setting and avoid using too much detergent to try to clean better, as it actually makes things worse, Westervelt advises. Next, hang dry your workout clothes or place them in the dryer. If you go the latter route, keep in mind that traditional dryer sheets are not suited for activewear, since they leave a wax coating on the fabric that damages the flexible sweat-wicking features, Westervelt warns. To avoid damage, he recommends using HEX Performances Wet Dryer Sheets, which are made to clean, soften and protect without leaving any residue behind.

Finding The Right Workout Shirt

Material is an especially important factor to consider regardless of what your workout is and where youre doing it. Thats because a moisture-wicking and breathable workout shirt will keep you the most comfortable. The best workout shirts are made of technical fabrics, like polyester, nylon, and stretchy elastane or spandex. Technical fabrics allow sweat to easily evaporateso you stay drier and coolerand move with you. Polyester is terrific at wicking sweat as you heat up, whereas nylon is lightweight, very durable, and stretchy. Wool is another great fabric for workout shirts, because its naturally sweat-wicking, temperature-regulating, and odor-fighting. It performs well in all seasons but can be a bit more expensive than other fabrics. Overall, these materials help keep you performing at your best.

Old Navy Hopes Athletic Clothes Will Be Its Next Big Thing

  • Bloomberg

SAN FRANCISCO, United States Old Navy‘s latest advertisement has nothing to do with the low-priced jeans and discounted basics that made it a multibillion-dollar business. Rather, it’s chock full of athletics a woman wallops a punching bag in a gym, a young breaker dances in a schoolyard, a free-runner does flips on a rooftop.

It’s a plug for Old Navy Active, the brand’s athletic wear line that has remained fairly quiet since its launch in 2011. Like its other offerings, Old Navy’s going for mass appeal with its performance items, instead of the exclusivity of Lululemon or the hard-core athletic appeal of Under Armour. With its “Built For Play” tagline, Active seeks to establish itself as a viable sub-brand under the Old Navy banner, an effort to clothe entire families when they’re out doing anything sporty. That’s why it sells its activewear to both men and women, carries petite, plus, and tall sizes, and even has polyester mesh shorts and zip-front hoodies for toddlers. And the prices are accessible shoppers can find racerback tanks on sale for less than $10, yoga pants for $15, and sports bras marked down to $7.
