I bought the 1,5mm Manduka travel mat several years ago when I was planning on flying to Paris with Ryanair. I know I could only have hand luggage, so this mat seemed like the perfect choice.

Before I made the video and did the seasoning of my mat, I watched other bloggers who did the same with their Manduka mats. Some suggested rubbing in the salt. Others said you had to let it sit in the sun for 24 hours with the salt on top and showed them leaving it outside for the duration.
I could see how you might think that as the icon for step 3let sit for 24 hoursshow the sun and the moon. I think it was there to show the progression of time, not to instruct you to leave the mat in the sunshine. Either way, I did season my mat in a sunny room. But, considering it was January and below freezing outside, the sun coming in through the windows was the best I could do.
How To Clean Your Manduka Mat
So, what are the steps to clean your Manduka mat? They are pretty simple, actually.
For starters youre supposed to wipe the mat down after each practice or use. I like my Wipex All Natural wipes for cleaning my yoga mat as well as all of my exercise equipment.
Manduka recommends using its Manduka All-Purpose Mat Wash to do this. Im not sure if thats the same thing as the yoga mat wash & refresh product I just mentioned.
However, when I searched the Manduka website for an all-purpose mat wash, the refresh product was the only thing that came up. So maybe Manduka needs to update the messaging to reflect current products available.
On the one hand, Amazon has plenty of other yoga mat wash products available as well. On the other hand, I dont know if youll void the Manduka lifetime warranty if you clean it using non-Manduka products.

Sizes Comes In 2 Sizes
Another advantage of Manduka Pro is that it comes in two sizes. The standard 71/178cm and the longer 85/216cm.
After some research I did on yoga mat sizes, I found that the standard length of yoga mats tends to range from 68/173cm and 71/178cm. This range is suitable for most practitioners of standard height.
And so if you are of standard height, go for the 71/178cm. If you are 62 and above it is worth looking out for the 85/216cm version.

Manduke Equa Yoga Mat
The Manduka eQua is designed specifically for hot yoga. Its a hybrid of their eQua towel and eKO mat. The top layer is a soft microfiber thats sweat absorbent and moisture activated. The bottom layer is the natural rubber base thats used in their eKO mat.
The eQua is 68 x 26, 4 mm thick and weighs 5 lbs. Its two inches wider than most 68 mats which buys you a little more space in crowded rooms and means you wont go off the sides. Its currently only offered in a few styles and its not as popular as their other mats or mat / towel combos for hot yoga. One person reported that they were slipping on this mat in Vinyasa but didnt specify if it was heated or if they were sweating. Keep in mind that the top layer is moisture activated and in classes where youre not sweating, it wont be a good fit.

From my personal experience, I can say that Ive had my Manduka Pro for almost 12 years. I practice on it and I teach on it and it only has some very faint signs of wear and tear.
Manduka Pro Travel Yoga Mat
- It is very easy to clean. Just wipe it with a wet cloth and it will dry in no time.
- It is very portable. It is not only very thin, only 2.5 mm thick, but you can actually fold this mat to pack it in your suitcase or backpack. Believe it or not, it won’t keep the creases of the fold. I wouldn’t push it too far though.
- It is lightweight. I prefer lighter but at 2.4 lbs it still feels comfortable to carry with you.
- It is sustainable. Their manufacturing process has no toxic emissions, their mats are safe for humans and above all, they last a lifetime. Even this thin travel mat is covered by Manduka’s lifetime warranty.
- It feels very grippy. I haven’t tested it when sweating but while dry it felt very grippy to my hands.

Manduka Yoga Mat Lengths
Average height
For most people, a 71 yoga mat is plenty. Both the PROlite and PRO come in 71 sizes.
Above average height
If youre over 6ft tall or if you want a little extra space I recommend a mat longer than 71. Im 63 and my feet hang off 71 mats. The PROlite comes in 79 and is a great option.
Very tall
You will hang way off standard sized yoga mats. In this case, the PRO 85 is your best option. I love how comfortable this mat is.
Cleaning Simply Wipe It Down
Another great feature about a Manduka Pro is how easy it is to clean. Manduka Pro yoga mats are made of PVC which is considered to be the closed-cell type of yoga mat.
Manduka Pro yoga mats are made of PVC, which is resistant to water. And so a PVC yoga mat is considered a closed-cell yoga mat.
This means that if you sweat during your practice, the mat wont absorb any of the sweat. This, in turn, means that you can simply wipe down your mat after every practice. This is an excellent choice for people who sweat a lot, as it may help make the mat more hygienic.
There are two main ways to clean a Manduka yoga mat:
- The DIY method There are three mixtures you can prepare to clean your Manduka yoga mat. One is with water, vinegar, and tea tree oil. The second is with 1tsp baking soda in water. The third is with warm water and dish soap. Spray your mat with the solution, simply wipe it down and let it air dry.

I dont know about you, but one of the quickest ways to damage a yoga mat in my opinion is a dirty and smelly yoga mat. I dont think you will have any problems keeping this yoga nat clean.

Using My Mat After The Break
Ill admit that the first time I unrolled the mat after the seasoning process, I wasnt impressed. My hands were still sliding. But, with each subsequent practice, I noticed that they were sliding a little less.
Of course, my hands were also coming out of each practice salty, which my dogs loved. I mean, they love licking me after I salty with sweat anyway so this was like an added bonus for them. But, seriously, I think I need to wash down the mat a little better to get rid of the remaining salt residue.
My Manduka pro yoga mat did come with a Manduka mat cleaner. Its called yoga mat wash & refresh spray from Manduka. Its a lavender scent.
So I plan on using that to help get rid of residual salt or any other dirt that might be on the mat. Because Ive learned that its a dirty mat that can make for a slippery mat.
Also, as I mentioned, I tend to have sweaty hands and feet. Maybe its my anxiety. Or maybe Im just a sweaty person. Anyway, very soon I want to write a blog post on how to practice yoga with sweaty hands and feet. Im sure Im not the only person with this issue of sweaty hands.
