How To Ensure You Arent Doing Too Much
To help ensure that you arent exercising too vigorously, you should use a rate of perceived exertion.
It is when you rate your workout on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being minimal effort and 10 being maximal exertion.
When trying to conceive, I recommend that you do not exceed a 7.
A simple way to track this is to see if you are able to hold a very basic conversation with 3 word sentences.
Never work to the point where you cannot speak.
Also, its a good idea to not let your heart rate approach your maximum heart rate .
Now lets go over what type of exercises you can do.
What Type Of Yoga Is Best For Fertility
There are many styles of yoga that include different sequences practiced at different paces and varying levels of intensity.
Hatha, Iyengar, Yin or Restorative yoga are gentle practices that are good for beginners and can be beneficial when trying to conceive.
Fertility yoga might be a gentle flowing sequence. This will include poses that encourage blood flow to the uterus, hips, heart, and other abdominal organs. It may include poses such as bridge, light twists, and legs up the wall. Cat/ cow, hip rotations, cobblers, supported goddess pose, to name but a few, says Cherie.
Meditations and specific breathing techniques are used during certain yoga sequences. These help to balance complex emotions, improve sleep and increase feelings of self-compassion, adds Cheryl.
There are also yoga classes designed to aid those who are undergoing IVF treatment with different moves for each of the different stages.
You may decide to refrain from more vigorous types of yoga such as Ashtanga and Vinyasa. Hot yoga should be avoided while trying to conceive or if youre pregnant, due to the 40°C studio temperature that may pose a risk.
What Type Of Yoga Should I Practice After Ovulation
Ive written another blog post on yoga for the two week wait but I want to dive a little deeper into this post and give you some more information on the why behind these points and also the how it might apply to you
Yoga after ovulation should be gentle and nurturing.
Yoga during the two week wait shouldnt be physically challenging or push the body in any way.* If youre practicing yoga in a regular class come to childs pose and rest whenever you feel that you get too hot or that you are struggling to catch your breath.
*I want to add a side note to this point. Everyones challenge point is different. If youve been running marathons or power-lifting prior to trying to conceive, a strong yoga class might actually be your version of gentle and nurturing.
Whereas if youve been doing no movement prior to TTC, a power flow class might be too challenging. Only you can define what feels gentle and nurturing to you at this time. You shouldnt be afraid to move when youre trying to conceive. Instead, I really want to encourage you to tune in to how your body feels when you move. If you feel good keep going!
Yoga after ovulation should help reduce your stress of the TWW
Anyone who has struggled to conceive knows that the two week wait is often a time riddled with anxiety, stress and just general TTC obsessive mania
This is a really great time to lean on your yoga practice for its stress-relieving benefits. And remember, yoga isnt just about the physical practice.

Where Can You Practice Fertility Yoga
If you can find a fertility yoga class near you, obviously that is the best way to start a regular practice. A yoga teacher will be able to correct your postures and make sure you are not over-stretching.
Its worth asking your local studio if they have fertility yoga classes or a similar class that would beneficial.; I found the fertility yoga class that I attended through my IVF clinic so that is also a good place to ask as they may have some contacts for you.
Fertility yoga is not normally available outside of major metro areas so if you are unable to find a class, you can get great benefits from practising yoga in the comfort of home.
There are quite a few fertility yoga DVDs on the market, my favorite is the;Yoga 4 Fertility DVD.
I love the Yoga 4 Fertility because the instructor is the narrator from Desperate Housewives so her voice was soothing and familiar.;
Is It Safe To Practice Yoga While Pregnant
If you already have an established yoga practice, you don’t have to give it up entirely once you get pregnant. Many poses will be safe to continue while others may need to be modified or omitted. It is a good idea to let your instructor know that you are pregnant.
As a rule, starting any new type of exercise while pregnant is probably not a good idea. If you have never practiced yoga before, or you have minimal experience with yoga, sticking to prenatal yoga classes is your best bet. These routines are gentle and designed specifically for expectant mothers.

When Can I Resume My Practice
Getting back to your normal routine may take anywhere between a few weeks to a few months. Keller suggested listening to your body to know when it is safe to resume your regular practice. However she also advised postpartum people to continue to avoid deep backbends because this can lead to or exacerbate diastis recti.
Choosing To Continue Hot Yoga
According to birth doula and prenatal yoga teacher Natalie Edward, if you hope to continue taking part in hot yoga during pregnancy, you may do so safely as long as the following apply and your care provider is on board:
- You were practicing hot yoga prior to becoming pregnant.;
- Your pregnancy is low-risk and there are no health concerns.
- You know how to modify your practice for pregnancy.
Hot yoga can provide a great workout, including such benefits as stress relief, improved muscle tone, and increased blood flow to the legs and arms.;According to Edward, there are some personal benefits to continuing to practice such as being able to maintain a routine that supports your physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
During her own pregnancies, Edward continued to practice hot yoga. Her training as a yoga teacher made it easy for her to modify poses to suit her changing body. For example, Edward did malasana instead of forward fold and avoided reclined twists and deep core work.
I found it helped me stay more in tune with my body, even more than before pregnancy,” Edward says.
Of course, staying in tune meant honoring the need to set her own pace. “Toward the end of my pregnancies, I noticed that I had to move at a much slower pace than the rest of the class just because transitioning between poses took longer with a larger belly,” she says.

Types Of Yoga That Are Good For Fertility
- Hatha yoga This is the most common type of yoga you will find at studios. The poses below are from Hatha yoga
- Vinyasa yoga This yoga flows together in a series of sun salutations. It is sometimes called yoga flow.
- Ashtanga yoga this is fast paced and more likely to leave you out of breath than hatha yoga. Also called power yoga.
- Restorative yoga this is a gentle style of yoga focusing on breathing and relaxing poses.
One popular type of yoga is Bikram or hot yoga. I am not including that on the list as it is not recommended for pregnant women.
It is probably best to stick to the other types of yoga that are safe for pregnancy and the two week wait while you are trying to conceive.
Modification: Chaturanga To Upward
To keep your belly from hitting the ground, perform the sequence on blocks. You can also come down on your knees if the weight is too heavy to support.
At some point, the stretching of upward-facing dog may be too much for your stomach and at that point, youll want to skip it and transition straight into downward dog from standing poses.

How Much Should You Exercise When Trying To Conceive
When trying to conceive, you should try to exercise 30 minutes a day, ~5 days a week with moderate activity.
With that said, your exercise routine will depend on your activity levels prior to becoming pregnant.
If you have never exercised before, I recommend that you start slow and work your way up in intensity.
If you are a competitive athlete, with a vigorous training routine- you may actually have to decrease the intensity of your workouts. This isnt the time to try and set maximum effort personal records.
Lets talk about how much is too much.
Are Balance Poses Safe While Pregnant
If balance poses were part of your practice before you became pregnant, it may be safe to continue them if you feel comfortable doing so. However, any poses with a risk of falling that you have not tried previously are best to avoid.
If these poses are a part of your practice and you would like to continue them while you are expecting, be aware that your center of balance will change as your pregnancy progresses. You may want to consider standing close enough to a wall or bar to catch yourself if you slip, or use props like blocks as an extra precaution.

How Much Exercise Is Too Much When I’m Trying To Conceive

Meditation is proven to radically decrease stress levels in men and women. Even five to 10 minutes of meditation a day can deliver enormous health benefits. See it as a gym for the mind: What physical exercise does for the body, meditation can do for the mind.

This affects the neural circuits of the brain, which in turns affects how we respond to situations around us. The Supported Bridge Pose
Clasp the back of the ankles with your hands, if you can. Alternatively, place your hands, palms flat, on floor.
This is a fairly strenuous exercise as it requires you to use your buttock muscles to hold yourself up. This is, of course, also a good thing!
In this pose you are lifting your pelvic region, allowing energy to circulate to the uterus and ovaries. This is also slightly stimulating the thyroid gland in the throat. Stay in this pose anywhere from 30 seconds to a couple of minutes, depending on your strength.Note: If you are a beginner, this pose can be made slightly easier by tucking your shoulders backward, placing your elbows beneath your hip area, and supporting your lower back with your hands.
Prenatal Yoga Is A Safer Choice
Prenatal yoga, facilitated by a well-trained instructor, is designed to meet the physical needs specific to the pregnant experience. Amanda DeGrace, owner of Little Lotus Yoga, specializes in prenatal, mom and baby, and family yoga.
Pregnancy is a great time to start to really nourish and nurture within, Degrace says. From her perspective, prenatal yoga is an ideal way to do so. We highly recommend a prenatal yoga class during pregnancy that is done in a regular temperature room. ;
Though she doesn’t recommend hot yoga during pregnancy, DeGrace does believe individuals who have practiced hot yoga for an extended period of time might be safe to carry on doing so .
DeGrace also pointed out how “common pregnancy sensations, such as nausea, can often have even the most dedicated hot yogi student looking for a change of pace.”
Even if hot yoga was your go-to pre-pregnancy, it may not feel the same during pregnancy. Prenatal yoga is a good alternative that allows you to nurture yourself and take care of your body as it continues to change and grow.
