Whats So Special About Hot Yoga
Well, the clues in the name. Its hot. Not just a little bit cozy, but sweating-from-the-back-of-your-eyeballs hot.
If youve ever been in a sauna, then youll know the kind of feeling Im talking about.
And as anyone whos been in a sauna can tell you, theres just something about that intense, delicious heat that feels really good for your body.
So why exactly is feeling like youve been basted like a turkey in the oven meant to be good for you?
Spending time in the intense heat, like in a hot yoga class, has a host of health benefits. Its been known to improve your circulation, as youll find that your heart beats faster to help your body cool down, which has the added perk of raising your heart level and your metabolism.
It also helps flush toxins from your body, as youre sweating buckets and hopefully drinking lots of fresh water to replace it. That can help you feel cleaner inside and out, as your skin looks clearer, your eyes look brighter, and your digestive system feels less sluggish.
Sweating like mad in a hot yoga class also helps to relieve stress, reducing the symptoms of depression and anxiety which can have a knock-on effect on all the other reasons we often put weight on.
Simply put, getting sweaty in a hot room can leave you feeling on top of the world, helping you feel invigorated, de-stressed and energized.
So far, so good. So, what are the benefits of hot yoga for weight loss?
How Soon Did I Start Seeing Results With Hot Yoga
I started seeing noticeable results, including a significant decrease in my belly bulge, more toned arms and general improved strength, within 1-2 weeks of starting hot yoga. This was at a pace of 5 lessons a week and doing no other exercise or making any dietary changes.
Motivated by my quick results and how much better I felt about myself, I started to crave hot yoga. I found myself checking the time just to see if it was time for class yet.
The results just got better from there my husband noticed it and my instructors noticed it my recently purchased yoga tops already fitting more loosely around my middle.
Towards the end of my three-month experiment, I felt that changes to the naked eye had plateaued or at least slowed down, but I think this is only natural in any weight loss or body transformation journey. And despite my belly looking basically the same for a few weeks, it felt very different. When I touched it, I could feel the hardening muscles underneath and I knew they would show themselves with some more time and hard work.
In 12 weeks, I did a total of 45 lessons . That’s an average of 3.75 lessons a week.

How Hot Yoga Helps With Weight Loss
Its more than just the sweat factor.
Yoga often gets compared to Pilates, but while youll usually do both of them on a mat, there are quite a few differences. Pilates is a great exercise for improving muscle tone, helping with posture, and building core strength.
Yoga meanwhile focuses on a combination of the whole body, breath, and mind, and its the blend of all three that can help you achieve your weight loss goals.
Dynamic hot yoga classes will focus on moving all parts of your body. A typical class will leave you feeling the burn in your upper and lower body, as well as your core, and the challenging balance poses will also help build strength and stability overall.
Hot yoga is also brilliant for helping improve your flexibility. Because of the heat, you wont need to spend so much time warming up, and your muscles will feel a lot easier to stretch, helping you get into more challenging poses, much more easily.
Never been able to touch your toes? Hot yoga might just change that.

The number of calories burned doing it also depends on what type of yoga you do, for how long, and what your current weight is. To have yoga help you lose weight, Young recommends practicing yoga four times a week and pairing it with extra cardio, like shadow boxing or running.
It’s natural to want fast results, but the most successful dieters lose weight slowly. The CDC recommends losing no more than one to two pounds per week.

Bikram Hot Yoga Classes For Detoxification Of The Body
Bikram hot yoga benefits for weight loss are numerous and detoxification of the body is one of them. Intense physical activity in a heated room increases the metabolic function and the amount of sweat produced by the body. When the body is hot, skin pores open up and sweat is produced continuously to regulate body temperature. When sweat evaporates, the skin, which is the largest organ in the body, will cool off, making the body temperature decrease. The sweating process makes getting rid of some toxins easier. The increased blood flow due to a higher heart rate makes it also a lot faster. The toxins go from the blood through sweat out of the body. It is the case for heavy metals like cadmium, mercury, arsenic, and lead, known to arm the heart, brain, and immune system. The high quantity of sweat going through the pores during Bikram hot yoga classes is responsible for getting rid of some of these toxins. But most toxins are eliminated by the liver and kidneys. Drinking a lot of water before and after your yoga practice ensures that these organs function efficiently. Keeping your skin hydrated is also important and I recommend using coconut oil as a natural moisturizer. Main point: The heat of Bikram yoga courses keep the body hot making the skin cells produce a lot of sweat to help regulate its temperature. By flowing out of the skin pores, sweat takes with it some toxins out of the body. Higher blood flow is responsible for weight loss. Detox is the byproduct.

Things To Keep In Mind When Doing Yoga
But to achieve that goal of flat stomach, one must be aware of few yoga principles and follow them to achieve the maximum benefits:

- Always be happy about the practice and do not do it half heartedly.
- Eat good and clean food to for the results to show up quickly.

What Yoga Can’t Do
Practicing any type of yoga will build strength, but studies show that yoga does not raise your heart rate enough to make it the only form of exercise you need to shed pounds. In order to lose weight, you must eat healthily and burn calories by doing exercise that raises your heart rate on a regular basis. More vigorous yoga styles can provide a better workout than gentle yoga, but if weight loss is your primary goal, you will want to combine yoga with running, walking, or any other aerobic exercise that you enjoy. Still, yoga can play an important role in a weight loss program.

How Does It Work
In 2005, medical researcher and practicing yogi Alan Kristal, DPH, MPH, set out to do a medical study on the weight-loss effects of yoga.
With funding from the National Cancer Institute, Kristal and colleagues at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle led a trial involving 15,500 healthy, middle-aged men and women. All completed a survey recalling their physical activity and their weight between the ages of 45 and 55. Researchers then analyzed the data, teasing out other factors that could influence weight change such as diet or other forms of exercise.
The end result: They found yoga could indeed help people shed pounds, or at least keep them from gaining weight.
“Those practicing yoga who were overweight to start with lost about 5 pounds during the same time period those not practicing yoga gained 14 pounds,” says Kristal.
For the study, he says, practicing yoga was defined as at least one 30-minute session per week for four or more years.
Kristal says it’s not clear just how yoga might help people keep off the pounds, at least from a scientific standpoint. His own opinion is that the effects are subtle, and related to yoga’s mind-body aspects.
“The buzzword here is mindfulness — the ability to observe what is happening internally in a non-reactive fashion,” he says. “That is what helps change the relationship of mind to body, and eventually to food and eating.”

How Often Should You Do Yoga To Lose Weight
Practice yoga as often as possible in order to lose weight. You can do a more active, intense practice at least three to five times per week for at least one hour.
On the other days, balance out your practice with a more relaxing, gentle class. Hatha, yin, and restorative yoga classes are great options.
If youre a beginner, start slowly and gradually build up your practice. This allows you to build up your strength and flexibility and prevent injuries. If you dont have time for a full class on certain days, do a self-practice for at least 20 minutes. Allow yourself one full day of rest each week.
Combine your yoga practice with activities such as walking, cycling, or swimming for added cardiovascular benefits.
As part of your routine, avoid weighing yourself directly after a yoga class, especially if its a hot yoga class, since you may lose water weight during the class. Instead, weigh yourself at the same time each day.
Here are a few yoga poses you can do at home if you dont have time for a full session.
Does Yoga Help You Lose Weight
As part of a regular exercise routine, yoga can help you lose weight, but it isn’t necessarily the best method for everyone.
“When it comes to weight loss, you’re gonna burn calories doing yoga, and so, it will help,” Chesworth says. “But I wouldn’t necessarily say if you’re trying to lose weight that yoga is the golden bullet.”
In addition to the mental health benefits of yoga, the practice can increase flexibility, strengthen and tone muscles, and enhance mobility.
Note: If you’re already physically active, adding yoga to your exercise routine two or three times a week could help with your weight loss goals, Chesworth says. And if you’re just starting out, you can aim for once a week and build up from there.
The type of yoga you do also plays a role in weight loss, Johnson says. Some of the more physically demanding styles of yoga, like Vinyasa or Bikram incorporate postures that are more aerobic and weight-bearing, meaning they burn more calories and build more muscle than other types of yoga, and may lead to faster weight loss.
Even just a few weeks of regular yoga practice can lead to health benefits and weight loss. For example, a 2013 study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine showed a 10-day yoga program resulted in weight loss and a reduced risk of heart disease in overweight men. The men in the study had a body mass index of 26 or greater and lost an average of 1.9 kg of weight.
