This one may be obvious, but it’s worth mentioning because, hey, you may not have been able to touch your toes or connect your hands behind your back before practicing yoga. But being able to do that isn’t the only benefit to getting bendy.
Because yoga has a ton of postures that are performed to improve flexibility and build muscular strength, it also retrains our deep connective tissue, says Emilie Perz, a yoga movement therapist and teacher in Los Angeles. “Stress and anxiety can leave our tissues tired, tight, and stuck,” she explains. ” yoga focuses on whole body movement and awareness, so we can often use the poses to release and lengthen these chronically tight regions.”
Not only does this mean more flexibility on the outside, but you can also retrain how your body’s tissues hold together, Perz adds. The way to do that is with a consistent practice. “From more mobility to better posture, the poses themselves are a potent tonic that wakes our bodies up and moves them more freely through space,” she says.

Youre Taking Classes That Are Too Advanced Or Too Intense
Classes that are above your level or ones that are too rigorous can cause you to overdo it and risk injury, Bell says.
If youre a yoga novice, find an entry-level class in whatever style youre interested in doing, suggests Bell. Many classes with descriptions like core power yoga or power vinyasa are intermediate or advanced in level, he says. Vinyasa means movement paired with breath, and it’s often taught at a faster pace.
If youre younger and healthier, youll probably have greater ease in adapting and enjoying some of the more physically demanding styles of yoga, but even in that case its a good idea to start with a beginner-level class, he says.
Also consider your fitness level. If youre at a lower fitness level or if age or a health issue limits your physical abilities, look for a class at a pace that feels right for you and isn’t too strenuous, says Bell.
How Often Should I Do Yoga On The Mat
Honestly, the major factor as to how often you should do yoga is your goal. Is yoga simply a part of your weekly workout schedule? Perhaps youre a beginner starting a home yoga practice? Are you aiming for strength or improving flexibility? Perhaps if you are intermediate or advanced then working towards a particular pose might be a goal. Are you simply looking to reduce stress and anxiety?
Regardless of your goal, the more you do yoga the more youll improve. Consistency in physical practice is key to gaining strength, flexibility, or improvement in balance or health. In general, Id advise that a good frequency for physical yoga practice is 3-5 times a week.
Having said that, its perfectly ok to do yoga once a week. If thats all the time you have. Something is better than nothing. And remember that the practice does NOT have to be a full hour-long practice. Find ways to work yoga into your schedule.

Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean you have to start doubling up your workouts all the time. On days you have another routine on the schedule, a quick 10-minute flow in the morning could be just what you need to get your body in prime condition, Perz says.

The Art Of Slowing Down
Not long into the January challenge, I was hooked and found myself looking forward to the classes more and more — and working my schedule around them to make time. In early January 2020, I was in Las Vegas for CES — an annual consumer electronics conference where companies showcase the latest tech. I didn’t bring a yoga mat with me, instead spreading out a towel on the floor of my casino hotel room as a welcome break from the long workdays.
Soon, January came to a close, but I kept doing Mishler’s videos. While the new-video-every-day thing had ended, she curated month-long calendars of her existing classes for February through December, including new videos every Sunday.
I stopped going to the yoga studio in early March due to the pandemic, but I kept up with Yoga with Adriene. Her videos helped me take a step back when I was feeling burned out by everything happening in the world, especially her focus on belly breathing, or diaphragmatic breathing.
She even dedicates whole videos to the concept. “Lower stress levels and reduce blood pressure with deep, diaphragmatic breathing, also known as belly breathing,” she teases in the text description of a 28-minute video called “Yoga Belly.” I don’t know about all that , but even the simple act of focusing on my breath as I moved through Mishler’s videos left me feeling calmer than when I started, even on days when I wasn’t stressed.

Practicing Yoga May Improve Your Posture
Poor posture? It’s fixable, we promise. If you find yourself slouching all the time, you can work on training your muscles to help you stand up straighter. This may be especially useful for people who work in offices, hunched over their computers all day long. According to a 2015 study published in the Journal of Physical Therapy Science, yoga, in particular, can help to improve your posture.
The researchers looked at 56 women, 24 of whom self-reported practicing hatha yoga at home with the yoga exercise sets provided to them as part of the study. Six of the women practiced yoga once or twice a week, and 18 practiced yoga three to five times per week. Additionally, 93 percent of the women attended 90-minute hatha yoga classes once per week for a total of 20 weeks. And they were better for it!
The results of the study suggest a “statistically significant increase of spine flexibility.” Interestingly, “age and practicing yoga postures at home had no effect on the changes.” All said and done, these women were better able to touch their toes and more comfortably stand up straight. Oh, and they shed some excess weight in the process.
