My First Hot Yoga Class

My first lesson was a beginner’s yoga class and despite being a completely different pace to other exercise classes I had done in the past, something just felt really good about it.

It was a group lesson so I could feed off the energy in the room but at the same time it felt solitary in a good way. Everyone was focused on their own movements and what they needed to do. This felt like the exact equilibrium I had been searching for.

The instructor was super energetic and motivating, and didn’t make me feel awkward when she came to correct my form, and although the room was hot and you do sweat a lot, I didn’t feel like one sixty minute lesson pushed me past the point where it was no longer enjoyable. I signed up that very same day.

How Often Should You Do Yoga To Lose Weight

Practice yoga as often as possible in order to lose weight. You can do a more active, intense practice at least three to five times per week for at least one hour.

On the other days, balance out your practice with a more relaxing, gentle class. Hatha, yin, and restorative yoga classes are great options.

If youre a beginner, start slowly and gradually build up your practice. This allows you to build up your strength and flexibility and prevent injuries. If you dont have time for a full class on certain days, do a self-practice for at least 20 minutes. Allow yourself one full day of rest each week.

Combine your yoga practice with activities such as walking, cycling, or swimming for added cardiovascular benefits.

As part of your routine, avoid weighing yourself directly after a yoga class, especially if its a hot yoga class, since you may lose water weight during the class. Instead, weigh yourself at the same time each day.

Here are a few yoga poses you can do at home if you dont have time for a full session.

I Lost 40+ Pounds Practicing Hot Yoga

When I stepped foot into my first Bikram Yoga class I was nearly 200 pounds, I drank heavily, ate bad food and was heading down a path far from where I am today. I had been practicing vinyasa flow yoga for a year and was running a few times a week. I wasnt losing any weight.

I would like to say that my goal when I walked into that Bikram yoga studio was about enlightenment, self-betterment, increased flexibility and mental clarity. I wanted to lose weight, plain and simple and I wanted to look good.

To be honest I wasnt sure it was possible. I have a big bone structure. I inherited the Dahl metabolism. I told myself everything that I could to reinforce being overweight. In addition, I genuinely thought the food I was eating was relatively healthy. I rarely cooked and when I did I relied heavily on butter, cheese, carbohydrates and red meat to make a meal. Sometimes my vegetable for the meal was a sautéed onion.

My love affair the 26 hatha yoga postures that makes up Bikram yoga was rocky. You can read more about that here.

But despite not loving the practice at first, I kept showing up for class because after all I wanted to look good! For the first year I practiced about three times a week. The following year it was closer to five to six times a week. And slowly the weight started to come off. My body transformed from soft and inflexible to strong and bendy.

I regained the vitality I was losing under the layers of fat.

I lost the weight and gained back my life.

Does Yoga Help You Lose Weight

As part of a regular exercise routine, yoga can help you lose weight, but it isn’t necessarily the best method for everyone.

“When it comes to weight loss, you’re gonna burn calories doing yoga, and so, it will help,” Chesworth says. “But I wouldn’t necessarily say if you’re trying to lose weight that yoga is the golden bullet.”

In addition to the mental health benefits of yoga, the practice can increase flexibility, strengthen and tone muscles, and enhance mobility.

Note: If you’re already physically active, adding yoga to your exercise routine two or three times a week could help with your weight loss goals, Chesworth says. And if you’re just starting out, you can aim for once a week and build up from there.

The type of yoga you do also plays a role in weight loss, Johnson says. Some of the more physically demanding styles of yoga, like Vinyasa or Bikram incorporate postures that are more aerobic and weight-bearing, meaning they burn more calories and build more muscle than other types of yoga, and may lead to faster weight loss.

Even just a few weeks of regular yoga practice can lead to health benefits and weight loss. For example, a 2013 study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine showed a 10-day yoga program resulted in weight loss and a reduced risk of heart disease in overweight men. The men in the study had a body mass index of 26 or greater and lost an average of 1.9 kg of weight.

Why Is Hot Yoga Bad For Weight Loss

Is hot yoga really safe for you and for weight loss? Hot yoga contributes to some modest increases in strength, muscle control and a considerable improvement in balance. In most cases, there is also a slight drop in body weight. When one is in the Bikram studio, he/she feels like they are putting in a lot of work and then expects better hot yoga weight loss results. The loss of water through sweating gives a false sense that a lot is being achieved even when it is not the case .

Despite the increased heart rate as a result of the high temperatures and intense poses in a Bikram studio, the metabolic rate or amount of calories burned in a session are roughly equivalent to those of a person walking briskly. This means hot yoga weight loss and toning is not particularly different from other exercises.

Humidity should be maintained at 40 percent in hot yoga studios, but that is not always the case. If the humidity is not set right, the heart will be working more to cool you off, and you will be sweating out minerals like potassium and sodium. Sweating out those minerals and replacing them with water alone may lead to scary health risks.

The Higher Heart Rate And Exercise Intensity Are Some Of The Bikram Hot Yoga Benefits

Pin on Bikram Yoga

It is all about the heat. This type of yoga is usually practiced in a room at 40°C for 90 minutes. It is an intense workout just like other flowing types of yoga such as Power yoga, Ashtanga, and Vinyasa. While the heat and the posture difficulty makes you perceive the exercise as more intense, the workouts practiced during hot classes are not necessarily going to make you burn more calories than other yoga styles. One of the most powerful Bikram hot yoga benefits for weight loss lies in the increased heart rate. When working out in the heat, our heart pumps a very large amount of blood to our skin cells, doing their job producing sweat to regulate our body temperature. Practicing this yoga style is a challenge in itself and the muscle that gets the best training will be your heart. And this is always a good thing, especially for those looking to lose weight.Main point: The Bikram hot yoga benefits for weight loss do not come from the perceived workout intensity compared to other yoga styles. The most powerful fact is the heat that is making your heart beat faster. A better heart workout has many proven advantages for fat loss.

Can You Lose Weight Doing Bikram Yoga Every Day

Related

Taking a Bikram yoga class in a hot studio will likely cause you to sweat heavily, but adopting this exercise as your primary weight-loss workout can also cause the pounds to melt away. As with any exercise you perform in an attempt to lose weight, the weight you’ll lose depends on such factors as how frequently you perform the activity, the number of calories you consume daily and your overall lifestyle.

What Is Bikram Yoga

Bikram Yoga is done in a room with the heat level at about 105 degrees Fahrenheit . Including 26 different postures, stretches and various breathing exercises, they are all meant to improve your strength and overall health. Yoga is known for improving your balance, coordination and flexibility, all of which is achieved more efficiently with the increased temperature.

Ups Your Lung Capacity

Although you might have the notion that the stifling room conditions of hot yoga make it hard to breathe, the fact is that breathing exercises in such conditions actually help train your lungs to retain more air. Having deeper breaths forces your lungs to expand more than usual, and in the process, more oxygen is absorbed into the bloodstream and circulated to other body organs.

Bikram Hot Yoga Classes For Detoxification Of The Body

Bikram hot yoga benefits for weight loss are numerous and detoxification of the body is one of them. Intense physical activity in a heated room increases the metabolic function and the amount of sweat produced by the body. When the body is hot, skin pores open up and sweat is produced continuously to regulate body temperature. When sweat evaporates, the skin, which is the largest organ in the body, will cool off, making the body temperature decrease. The sweating process makes getting rid of some toxins easier. The increased blood flow due to a higher heart rate makes it also a lot faster. The toxins go from the blood through sweat out of the body. It is the case for heavy metals like cadmium, mercury, arsenic, and lead, known to arm the heart, brain, and immune system. The high quantity of sweat going through the pores during Bikram hot yoga classes is responsible for getting rid of some of these toxins. But most toxins are eliminated by the liver and kidneys. Drinking a lot of water before and after your yoga practice ensures that these organs function efficiently. Keeping your skin hydrated is also important and I recommend using coconut oil as a natural moisturizer. Main point: The heat of Bikram yoga courses keep the body hot making the skin cells produce a lot of sweat to help regulate its temperature. By flowing out of the skin pores, sweat takes with it some toxins out of the body. Higher blood flow is responsible for weight loss. Detox is the byproduct.

How Much Water Should You Drink

Wondering how much water you should drink before hot yoga– is it as much as you’d chug during an intense cycling class, for example? If you come to Bikram well-hydrated, you won’t need to drink much during the session, says McBride. Aim to drink up to two liters of water throughout the day. But if you can’t hit those numbers, don’t try to make up for it by chugging right outside the studio. Too much water too quickly might upset your stomach and leave you feeling nauseated in class. Same holds true during practice, so sip when you need to, but don’t overdo it. “Water sloshing around in your stomach doesn’t feel so good,” says McBride. “If you find yourself dehydrated at the start of class, take it easy on the posture.” The goal isn’t to master every pose but rather to listen to your body and take care of yourself.
