Preparing For Your First Hot Yoga Or Pilates Class

5 BIGGEST MISTAKES HOT YOGA TEACHERS MAKE IN CLASS

For many of you your first class will be a very different experience mentally, physically and emotionally. The yoga room will be hot, you are going to get sweaty and might feel uncomfortable at times. Know that everyone else in the room started and felt exactly the same way just ask them!

You will see all shapes, sizes, ages and different abilities please never judge or try and compete, especially with yourself! Every day is different in the hot room. Just try your best, because thats all you can do.

Here Are The Muscular Target Areas For One

Eka Pada Kapotasana is meant to target several muscle groups:

1. The Deep Six Lateral RotatorsThe piriformis, gemellus superior, obturator externus, gemellus inferior, obturator internus, and the quadratus femoris.

This is a muscle group that is tight in many of us and that has a great influence on our ability to externally rotate the femur in the hip joint when seated .

When we practice Pigeon Pose, we come across the deep six lateral rotators in the front leg. If this muscle group is tight, you will struggle to bring your front buttock to the mat.

2. The Hip FlexorsThe rectus femoris of the quadriceps muscle group and the iliacus and psoas.

The hip flexors are a muscle group that gets short and tight due to activity and prolonged inactivity while the hip joint is flexed. So, if most of your day involves sitting, your hip flexors will probably be tight and over time, this will negatively affect your posture.

The psoas is considered to be a store-house of emotional tension, and a chronically tightened psoas will signal your body that youre in danger. This can eventually result in exhausting your adrenal glands and weakening your immune system.

When we practice the One-Legged Pigeon Pose, we come across restriction in the hip flexors in the extended back leg. If your hip flexors are tight, you will struggle to bring the front of your back thigh toward the mat.

How To Practice Yoga

Yoga is typically performed in bare feet on a sticky yoga mat with optional yoga props. The yoga movements and poses require clothes that can stretch and move freely with your body. You can purchase clothing specifically designed for yoga practice, but you can probably put together a comfortable outfit from your existing wardrobe to get started.

Yoga classes may use additional props, the most common being straps, blocks, blankets, and bolsters. You dont need to purchase these right away as you can easily substitute these items with scarves or neckties, a stack of books, and pillows. If you take classes at a yoga studio, they will provide everything that you need.

Hot Yoga: Is It Safe And Can You Lose Weight Doing It

By Kyra Oliver

I have had clients tell me that the idea of practicing yoga sounds great, but doing it in a room that is around 105 degrees for 60-90 minutes? Well, for many that sounds dreadful.

But while sweating enough to water your garden doesnt quite sound like a relaxing afternoon, it can do more than simply provide relaxation. For most, once they try it, they actually fall in love with the practice hence the enormous popularity of hot yoga, also known as Bikram yoga. What does the research say? Lets take a deep look into hot yoga, and see if the benefits match the hype.

How To Become A Certified Bikram Yoga Instructor: Accreditation & Regulation

Regardless of whether you choose a Bikram course or you go for a broader yoga course, if you want to actually teach yoga, youll need a qualification that is both regulated by Ofqual, and accredited by a reputable company, such as REPs, CIMSPA, or Yoga Alliance.

This means that cheap or even free yoga courses that you can find online wont cut it when it comes to starting a new career.

But what do we mean by regulation and accreditation? Allow us to explain!

A regulated course is one that is approved by Ofqual, the Government-run body that is responsible for setting the frameworks for all vocational courses in England.

Ofqual outlines certain criteria for awarding bodies to adhere to, that includes criteria for all vocational, assessments, examinations, and course work.

There are various different awarding bodies out there, but in the health and fitness industry, Focus Awards, Active IQ, YMCA Awards, and NCFE, are some of the most popular.

So, youll want at least one of these logos on the bottom of your course certificate:

Course regulation ensures that the Level 3 course you do with one course provider provides the same standard of knowledge and training that another student might get with a different course provider.

This makes it easy for employers, insurance providers, investors, and even your students, to understand what level of training you have.

But what about accreditation?

What Is Bikram Yoga

Before we explain how to become a Bikram yoga instructor, we thought it would be best to start by clearing up exactly what Bikram is, and how its different to hot yoga.

Bikram yoga first came about in 1973, after it was invented by Bikram Choudhury, an American Yogi who was born in India.

Bikram yoga is a specific type of hot yoga that consists of 26 set poses and 2 breathing exercises – which is why its also known as 26 & 2 yoga.

During a Bikram yoga class, these specific poses and breathing exercises are performed in the same order for every single class, and every class is always exactly 90 minutes long.

Whereas a generic hot yoga class is taught in temperatures varying anywhere between 27°C and 38°C, a Bikram class should always be taught in a room heated to exactly 40°C with 40% humidity.

A 2013 study by Tracy & Hart some of the benefits of Bikram training. The studio had some interesting results:

Yoga subjects exhibited increased deadlift strength, substantially increased lower back/hamstring flexibility, increased shoulder flexibility, and modestly decreased body fat compared with the control group.

As well as the benefits for body strength, balance flexibility, and improving range of motion, Hewett, Cheema, Pumpa & Smith highlighted some further health benefits of Bikram practice.

Bikram yoga may, in some populations, improve glucose tolerance, bone mineral density, blood lipid profile, arterial stiffness, mindfulness, and perceived stress.

To Create Subscription & Live Stream Services

Whos using it: Carrie Owerko, founder of The Playground

Why did you choose it?

My creative partner Jamey Welch and I were busy creating an online subscription learning platform several months before the Covid-19 pandemic. I teach all over the world and wanted to have a way to stay connected to teachers and students. My platform is an ongoing and ever-expanding library of classes and live events. The pandemic simply accelerated our launch. We embraced the idea that perfect is the enemy of the good, and just went for it. The spirit of The Playground is just that: It is about getting in there and diving into the process of a practice that is a discipline infused with PLAY!

How does it work?

Uscreen has various packages depending on your needs. We were interested in the level we chose because, among other things, there was a live stream option. Before our soft launch, I used Zoom to conduct live classes. I knew that was temporary, and we were already working on getting the first iteration of The Playground up and running. Once that was accomplished, we switched to streaming our Live events directly from The Playground. No Zoom needed.

Many landed on the latter, and its resulting in a defining shift in the business and teaching of yoga.

So, how exactly are high-profile teachers making it happen? YJ spoke to ten folks, including Carrie Owerko, Jillian Pransky, and Tracee Stanley, to find out which online platforms theyre leaning on and why, so you can get a snapshot of whats out there, along with some takeaways from their trial runs. Yes, in the last few months, youve probably already been on a class or call via Zoom, which is on the list below, but teachers who are using it on the regular and have discovered, even created, new platforms have some tips and tricks to share. Zoom recommends having at least 2 hosts for groups of over 20, so you might want to consider that if you have a large class.

What Do You Get From Yoga Teacher Training With Sol

A lot depends on what you want to learn and what you intend to do with the knowledge after completion of the training. In many cases, the student is interested in learning for the sake of learning & exploring something new. In a few cases, the student actually wants to begin a profession as a yoga teacher. As with our practice on the mat, our yoga teacher training is designed to help you reach your goals whatever path you choose.

To Host Online Courses Or Trainings

Whos using it: Jivana Heyman, founder of Accessible Yoga

    Why did you pick it?

I chose Kajabi for my first-ever Accessible Yoga online training because its a learning management system that offers lots of tools in one integrated package. I really like that it has a very clean and organized user experience so that the online training experience is easy and accessible. It also has lots of marketing and website building tools, as well as a vibrant community of users.

    How does it work?

Its a very substantial tool for building all kinds of online businesses, but most often its used for online schools and courses. It houses all our needs in one place: mailing lists, marketing email pipelines, special offers, and support for online learning with the ability to track students progress through a course, as well as assessments.

What should teachers keep in mind?

This system may be too big and expensive for someone who is only offering public classes. But if youre offering online teacher training, this could be a great tool for you. Its not a streaming service, so we also need to use Zoom to stream the classes and then well upload the videos to the platform.

    What are the upsides?

Any challenges to watch out for?

Well, offering online teacher training is new to me, so Im just figuring it all out now! It has a monthly fee, so there is a substantial investment and consideration about paying the monthly fees for a long time if I want to keep growing on this platform.

Things You Need To Know Before Trying Hot Yoga

Colleges In Indianapolis: How To Become A Yoga Teacher

    The sweat just. doesnt. stop.

Though hot yoga can be a great way to kick your yoga practice up a notch , for most people, downward-dogging in 115-degree heat seems intimidating AF. But before you swear off this awesome workout because youre not a hot weather person, there are a few things you should know.

Hot power vinyasa instructor Loren Bassett and Cedric X. Bryant, Ph.D., FACSM, American Council of Exercise chief science officer, gave us their top tips for staying safeand slip-freewhen practicing hot yoga.

    1. Begin as a Basic Yoga B*tchIf youre new to yoga, look for a beginner workshop or start with a private session to nail down proper form, recommends Bassett. Since practicing in the heat is an extra challenge in itself, you dont want to walk into class unsure of whether you need to modify a pose or use props, she says.

When youre ready to try a hot class, look for a bikram or beginner vinyasa classeven if youre in great shape, says Bassett. Bikram involves more standing poses and is less intense than vinyasa, so it will be easier to deal with the heat.

    2. Give Your Doc a Heads-upSince yoga studios considered hot might be anywhere from 85 to 113 degrees, theyre not ideal if you have certain health issues. If you have diabetes or a cardiac condition, you should check in with your doc before trying a class, says Bryant.

How Do You Become A Certified Yoga Instructor

Hot Yoga Teacher Training with Fire Shaper

This depends on what kind of instructor certification you would like to receive. If youre looking for yoga instructor certification from Yoga Alliance, then you will want to do your yoga teacher training program with a registered yoga school or the Yoga Alliance. It is not necessary to get your instructor certification from YA, though, as its just a private organization that is not connected to any government requirements to teach yoga.

Otherwise, look for a yoga school that has a long-standing good reputation and join their 200-hour yoga teacher training program. This will cover all of the basic knowledge of yoga, such as yoga philosophy, the history of yoga, the Yoga Sutras, teaching methodology, human anatomy and physiology, and the yoga postures.
