To understand how becoming a yoga teacher has evolved from years of apprenticeship to month-long training, we need to look at yogas evolution in the last century. During the first half of the 20th century, two critical shifts happened: Yoga became more focused on asanas physical practice. Over the same period, this new physical yoga made its way to the West, gaining fast-growing popularity.

To respond to the increasing demand for yoga teachers, yoga schools started appearing worldwide, and programs were developed to mass-produce yoga instructors. In the 1990s, a group of instructors began to discuss the need to establish a national standard for yoga instructor training, and from this, Yoga Alliance US was born.

Today, the typical path to becoming a yoga instructor is to follow a 200 or 500-hour yoga teacher training with a reputed yoga school. Remember Kids Are Not Mini Adults

Their little bodies and expanding minds obviously differ from a grown adult. And whilst most adults want to attend a yoga class, this may not always be the case with children.

Often it is the parents idea to send their child to attend a class, and some children may arrive tired, hungry or struggling with personal issues. And whereas adults repress their feelings, children do not.

This can make it tricky to hold a class together. Be patient, compassionate and find something positive to highlight about their practice.

It is also a good idea to have other activities available to fit each students need. Offer them the option to participate by observation or maybe color a mandala instead. Remember yoga can be more than physical asanas.

Create Clear Behavior Expectations

Small children need to know how you want them to behave. Knowing allows them to feel confident and increases the likelihood of participation. To set expectations try simply repeating the same statements as you start class each time. If you make a practice of reminding kids that, In yoga, we sit criss-cross apple sauce on our yoga mats, and during class a child gets off his or her mat, you can simply ask, where do our bodies belong during yoga class? Question asking jogs the memory and helps bring the child back with kind inquiry. He or she will think, Oh yea, we sit on our yoga mats, and not, I am bad because I left my mat. The latter of the two thoughts can be the unintended result of a teacher getting mad when children make normal mistakes. Remember that children are dealing with constant distractors such as bodily sensations, sounds from inside or outside the classroom, seeing toys, etcetera, and therefore distraction is to be expected. Children should not be reprimanded for their mind wandering, but kindly redirected to the proper behaviors that have been clearly set. The goal of yoga and mindfulness after all, isnt to never become distracted its to return from distraction to attention with kind curiosity.

How Do I Find A Job As An Instructor

Many fitness facilities and community centers will hire newly certified yoga instructors, but just e-mailing your resumé is usually not enough to get yourself on the group fitness schedule. Visit local centers and chat with the front-desk staff about the group fitness program. Buy a guest pass and take a class to better understand the population at each center. You may be asked to teach a demonstration class, and its important to think beforehand about what level and style of class will suit the centers participants.

Once you have a feel for a facility, find out who the group fitness director is, and ask to meet briefly with him or her. Inquire about adding your name to the sublist. If the director agrees, ask for permission to observe or take a few classes so you can offer a great experience when your time comes to teach.

New instructors can also propose a series of yoga classes to organizations and communities where they are already involved. For example, you could start a lunchtime class in your workplace, offer an afterschool class to teachers at your kids school or launch a yoga group at your church. Dance studios and martial arts centers may also be interested in adding a yoga class to their schedules, for either kids or parents. In these venues, extensive teaching experience will matter less than the fact that you are part of the community.

Know To Modify Or Direct The Poses And Sequences


In a mixed level class of students over age 50 with many physical problems, especially in ongoing group classes where it is not uncommon to have new students drop in, I recommend starting with simple lying down poses that are generally safe for everyone, yet challenging for more experienced students, such as leg stretches, hip openers and twists. Be sure students with a rounded upper back have adequate support under the head, so their head is level, says Francina.

Challenge: Practice Genshai Toward Yourself

  • Practice saying, I love you just as you are, as you look yourself in the mirror every day
  • When something unexpected happens, pause to notice the quality of your thoughts and words. What are your thoughts and words? Once you take a deep breath or two, invite yourself to try again. Kindly respond to yourself the way you would to your childhood self. What changes?
  • Write down of all the accomplishments you manage throughout the day such as exercising, making it to work, and being kind. Then when something unexpected happens, you can more easily see the big picture of all that you accomplish. Phew! Tailspin averted
  • Compliment yourself for your accomplishments. If you start to talk down about yourself, stop! Refer back to number 2
  • Its important to see all people as whole beings right now. Seeing children as flawed does not honor their greatness. Children should feel safe to make mistakes and exhibit a wide range of behaviors in your presence without our judgment or belittlement. In a kids yoga setting, participation will look different for all children. Be prepared to welcome a range of participation and behavior. Here are a few tips that I offer in my teacher training.

    What Size Class Is Best For Your Livestream Yoga Classes

    Small group classes work best for kids yoga online. This allows you to get to know the children and interact for more of an in-person experience. You can also give them an opportunity to speak at the right time, share their ideas and even be leaders.

    Yet, bigger can also be better. If you have a large class, for example, you have less room for interaction. But, you can take this opportunity to stick with your teaching plan and keep going in more of a follow-along way. For large classes, setting the ground rules before your class is important to keep things under control.

    Regardless of the size of your virtual yoga, take a few minutes to set expectations for the class. Keep your verbal instructions to a minimum and use easy to follow words. Once you begin the class, hand gestures like give me a thumbs up if you hear me or thumbs up if you can see me ok? work well.

    One more tip: Use a lot of space and make big movements for yoga poses to help kids follow you easily!

    Loosely Follow The Structure Of A Traditional Yoga Sequence

    By this I mean structure your class with a hill format in terms of energy use. Start slow, build up to a peak, then come back down to calmer levels.

    I do this for my kinder, 1st, and 3rd-grade classes because they come to me before lunch. After lunch, the 4th graders are too tired and need more activity right at the beginning to get them going. And 2nd graders are super wound up after the long day of sitting so they also need to move right away.

    For young yogis, practicing the same flows over and over again may sound tedious. Changing poses has its benefits. But for seniors, changing the poses and flows too often may be confusing.

    Also, with age comes age decline. Repeating poses help them to learn the poses and to develop the mind and body connection. To keep your classes not boring, change the sequence of the postures.
