Tip #5 Try Removing The Chemical Layer
Towels may be a quick fix, but if youre determined to keep the mat you bought and you want a permanent fix, then try this method of removing the outer chemical finish.
Youll remember some yoga mats have this chemical layer to protect against knocks and scrapes, but the layer creates a slippery surface which can obviously be quite annoying.
Removing this layer can be trial and error, but this is one way of achieving it.
Use some organic soap to thoroughly clean the mat exterior, then use some apple cider vinegar, mixed with water and use a towel to apply the mix, by rubbing it into the protective layer. Try this as many times as needed, before rubbing the mat dry.
Don’t Do Hot Yoga All The Time
If you’re the kind of person that gets really sweaty even after a few minutes or if you’re so worried about slipping you forget to focus on the class, try a type of yoga that isn’t heated to make it a bit easier.
No matter what you do, moving in a hot, humid environment means you can’t avoid slipping and sliding 100 percent of the time. So if you can’t seem to maintain control during class, try a cooler environment for your practice instead. You’ll still get the same benefits for your body and mind.

How Can You Prevent Mat Movement On Carpets
Here are several things that you can put in place to prevent your mat moving on carpet:
1. Choose a mat with a non-slip rubber backing
A non-slip rubber backing may not eliminate mat movement on a carpet, especially if the carpet pile is on the thicker side. It will, however, help to prevent the mat from slipping underfoot and help to reduce the amount of movement that occurs.
2. Choose a mat with a gripper or claw type backing
With some types of mat, you will get to choose whether it comes with a flat backing or a gripper/claw/cleated backing. If you are placing your mat on a carpet, select gripper backing. The grippers on the back of the mat will help the mat to grip on to the carpet pile, to prevent the mat from moving and creeping.
How effective a gripper backing is will depend on the length and thickness of the carpet pile. If the carpet is particularly plush, the only answer may to be use an underlay
3. Use a non-skid underlay underneath the mat
If your mat still moves with a non-slip gripper backing, the next step is to try non-skid underlay, which can be cut to size and placed between the mat and the carpet.
This is a relatively inexpensive solution and, more often than not, an effective one. Make sure that you cut the underlay at least 5cm / 2 inches shorter than the total size of the mat to ensure that the edges of your mat dont lift, which can cause a trip hazard.
Invest In A Quality Yoga Mat
Ever heard the saying you get what you pay for? Take it from someone who has bought too many cheap mats in the past paying more for a quality mat is TOTALLY worth it. Not only will last so much longer, but youll avoid the headaches of slipping. My personal favorite is the Manduka Pro and ProLite. For me, this immediately stopped any slipping on a yoga mat I experienced. I also have friends that swear by Jade mats. These brands produce mats that give you more grip than a cheap $15 mat from Target.
Manduka mats need seasoning before use. And any new mat typically takes some wearing in. Just like new shoes. If you have a good mat, then its possible its slipping due to the residue from your bodies natural oils. Not to mention body lotions! Its good to give your mat a clean every few months. If upgrading your mat isnt in the budget anytime soon, then lets look at other things you can try for your mat.

Silicone Caulking Or Hot Glue
If you search online for How to Keep Rugs from Sliding you may find recommendations for using silicone caulking or hot glue on the bottom of rugs. The adhesive is applied to the bottom of the rug, then allowed to dry completely. The dried glue is grippy, keeping the rug in place. However, its risky to put anything adhesive on the bottom of your rug. It can pull at the fibers, damaging the rug. And when walked on repeatedly, the dried glue or caulking can leave a residue on your flooring.
Now that weve walked through some of the most common ways to keep your rug from sliding, you can rest assured knowing that your new rug will stay in place.
Do Yoga Mats Work On Carpet
Yes, yoga mats DO work very well on carpet. While theyre designed to be grippy on the bottom to stick to hard floors, that doesnt affect how well it works on carpet. in fact, it can actually help your yoga mat stay in place on your carpet even better.
There are some differences though
Its important to note that when performing yoga on a carpeted floor, theres more movement due to the extra give of the carpet and underlying padding.
This means cheap yoga mats may be more subject to tearing if made from foam and other weaker materials.
With that said, we chose yoga mats which are high quality and built to last so you wont run into any problems.
Another important note is that since you do have this extra padding on the carpet, you also may not need as thick of a yoga mat even if you have sensitive joints.
With that in mind, lets check out the yoga mats

How Often Do I Need To Replace My Yoga Mat
Once you find your yoga mat, it wont last forever. If you practice regularly, your yoga mat should be replaced every 6-12 months. There are things to look for as your mat wears down that will tell you when it is time to replace your mat.
- You find pieces of it on the floor. If your mat is leaving bits of itself on the floor as you roll it up after your yoga practice, it is probably time to buy a new one.
- Your mat has become uneven. This can affect your balance and cause depressions in your mat from your hands and feet pressing into the mat.
- Your mat is losing traction. If your feet or hands begin to slip in poses when they dont normally, your mat may be wearing out.
- It smells bad, even though you clean it regularly. If your yoga mat begins to retain bad odors even after cleaning, it is time to replace it.
- You are sore after using it. You know best how your body feels after your yoga workout. If you develop new aches and pains from your normal practice, the cushion may be wearing from your mat.
Yoga can mean different things to different people. I use yoga as a form of exercise and I combine yoga with meditation to help manage my stress. When I began my yoga journey, I felt frustrated that I couldnt do the poses my instructor or friends could do with ease.

What To Use Instead Of A Yoga Mat Seven Clever Alternatives
Have you been wondering what to use instead of a yoga mat? Just because a game requires particular types of mats doesnt mean that you have to invest in that particular gear.
There are loads of DIY and alternatives you can use to substitute for some yoga mat.
Whether or not you are a newcomer, you do not have the budget, or if youre only on the go and require a simple fix, we will show you a few distinct techniques you can use.
How Can You Keep Yourself From Slipping On The Yoga Mat
Another common issue you may experience while practicing yoga is slipping on your mat in poses like downward dog or warrior pose. Sweat can drip down onto your mat causing your hands and feet to slip as you move into poses that require a good amount of stability and balance.
One of the most effective options to combat slipping on the mat is investing in a yoga towel, especially if you practice Bikram yoga or hot yoga. Spray a light layer of water on your mat before laying your towel down. This will ensure a non-slip surface for your hands and feet.
If you already have microfiber towels, you can try them first using the same method you would for a yoga towel. I have tried some interesting methods to keep myself from slipping on a yoga mat, all with varying degrees of success.
I sprayed my hands and feet with hairspray to make them tacky, but forgot about it and rubbed my eyes. That was unpleasant. I even tried brushing cornstarch on my mat, thinking it would absorb any moisture that made me slip, but I wouldnt recommend that either. A yoga towel has worked best.
You can try switching to a rubber mat. It will provide a better grip if your hands and feet tend to sweat during your practice.
You may also not have proper alignment in your poses. Try going to a yoga class or working one-on-one with an instructor to make sure that isnt the issue.

Opt For A Quality Mat
There are many yoga mats specifically designed to stay in place when you exercise. There are also different accessories you can place on your yoga mat to keep it in place.
Some of these accessories include strips of hook-and-eye-type material that sticks to carpet and squares of vinyl-type material which are designed to stick to shiny surfaces like hardwood and tile floors. You can get any of These products at most sports and recreation stores.
What Is The Difference Between A Yoga Towel And A Regular Towel
When first starting out with yoga, it can all seem a little overwhelmingwhat products will you need, what products will you want, what products arent really worth the investment?
With so many questions in mind, its common to see someone new to the practice bring a regular shower or beach towel into the hot room to spread out over their mat. Essentially, they work in the same way, but maybe not as well.
Regular cotton towels are a little softer and more pliable than yoga mat towels. While mat towels do feel soft underneath your hands and feet, the material itself is a bit stiffer and more durable than that of a towel you would use to dry off with.
This means it will hold up better in a heated room, and its less likely to move around underneath you as you practice.
Mat towels are also much more absorbent than regular towels for the beach or shower. While these do a great job of drying you off, they arent sweat wicking. This makes a huge difference when sweat is actively dripping onto your mat!
Particularly in a heated room, you might be surprised by how much you actually sweat during class.
For many peoplethough it depends on how much you sweata regular cotton towel will easily get soaked through.
When the cotton towel is soaked with sweat, youll end up with nothing more than a soppy mess covering your mat. It wont absorb any more sweat, and because its soaking, it wont really help keep you from slipping either.

Make Sure Mattress Topper Or Bed Frame Isnt Root Of The Problem
Often people buy a mattress topper that is way too small for their bed. This gives a lot of space and is prone to slipping that can irritate every one of us.
Try to buy a mattress topper thats perfect for your bed, or you can try to fill the space with some materials or anything that you like to get rid of sliding.
Theres also a chance that your mattress or bed frame has become old.
Clean the mattress topper or bed frame thoroughly.
If any of them are more than five years old, it is time to buy a new one because all these solutions can soon wither out due to the decrease in the quality of the mattress or bed frame.
