Create A Room To Practice In

How to Start Yoga at Home For Beginners – Helpful Bites

I recommend creating a relaxing space at home to use as a dedicated yoga room.;;

From personal experience, having a particular room at home to practice in increases your motivation to practice every day. It also makes it far easier because your mat, blocks and other items are all there ready to go without faffing around.

There Are Many Styles Of Yoga

If youre scrolling through what seems like an endless list of classes, all with titles that mean nothing to you , Howe has a few tips to ease your selection stress. Think of the reasons you want to start your practice, she says. If youve never tried yoga before, maybe avoid the Power/Ashtanga type classes and Bikram . Get to know how your body feels in a regular temperature class, she suggests. When in doubt, Try many different styles, many different instructors, Howe says. Youll know what works best for you. Theres something for everyone or a style or flavor for every day of the week. After all, theres even face yoga.

What You Need To Buy To Start Practicing Yoga

What you wear is really important. Youll need comfortable clothing that you can move in, whether its yoga pants or running shorts. You may already own something, or you may need to buy new clothes. New clothes can range from $5 to $100 or more, so choose an option that fits into your budget and that you feel most comfortable in.

Yoga mat: Many people choose to purchase their own mat rather than borrow or rent at a local studio, which can range from $2 to $10. Prices for your own mat can range from $15 to $200. And you get what you pay for, so we suggest aiming for a quality mat thats in the $40 to $60 range.

Props and other gear: Most yoga studios will supply all of the other props you may need, like yoga blocks, straps, and blankets. Some may even provide bolsters, sandbags, and eye pillows. If youre practicing at home, you dont have to buy these props, either. Owning a mat, a set of blocks, and a strap can help support and ease you into your practice, but you can use the carpet as your mat, household items as blocks, and towels as straps, too.

Learn Basic Yoga Poses

Once you feel ready for the physical side of your yoga practice, you can start to mindfully experiment with yoga poses for beginners.

There is no need to try to jump into the more complex poses or to try to be as bendy as the person next to you.

In fact, you can begin your practice right at home with free yoga videos.

Wherever you begin, whether in a local yoga studio or with an online yoga video, there are a few basics to start with.

Start with postures, or yoga asanas, such as downward-facing dog, child’s pose, and savasana.

In each pose, focus on pressing your hands or feet into the floor, lengthening your spine, and relaxing your hips. If you keep this in mind as you practice, you will be working with each pose exactly as even the most devoted practitioners do.

Follow Your Bodys Lead

If youre used to following a particular sequence or type of class, just once a week;close your laptop or book,;get on your mat and do your own thing. This can feel really daunting at first but ignore that nagging worry that you wont know what to do; yoga doesnt need to be a seamlessly structured series of poses. Just get on your mat and wriggle around for five minutes doing what feels nice for your body, or perhaps just sit quietly.

Build up to it by adding your freeform practice at the end of a shorter online class or sequence. Just pause the video before Savasana and restart it when youre done if you prefer to be guided. Any time that you take to tune in to truly listen to your body and let;it;lead the way, rather than your mind, is yoga.

Props For Home Yoga Practice

So, the first prop to get is you guessed it a yoga mat! You need one that allows a good grip because the last thing you want is your hands sliding away from under you. When it comes to mat thickness, it depends on your knees and back if theres no issue, you can choose a thinner mat; if you need more padding, go for a thicker one!

Another prop thats good to have is a yoga block or two. Nothing fancy, just plain blocks that allow you to reach the floor when you cant quite get low enough with your hands. They are also useful for putting under your butt when sitting cross-legged or kneeling, and sitting on your heels.;

A yoga strap is handy, too, but its not a must-have. It can be substituted by a belt or a non-stretchy scarf. A strap can help you get the pose right if your range of motion and/or flexibility is limited. To avoid straining and bending your body out of shape, a strap can bridge the gap between your hands and feet so you can keep the correct alignment.

Mindfulness And Meditation Exercises

Both mindfulness and meditation are integral parts of the yoga practice. As mentioned earlier, physical yoga practices aim to prepare the body and mind for meditation.

There are two simple elements that define mindfulness:

  • Become aware of the physical sensations in your body.
  • Notice these sensations without judgment.
  • Below is a simple, mindful counting meditation that you can practice at home:

    Meditation technique

  • Find a comfortable seat.
  • Set a timer for how long youd like to meditate for, somewhere between 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Close your eyes.
  • Notice the sounds around you. Listen as they come and go.
  • Bring your awareness to your physical body. Can you notice the temperature of your skin? Can you notice whats touching your skin?
  • Focus the awareness from your head and move down to your feet. Which parts of your body are harder to notice? Which parts of your body are easier?
  • Bring your awareness to your breath. Notice the cool air as you breathe in and the warm air as you breathe out.
  • Start to count your breath. Inhale on 1 and exhale on 2.
  • Continue counting all the way up to 10. Repeat until the end of your meditation.

    5 Easy Steps to Start Practicing Yoga at Home

    Comfort is key during yoga, so find something that makes you feel good and allows you to move freely through the poses.;

    “Avoid clothes with zips or fastenings so you can lie comfortably on your back or stomach during class,” Alana advises.;

    You should also avoid clothing thats too loose. You dont want to find yourself adjusting and moving things around while youre in your yoga practice. Avoid wearing a baggy shirt or sweater as it will end up irritating you by falling in your face during downward dog, which can also disrupt your breathing, Rebecca says.;

    Instead opt for fitted leggings , a comfortable sports bra, and a breathable sports top. You should also remove socks or shoes for your practice to give you a better grip on the mat.;

    What Does Yoga Work

    One of the greatest benefits of yoga is that it can provide a low-impact, total-body workout. Some poses help increase the strength and flexibility of your arms, shoulders, back, abdominals and core, hips, glutes, and legs.

    In yoga, you are using your bodyweight to build strength, tone muscles, and increase your flexibility, explains Brodie. This practice is phenomenal for core strength. With a strong core comes the improvement of posture and reduction of injuries.

    Building core strength by breathing into and out of each pose helps support the spine, which encourages good posture, adds Howe. When we stand tall, not only does that affect our joints, it affects our self-esteem. We feel uplifted.

    Starting Yoga At Home Vs Studio For Beginners

    Here are some of the benefits of practising at home VS at a studio, in my experience.

    • More time to practice
    • Less risk of embarrassment
    • Great way to relax at home
    • You get to do your routine at home, unlike in a studio class
    • Pauses to catch your breath in yoga whenever you need to!
    • Go at your own pace

    One of the risks for beginners doing yoga and meditation at home is that you are more likely to injure yourself. In a class, the teacher can spot if you are out of alignment. If you do practice at home, go slow and always make sure you are comfortable.

    When practising yoga and meditation at home, less is often more.

    The absolute worst thing is to end up with an injury because youve been practising a pose incorrectly. Thats why I recommend that you read a few high-quality books before starting, and to only ever do poses you are comfortable with. Yes, Formidable Face Pose looks fantastic, but if you try it as a beginner, you will probably end up with a spinal injury. Be safe guys!

    What If I’m Not Flexible Enough For Yoga

    Yoga is known for being totally inclusive and accepting of all abilities, shapes and sizes. It doesn’t matter if you’re a slighter-than-slight ultra-runner or a seven-foot second-row rugby player. The benefits are abound, so all you have to do is commit to regular classes you’ll notice results even going only twice a week and the rest will come quick-sharp.

    “We spend too much time in our minds trying to intellectualise the value of the things we dont know. Is it worth our time? Will I like it? Will I be good at it?” says Wong, when asked for his best advice for getting a beginner into yoga. “Just start, and the yoga practice will do the rest. I guarantee your questions and concerns will be way less and way different after class instead of before.”

    Why You Should Practice Yoga

    Yoga Medicine instructor based in San Diego, California. You can follow her journey at

    We live in a culture where our minds and nervous systems are stimulated constantly. Yoga offers the space to slow your mind down and restore a sense of balance. In 2016, Yoga Journal and Yoga Alliance conducted a study called Yoga in America. They found that 36.7 million people were practicing yoga. Thats a 50 percent increase from 2012!

    Its unclear what the direct cause is for this booming growth and rise in the popularity of yoga, but such interest may be attributed to the promising benefits that yoga and mindful practices offer.

    Furthering Good Practice Habits For Yoga

    Advanced practitioners usually practice four to six times per week. At this stage, we also recommend expanding the range of your practice to include both active and restorative asana, pranayama, and meditation. If it appeals to you, mudra and mantra can also be a way to add richness to your practice.

    The style and duration of practice will vary depending on what you feel you need the most that day. At this stage, your ability to maintain focus on your breathing and internal states throughout practice allows you to quickly tap into the depth of your practice. This means a shorter practice can be just as potent.

    You can still enjoy practicing regularly with a teacher or with a class. But youll also want to commit to practicing at home in a dedicated space, such as a corner of your living room or bedroom.

    Some advanced yogis practice at home a majority of the time. Others maintain a more even balance between home practice and public group classes. As you progress, this will become a matter of your personal preference.
