Why Is Kundalini Yoga Considered To Be Dangerous
Kundalini Yoga is in fact a very powerful path within the spiritual system of Tantra that can catapult a practitioner to the next realm of evolution and spiritual development. It is the crème de la crème in terms of powerful techniques and practices that are both obscure and secret to non-initiates.
However, it is fair to say that practicing Kundalini Yoga before a practitioner is ready and has taken the necessary steps to prepare his or her mind, subtle energetic bodies, and spirit can be quite dangerous. A genuine teacher will caution practitioners and not seduce them to stretch their practice beyond their capacity. The efficiency of the Kundalini Yoga techniques is exactly both the catalyst for the powerful effects in fact, the practice is said to defeat all illnesses and even death in the original texts and may potentially be the source of the negative effects for unprepared initiates.
The danger is due to the exponential accumulation of energy or intense pranic friction which can have destructive results at the physical, astral, and mental levels if a practitioner is not prepared. For example, a blood vessel may burst in the brain, a schism could arise in the personality, even energy may not be directed as expected, such as by descending instead of rising. All disturbing reactions should be considered warning signs that lead teachers need to reassess practitioners fitness for kundalini practice.

Kundalini Energy In Different Traditions
Egypt
In Egypt, the awakened Kundalini energy, rising to the center of the head, was symbolically depicted as a snake on the headdress of the Pharaoh. During ancient times, the Pharaoh was presented as being enlightened, an advanced personality on the path of the spirit, and a wise and benevolent ruler.
China
In China, the sage who managed to fully awaken Kundalini energy and took control of it was depicted as a man riding a dragon. This is how Bodhisattva Quan Yin is depicted in some paintings.
India
In India, the degree of awakening of Kundalini energy is symbolized by the number of cobras rising above the head of yogi. The number of cobras indicates the number of already awakened Kundalini layers. Sometimes you can see a statue of a meditating yogi with one, three or even five cobras above his head. However, it is rare to see an image of seven cobras. Seven cobras symbolize a soul that has reached a very high level of development, for example, a great spiritual teacher.
In the Indian tradition, Shiva represents spiritual energy and Shakti, symbolizing female power, which represents kundalini.
Christianity
Europe
A comparative study of different traditions will help you understand spiritual truths from a universal point of view, not just from the point of view of one culture. These examples show that the truth is universal. And spiritual truths do not belong to any culture or religion.
On Wearing White In Kundalini Class
A traditional Kundalini yoga class, if photographed from above, would look like a sea of albino ants swarming a hill. It looks like your typical stereotype of a cult, but actually its the opposite. Kundalini yoga supports its practitioners wearing all white, so people come to classes in white head coverings, skirts, shirts, and flowing white pants. As Yogi Bhajan said, Colors create an uncontrollable action in your subconscious mind of inspiration, productivity, and expansion. Colors have an effect on consciousness. We wanted to develop a very fast, progressive, spiritual, and technical method of all the colors, so we have adopted the one color of the seven colors, which is white.
We in the west basically wouldnt have any idea or access to Kundalini yoga if it werent for Yogi Bhajan.
Born Harbhajan Singh Khalsa, in Kot Harkan, India, to a Sikh medical doctor father, and a Catholic educated Hindu mother, his fairly wealthy family owned much of the property in their village and served as landlords. At that time, and the centuries prior, the practices and techniques of Kundalini yoga were passed down in a very secretive, elitist way from teacher to well-selected student. Yogi Bhajan received these teachings firsthand and mastered them by the age of 16 ½.
After having a spiritual vision in his travels to Los Angeles, he knew clearly that what the western world needed was Kundalini yoga.

What Does Kundalini Mean
In Sanskrit, kundalini means coiled snake. In early Eastern religion, it was believed that divine energy was created at the base of the spine. Its energy we are born with, and Kundalini works to uncoil the snake and connect us to this divine energy within.
In its early creation, Kundalini was a study of the science of energy and spiritual philosophy, and in ancient times, royalty would sit with Kundalini Masters to hear the ancient scientific teachings of Kundalini and spiritual visions. Yogi Bhajan, originally named Harbhajan Singh Khalsa Yogiji, is credited with bringing Kundalini to our Western culture.

How Does One Activate Kundalini Shakti

Kundalini shakti cannot be turned off and on, as though today it is off and tomorrow it will be fully turned on and activated with the flip of a switch. This supreme power acts with a functionality more akin to a dimmer light switch, whereby the cosmic force is incrementally turned on and activated slowly to allow for harmonious integration and assimilation into the multi-structured energetic system and subtle bodies of the practitioner.
At advanced stages a state of enlightenment may be reached a state technically called samadhi in Yoga. In this pivotal moment a practitioner becomes one with all of creation, transcending duality and the clutches of karma as well as emerging as his or her own guru.

Is Kundalini Yoga Dangerous
Some people fear Kundalini Yoga more than other types of yoga due to its ability to “awaken” emotions such as depression and anxiety. According to others, practicing can even potentially lead to a psychotic breakdown or otherwise mimic a mental illness.
Research indicates that these types of negative side effects can be reduced by practicing under the guidance of a Kundalini Yoga expert. Additionally, certain precautions and preparations may need to be made to create a positive experience.
If you are concerned about Kundalini Yoga’s potential effects on your mental health, speak to your doctor, counselor, or therapist before beginning this practice.

Start To Focus On Your Breath
Notice your breathing and gradually start to slow it down. Your goal will be for one round of inhaling and exhaling to last about seven to eight seconds. Break your inhale and exhale into segments, such that you do short inhales or exhales broken up by pauses.
Aim to do this so that there are four segments of both inhales and exhales during a complete breath. Breath through your nose the entire time. If you feel dizzy at any point, then stop the practice.

I am curious to see how this practice integrates and effects my life as I continue with the program.
Thank you, what a wonderful class. You radiate such calm and peace, and I could feel the same after this lovely practice. I ended this practice with a huge pure and true smile ! 🙂
Hi Dawn,Ive recently started this course and have found the first lesson to be very powerful and exactly what Ive been searching for. I have just one question…are the chakra Kriyas in the following lessons meant to be practiced on their own, just as you present them, or should they always be preceded by the breathing and warm up exercises you taught us in the first lesson?
In reply to Hi Dawn, by Mesteño
I have not been able to get to my real life kundalini yoga class, and have noticed the effects. Feeling so cold, achy, and uninspired. Thank you so much Dawn for sharing this beautiful class here. Sat nam!
