- If you dont have any clean spots, take a space that you feel is sacred and clean it up a bit! Keep in mind that it doesnt have to be a large area.
If this is the beginning of your yoga journey, we recommend investing in a yoga mat. You can use substitutes around your home for other yoga gear. For example, you can use a belt in replacement of a yoga strap. To replace yoga blocks, you can use a couple of sturdy throw pillows!
When youre first starting off with your home yoga practice, make sure youre setting realistic goals for yourself. This helps avoid disappointment, and most importantly, injury.

Where Should I Do Yoga At Home
Anywhere you can lay your mat can be a home practice space. Ideally, try to go into a room where you can close the door to minimise distractions. Turn off your phone ringer and prepare to focus only on your practice for the time youve allotted. Realistically, if you are at home with a family, you might not get the uninterrupted time you would prefer so be flexible or try to include older children. Even a little mat time is better than none.

Starting your practice like this is an excellent way to warm up and feel out your body. Feel the tightness, the cracks, and go as slow as you likeafter all, this is your practice. As a practitioner of Ashtanga Yoga primarily, I love the self-led nature of a Mysore practice within a group environment. But, it is not possible for me at this time to practice in a shala setting consistently, so here are some tools that have helped me in my home practice of Ashtanga and Vinyasa Yoga.
Which Yoga Poses Should You Do
Some;styles of yoga follow a set sequence of specific poses, but many instructors, including Yee, recommend a more open-ended approach, especially when you’re doing yoga at home.

Be creative and spontaneous. If you approach your practice with a sense of curiosity, rather than self-judgment or competitiveness, you will find it easier to motivate yourself to practice and you’ll be more present when you do practice.”
