Use Basic And Beginning Level Postures

How To Start A Daily Home Yoga Practice (Even If You Are A Beginner)

Make sure you have read our General Practice Guidelines before attempting any yoga poses. Start with one of our warm-up sequences and then try one of our basic yoga pose sequences and/or these simple postures: seated twist, cat, dog, down dog, child, cobra, mountain, triangle, forward bend. Then check out our list of best poses for beginners and explore our Yoga Pose section to find additional poses to add to your practice. It is best to add new poses very slowly.

Watch Out For The 3 Ps

Always honour your bodys boundaries and avoid;pain,;pinching;and;pushing. If youre new to yoga it might be difficult to distinguish between pain and discomfort. Pain feels hot and sharp, whereas discomfort is more of a dull, nagging sensation. Generally speaking, STOP if its;inside;the joint structure ;If you do feel pain, move gently rather than suddenly out of the pose. If you feel discomfort, perhaps you can soften or adjust or even use props to assist you.;

Its always advisable to;warm up;properly before attempting advanced poses and be especially mindful of the transitions between poses.

Stick With A Set Sequence

Practicing the same poses every day repeatedly is a powerful way to keep consistent with your practice. This repetition offers you a clear vantage point from which to watch yourself grow and change. The nature and sequencing of Ashtanga Yoga offers this beautifully. You dont have to think about what pose you want to do next, so instead you can focus on your breath, bandhas and drishti. This takes you into a deeper meditative and focused place, so that you will step off your mat feeling more present and peaceful.

What Kind Of Props Do We Need To Have At Home For A Restorative Yoga Session

The Easiest Way To Yoga (Hint: At Home) in 2020

Restorative Yoga is an incredibly beneficial tool, especially for busy, stressed, or very active people. On our 4-day Restorative Yoga Course at Byron Yoga Retreat Centre we teach participants how to use an abundance of blankets and bolsters to correctly set up positions to support their bodies to allow them to fully relax in each pose. While there is an abundance of websites and shops selling a myriad of yoga props, you can always just make do with soft furnishings you have at home.

If you are practicing some Restorative poses at home, you can use any blankets or cushions you have around the house and adapt by rolling or folding them to meet the needs. You dont even need a yoga mat! You could use a blanket, a rug, or just a carpet as your base. If you choose to, then I would say the number one prop to invest in is a yoga bolster. This will make it easier for you to set up for and be properly supported in key Restorative poses.

One of the most beneficial Restorative poses is legs up the wall. You simply set yourself up at right angles to a wall, torso on the ground, sit bones up against or close to the wall, and as the name suggests legs up the wall! All you need for this pose is a blanket to lie on and a wall.

Whats The Best Music To Do Yoga To

London-based Rocket yoga teacher and ex-DJ Marcus Veda says its all about linking the beat to the breath: Optimal yogic breath is calm, slow and controlled, aiming to increase focus and regulate the nervous system. But people tend towards shorter, erratic breath, so having a beat can be invaluable as a constant reminder to bring your breath back to.

His formula is specific: I link the movement and breath to a specially mixed soundtrack, to a beat that keeps breaths at under 10 per minute, but not so slow that the yogi feels stressed or short of breath: 69 beats per minute is the golden tempo all my mixes come back to that. If youre creating your own playlist, Veda recommends artists such as Petit Biscuit, Jon Hopkins, Nils Frahm and James Blake or, for ease, choose a mix from his Soundcloud.

What Style Of Yoga Is Best For A Home Practice

Theres no need to choose one style for a home practice, just try to assess what your body needs that day. Are you looking for a stretch after a heavy week of working out; to ease fatigue after a week of nine-to-five desk sitting and screen time; to calm anxiety and stress; or an uplift in lieu of caffeine?

The joy of yoga at home is that you can select your favourite elements of a few different styles; or choose an online class or app to guide you through . If youre practising without a teacher, start with a short simple routine like a sun salutation A or B to help you memorise it, and practise ad infinitum.

Are 15 Minutes Of Yoga A Day Enough

10 Simple Tips For Practicing Yoga At Home

Yes! Depending on where you are in your yoga journey, 15 minutes may feel like a lot to you, or it may feel like just a quick stretch. It also depends on if youre doing 15 minutes of basic yoga poses or holding a challenging pose for 15 minutes.

I practice about 15 minutes a day because it makes the practice more approachable to me. If Im staring down a 60-minute yoga practice that I have no motivation to do, I probably wont do it.

But if its just 15 minutes, its easy for me to get on the mat. Plus, if Im feeling good during my practice, then I can keep going!

Traditionally, ancient yogis spend hours practicing yoga, and 15 minutes would hardly be a drop in the proverbial bucket.

Beginner yogis, though, should just do the amount that they feel most comfortable with. There is no right amount of time for you to practice yoga each day. The best length of time is the amount of time that you can commit to.

Why A Home Practice Is Important For Beginners

The growing demands on our lives in conjunction with technologys ability to make us accessible 24/7 can leave us feeling overwhelmed and chronically stressed.

Yoga is a mind-body practice that supports slowing down and taking time to tune into the breath amidst the chaos of our lives. This slowing down process triggers the parasympathetic nervous system, otherwise known as the relaxation response, and runs directly counter to the fight-flight-freeze response so commonly associated with chronic stress. Additionally, yoga helps to cultivate cardiovascular strength, flexibility, and stamina. If you are a new student interested in starting a yoga practice to dial down the stress or are just attracted to the multitude of benefits that yoga has to offer, starting your yoga practice at home can be simple with the use of online yoga videos. Other streaming sites are out there. New students should look for an online streaming service that offers a variety of styles, especially classes that are tailored to the beginner. Along with finding the right online service, here are 5 easy steps for how to start yoga at home for beginners.

What Advice Can You Give Us To Embrace Our Yoga Practice From Home And Not Lose Motivation While In Lockdown

Practicing in the same room each time reinforces a connection with Yoga within the home environment, so create a dedicated space for Yoga practice. Tune into nature and beauty even in a tiny space you can light a candle, burn incense, have fresh flowers or shells from the beach for example. This sets the tone for practice and helps to activate the parasympathetic nervous system .

Rise a little earlier each morning and start the day with meditation, movement, or conscious breathing . You will most likely feel brighter, more positive, and have increased energy, vitality, and focus. If you are not a morning person, find a time that works for you and put it in your diary protect that time in your day.

Society, in general, is very goal-oriented, and sometimes we carry this through to our Yoga practice, hoping to attain the perfect posture or feeling that we have somehow failed to practice properly if we are short on time. When we lose our routine, we can be hard on ourselves and it can be difficult to find the motivation to start again. My advice is to prioritize doing a little every day, even if some days that means you only have time to sit and take a few conscious breaths or contemplate gratitude for a couple of minutes. The very act of making contact with your mat and moving into the present moment will make it easier to practice again the following day.

Setting up a;home yoga practice is only half the battle now you have to roll out your mat and do it.

“The best advice I can give you,” says Yee, “is to make your yoga part of your morning ritual. This means getting to bed 15 minutes earlier so your yoga practice does not cut into your sleep time. The second piece of advice is to sit down with your weekly calendar and begin to cross out any activity that is not serving you anymore .

But in this interview clip from the intro to his;A.M. Yoga for Your Week DVD, Yee says the real key to staying motivated to keep doing yoga at home gets back to listening to yourself and exploring what you need with a sense of curiosity and creativity.

“Another significant way to support your home practice,” Yee adds, “is to practice with a member of your family or a friend. Being held accountable by others can get you to the mat on the dreariest of days. Once you get to the mat, the magic often takes over after a couple of minutes, and you find yourself vibrating with the music of yoga.”
