How To Use Exercise To Balance Hormones

As you can probably tell, getting your hormones back to good or optimum levels is a balancing act. “While intense workouts improve your body chemistry, including levels of HGH and testosterone, you have to keep cortisol in check,” explains Rivett. A HIIT class after a stressful day at work is probably the last thing you need. A typical workout week needs to be structured correctly to impact all the hormones positively, Rivett tells me.

High-intensity training can be used to your advantage, increasing beneficial hormones. “Types of exercises with different impact and intensity have shown to increase more of certain hormones. There is data that shows that high-intensity training or resistant training helps improve the production of testosterone, which helps with building and maintaining lean muscle mass,” adds Lee.

Steady-state exercise has its merits as well, particularly when it comes to mood regulation; Lee explains: “Cardio such as speed walking and running can increase overall dopamine and serotonin for an overall sense of calm for better night sleep and even just mood elevation.;People have reported sleeping better after a good walk throughout the day.”

When hormones are unbalanced and symptoms develop, you will need to consult with an endocrinologist or other specialist. After a thorough history and physical exam, an endocrinologist will probably order blood work to test your hormone levels. Medications are available to restore hormone levels or treat the symptoms caused by abnormal hormone levels.

If you have symptoms or signs of an endocrine disorder, self-treating may allow the condition to worsen. These recommendations on balancing your hormones are intended to reduce your risk for endocrine-related disorders, not to self-treat symptoms.

Cobra Pose Or Bhujangasana

Yoga for hormonal balance in females stimulates the function of the ovary and is one of the best exercises you can perform.

How To Do It:

  • Begin by lying on the floor face down. Take your forehead to your mat and have your legs completely straightened out.
  • Place your hands on the mat in line with your ribs.
  • Inhale and press through your palms and slowly lift your head and chest off the mat.
  • If your lower back is open, press up until you have just a slight bend in the elbow.;
  • Make sure you can keep your shoulder down your back and away from your ears.;
  • Hold for 5 breaths and then slowly release.
  • Repeat the asana for 5 rounds.
  • Practice This Detox Yoga Position

While a regular yoga practice going to a class or simply stretching at home can improve numerous aspects of health, there is one particular yoga pose that I believe offers a profound ability to balance hormones naturally. Its called Legs Up The Wall, which describes it pretty accurately! Heres a picture to show you what the pose looks like it is suitable for every body type and fitness level.

In this pose, lymphatic circulation in the lower body is maximized. As the garbage disposal of the body, the lymphatic system collects and carries lymphatic fluid so the toxins in this fluid can be eliminated from the body. Unlike the cardiovascular system, the lymphatic system doesnt have a pump and relies on our movements and gravity to circulate lymph fluid.

When we sit all day, the lymph fluid becomes stagnant and toxins collect. To balance hormones naturally, we need to eliminate these from the body and keep the lymph flowing. By reversing the flow of gravity in your legs, you circulate the lymphatic fluid and encourage the elimination of toxins.

    How To Balance Ghrelin Levels

If you have a sneaking suspicion your ghrelin levels are in need of some TLC, here are a couple of ways to balance them:

    • Eat adequate amounts of protein. Protein helps you feel full and should be consumed with every meal. Studies show how eating protein promotes healthy ghrelin levels.
    • Avoid sugar as much as possible. As you can see by now, consuming too much sugar disrupts hormonal balance, making weight loss seem an impossible feat. Be sure to read labels. If an item contains high-fructose corn syrup, dont buy it. A 2013 study published in Nutritional Diabetes shows how high-fructose corn syrup is one of the primary culprits of imbalance when it comes to hormones and weight gain.

    Risk Factors And Causes

Yoga for PCOS – Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome I Hormonal Imbalance I Irregular Periods

Hormonal imbalances are multi-factorial disorders, meaning they are caused by a combination of factors such as your diet, medical history, genetics, stress levels and exposure to toxins from your environment.

Some of the major contributors to hormonal imbalances include:

    • Food allergies and gut issues: An expanding field of new research shows that your gut health plays a significant role in hormone regulation. If you have leaky gut syndrome or a lack of beneficial;probiotic;bacteria lining your intestinal wall, youre more susceptible to hormonal problems, including diabetes and obesity. Thats because inflammation usually stems from your gut and then impacts nearly every aspect of your health.
    • Being overweight or obese
    • High amounts of stress, and a lack of enough sleep and rest

Adrenal dysfunction is the largest cause of the hormonal imbalance with the sex hormones especially because of something called the cortisol steal.

This occurs when cholesterol, which usually helps to make the sex hormones, combines with too much stress and the enzyme 17/20 lyase blocks the conversion; the production of cortisol ensues. Cortisol then causes the imbalance of progesterone, estrogen and testosterone, which then decreases the sex drive.

It seems like, every day, the advice from the medical community about healthy aging changes. For example, our bodies need cholesterol, so, you may want to see if your doctor can recommend a natural approach to your cholesterol management plan. Eggs, for example, are a wonderful source of healthy cholesterol. Just dont forget to eat both the white and the yoke to get the right balance of nutrients.

An important vitamin that may help to keep our hormones in balance after 60 is B6. This is found in walnuts, lean red meat, poultry, spinach and beans. Personally, Im a fan of supplements, but, Julie reminds us that, where possible, its best to get your nutrients naturally. Another nutrient to consider is zinc, which is found in dark chocolate.

At the end of the day, everyones body is different, but, dont be afraid to have a conversation with your doctor about dealing with your hormones after 60. There are plenty of natural ways to bring your body back into balance.

    Boycott Soy For Hormone Balance

    Did you know that soy:

    • Disrupts hormones by looking like;estrogen to the body
    • ;May cause inflammation and leaky gut by inhibiting trypsin, a protein-digesting enzyme
    • ;Is most likely genetically modified

Soy milk, soy meat, soy protein, soy-based cereal all these foods touted as healthy wreak havoc on the body. The Weston A. Price foundation has also collected and summarized a list of studies showing the toxic effects of soy consumption on hormone balance and general health.

Fermented soy, such as miso and tempeh, have the detrimental effects reduced, but I believe these should be only eaten in strict moderation. If you are currently trying to balance hormones, I strongly recommend avoiding even fermented soy.

    Be Wary Of Dairy Products

    Natural Skin Care & Supplements

Dairy is an important source of nutrients for many people. However, females concerned about levels of reproductive hormones may wish to use caution, especially before consuming cream or yogurt.

A 2017 study notes that eating dairy can reduce levels of some protective hormones.

In addition, the authors point to an association between eating cream and yogurt and missing ovulation. The link is unclear, and the researchers call for further studies.

Hormones You Can Balance Using Exercise

Like a conductor of an orchestra, your hormones are your bodys chemical messengers. They are responsible for orchestrating a variety of bodily functions, including getting a good nights sleep and maintaining a normal menstrual cycle.

When hormones are out of balance , people often look to diet and supplements to bring them back to their optimal levels. After all, certain foods, such as those high in sugar, can trigger elevated levels of certain hormones, like insulinthe hormone that directs cells to store blood sugar for energy. But your workout routine can also be a tipping point for hormone regulation and is often overlooked way to keep them balanced.

Exercise is one of the ways we can communicate to our body and to our endocrine systemthe glands around the body that are responsible for secreting our hormones at the correct levels, explains Erica Zellner, MS, health coach at Parsley Health Los Angeles. Some of the hormones that are influenced by exercise include insulin, cortisol, estrogen, testosterone, human growth hormones and progesterone. Because movement has such a powerful impact on hormones, Parsley Health doctors and health coaches use it to understand how its affecting a members hormones and make exercise recommendations for hormone balancing.

    How To Balance Hormones Naturally

    1. Swap Carbs for Healthy Fats

Foods that balance hormones include a variety of fat-containing foods that provide short, medium and long-chain fatty acids. Your body needs various types of fats to create hormones, including saturated fat and cholesterol.

Not only are these essential fats fundamental building blocks for hormone production, but they keep inflammation levels low,;boost;your metabolism and promote weight loss.

Healthy fats have the opposite effect of refined carbohydrates, which lead to inflammation and can mess with the balance of your hormones.

My four favorite sources of anti-inflammatory,;healthy fats include:

    • coconut oil, avocados, grass-fed butter and wild-caught salmon.
    • Coconut oil uses are plentiful for example, coconut oil has natural anti-bacterial and fat-burning effects.
    • Avocado benefits;include improving heart health, lowering inflammation, controlling your appetite and contributing to your daily intake of fiber and nutrients such as potassium.
    • Salmon nutrition;is also impressive: its one of the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to lower inflammation and help with cognitive functions. Omega-3 fatty acids are a large component of brain-cell membranes and are important for cell-to-cell communication in the brain.;Research shows that omega-3 fatty acids help protect against hippocampal neuronal loss and reduce pro-inflammatory responses.

    2. Supplement to Fill Nutritional Voids

    3. Address Emotional Imbalances

    6. Get More Sleep

Use Gelatin To Improve Hormone Balance

Gelatin;and;collagen hydrolysate, available here,;contain a unique profile of healthful amino acids that help balance hormones by complimenting the amino acids we obtain from meat. Ive discussed the health benefits of gelatin in-depth here, but heres a quick overview.

Dr. Ray Peat, a hormonal researcher in the field of nutrition and metabolism, describes why muscle meats when consumed without gelatin throw the metabolism out of balance:

When only the muscle meats are eaten, the amino acid balance entering our blood stream is the same as that produced by extreme stress, when cortisol excess causes our muscles to be broken down to provide energy and material for repair. The formation of serotonin is increased by the excess tryptophan in muscle, and serotonin stimulates the formation of more cortisol, while the tryptophan itself, along with the excess muscle-derived cysteine, suppresses the thyroid function.

If a person eats a large serving of meat, its probably helpful to have 5 or 10 grams of gelatin at approximately the same time, so that the amino acids enter the blood stream in balance.

By helping to balance the tryptophan, gelatin supports healthy thyroid function and adequate thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormones work synergistically with all other hormones in the body by supporting our thyroid, we support balanced hormones in general.

Our healthy lifestyle decisions dont need to end with food. Walking, gentle yoga and meditation are great stress reducers. Even getting out into the sun and listening to the birds singing can help your body in amazing ways. Dont forget that our stress hormones play a major role in making us unhappy after 60. They also prevent us from losing weight, which, in turn, stops us from exploring the world.

Menopause: When Estrogen And Progesterone Levels Are No Longer Balanced

Consider the female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone. Before puberty, both hormone levels are low. Puberty is initiated when the hypothalamus releases gonadotropin-releasing hormone . GnRH triggers the release of luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone from the anterior pituitary gland. A synchronized release of LH and FSH regulates the menstrual cycle, the release of an egg from a follicle in the ovary, and the uterine cycle. Throughout a womans reproductive years, these cycles occur on a 21 to 28-day basis.

With aging, fertility wanes as the number of follicles remaining in the ovaries diminishes. Menopause occurs when a womans ovaries no longer have any follicles left, and estrogen production declines. The earliest phase of menopause, perimenopause, is characterized by normal estrogen levels but decreasing progesterone levels. When estrogen levels drop, symptoms develop, such as vaginal dryness and pain, hot flashes and night sweats, mood swings, brain fog, and thinning hair. These symptoms vary by women from mild to severe.

Many women are at the peak of their careers as they enter menopause. Brain fog can negatively impact their work and quality of life.

Were all affected by our hormones in one way or another; however some of us are affected to a much greater degree. One day we feel relaxed, happy and easy-going, the next we feel intolerant, angry and frustrated. Our hormones have a significant impact on our mood and emotions, making us perceive things in very different ways.

Theres a complex process within our body which never sleeps, it is constantly at work, and affects our growth, procreation, moods, energy levels and sleep.; It is called the endocrine system and its workers are known as hormones.

    It is responsible for controlling our fertility through periodic cycles in women and regulating the production of hormones secreted from our glands.;

Hormones are chemical substances, with distinct compounds to induce chain reactions within our bodies.; Specific hormones are released from the adrenals, thyroid, ovaries, pancreas, pituitary, pineal and testes and make their way to target organs via the bloodstream.; For instance, the thyroid produces thyroid hormones which have a number of metabolic, cardiovascular and developmental effects on the body; it is basically our metabolism manager.
