I live in the Deep South in a mid size city, and while there are Yoga classes here, I have never been able to find a Yoga class for beginners, and I felt awkward in a class of pros, so I never went back. I felt like I was interrupting their practice with my lack of skill. I just finished your Foundation and Flexibility video and I feel fantastic. How To Start A Daily Home Practice
The idea of starting a home practice is liberating, but in reality for most, it rarely becomes a reality. Meaningful intentions with less than desired outcomes. Here are three steps to get you headed in the right direction to begin your at home yoga journey.
First, make an appointment with yourself. Schedule time into your day to practice each day. Treat this as if it were any other important meeting, because you are important. If that time is not scheduled, something always comes up to distract or deter you from making it to your mat. Along with setting aside a specific time, carve out a special place to practice, somewhere you feel comfortable and at ease rolling out your mat. Creating a welcoming environment will inspire you to visit it more often.
Second, make realistic goals for yourself, especially when it comes to how much time to dedicate to your home practice. An hour a day would be wonderful, although in reality it is lucky to have ten minutes to yourself in the day. So, start with 10 ten minutes at first. Once that time becomes a daily habit, you can revisit your goal and increase the amount of time on your mat.
Third, keep it simple. Try to start with sun salutations and poses you know. I recommend starting with standing poses, next seated, then reclining. Always end with Savasana for at least three minutes to allow all that good energy to get absorbed by your body and mind.

Hatha yoga, the most popular type of yoga practiced in the United States, is a promising treatment for people with anxiety. Hatha yoga is an umbrella term for the physical branch of yoga therefore, all types of yoga postures we practice today fall under this category.
Its unclear which aspects of Hatha yoga help alleviate symptoms of anxiety however, scientific hypotheses believe the combination of meditation, breathwork and physical postures help reduce anxiety symptoms.

Their findings were striking. It didnt appear to matter overall how long participants had practiced yoga, but rather the frequency and total time practiced on a regular basis. Home practice, whether comprised of asana, meditation, pranayama, or philosophy was found to be an important predictor of many aspects of health while class attendance was not. Improvements included mindfulness, subjective well-being, fruit/vegetable consumption, and reductions in sleep disturbance, BMI, and fatigue. Those most likely to practice yoga at home were also more likely to practice a broader array of yogic practices and potentially glean a more comprehensive span of benefits.
The results of this study may seem fairly commonsensical. Because it can be challenging to attend yoga classes daily, having a regular home routine established can thwart the standard excuses for not practicing . It also projects a reminder of the importance of yoga practiceand everything that entailsinto the home environment, where many important decisions are made and your habits, for better or worse, reside.

All you really need is a yoga mat, preferably non-slip. The yoga mat market is huge but its worth paying a little more for a good quality mat that suits your needs and will last a long time. Blocks are a great addition but they can be replaced with books and other household things. A bolster is also nice to have, but for years I used a stack of pillows and blankets instead.

I Did 10 Minutes Of Yoga Every Day For A Month And This Is What Happened
For nearly 6 months, all I talked about was doing yoga. “My back hurts when I wake up,” I’d say. Or “God, my posture is terrible!” These exclamations were inevitably followed by “I’m going to try yogamaybe that’ll help.”
But I didn’t. Sure, I talked about doing yoga every day. I even took the opportunity to snag a yoga mat and a few yoga DVDs from a coworker who was cleaning out her office, but I didn’t actually do yoga.
After getting off work at 6:00 PM, taking the hour-and-a-half-long subway ride home, making dinner, eating dinner, doing dishes, and getting myself ready for work the next day, I’d glance at my yoga mat gathering dust in the corner and flop into bed to watch Netflix instead.
Eventually, I got tired of saying the same thing over and over again . So to make myself accountable, I told my editor I’d volunteer to do a whole month of yoga, at least 10 minutes every day, and write about it. I found some online yoga classes to stream and diligently followed along. Here’s what I learned.
I went into this ready for my muscles to scream at me and for my body to yell, “I just can’t bend that way!” Which, to be honest, it sometimes did. But it came as a total shock to me that the hardest part wasn’t trying to stand on one leg while I held my ankle in one hand and pointed toward the wall with the other . It was breathing.

Props For Home Yoga Practice
So, the first prop to get is you guessed it a yoga mat! You need one that allows a good grip because the last thing you want is your hands sliding away from under you. When it comes to mat thickness, it depends on your knees and back if theres no issue, you can choose a thinner mat if you need more padding, go for a thicker one!
Another prop thats good to have is a yoga block or two. Nothing fancy, just plain blocks that allow you to reach the floor when you cant quite get low enough with your hands. They are also useful for putting under your butt when sitting cross-legged or kneeling, and sitting on your heels.
A yoga strap is handy, too, but its not a must-have. It can be substituted by a belt or a non-stretchy scarf. A strap can help you get the pose right if your range of motion and/or flexibility is limited. To avoid straining and bending your body out of shape, a strap can bridge the gap between your hands and feet so you can keep the correct alignment.
