Training The Third Eye

How to Improve Your Eyesight with Yoga | 30 Day New Year Challenge | Day 22

Once students have mastered the basic eyeball exercise, Srinivasan introduces an intermediate series of eye exercises: shifting focus.

While sitting relaxed and still, pick a point in the distance and focus on it. Extend your arm and put your thumb right underneath the point of concentration. Now begin shifting your focus between the tip of your thumb and the faraway point, alternating rhythmically between near and distance vision. Repeat the exercise 10 times, then relax your eyes with palming and deep breathing.

This exercise trains the an organ called the ciliary body, which adjusts the lens of the eye. Habitual focus patterns degrade the ciliary bodys natural flexibility. Shifting focal points exercises the organ, much as we work complementary muscle groups in asana practice.

The final eye asana taught in the Sivananda series stresses close-range focus. Again gaze at your thumb with your arm extended. This time move the thumb slowly toward the tip of your nose. Pause there for one second. Then reverse the sequence, following the thumb with your eyes as you extend your arm again. As before, repeat the sequence 10 times, then relax with palming.

By training the eyes to focus on the ajna chakra a yogi trains his mind to turn inward. On a more prosaic level, close-range focus exercises can forestall the need for reading glasses.

How Yoga Mudras Work

The working of yoga mudras is based on the principle of Pancha Mahabhutas. Pancha Mahabhutas are the 5 vital elements that are represented by the 5 fingers of the hand

In mostly practiced hand yoga mudras, when any of the 5 fingers are joined together it actually combines the respective element of that finger

  • Thumb Fire element responsible for our needs like hunger, thirst, and sleep.
  • Index finger Air element responsible for movement and breath.
  • Middle finger Ether element responsible for inner wisdom, intuition and determines our fears
  • Ring finger Earth element responsible for bodily composition like bones and tissues, flesh and skin, and hair.
  • Little finger Water element responsible for bodily fluids such as saliva, blood, sweat, urine, and semen.
  • When there is an imbalance in these 5 elements, it can result in a disruption in mind and body to experience the ill effects of diseases.

Yoga mudras aim to keep 5 vital elements of the body in balance by joining fingers in the different arrangements .

To understand the working of yoga mudras in a simpler way, consider the human body an electric circuit in which current is flowing through nadis . 5 fingers are like the 5 terminals of a human electric circuit which correspond to a specific part of the body and mind.

The way we arrange fingers in a yoga mudra shows whether it will increase or decrease or balance one of five elements

    Practice Yoga For The Eyes

Yoga too has benefits for the eye, and the yoga poses are very simple. You can try blinking, palming, and rotating the eyeball in different directions. Some experts recommend the following set of exercises, similar to the eye exercises you just did:

    • Try moving your eyeballs up and down without blinking think about looking at a clock in front of you and tracing a line between the 12 and 6.
    • After about 10 repetitions of this exercise, rub the palms of your hands together and cup your eyes so you can feel the warmth seep through this is called palming.
    • You can follow this by moving your eyeballs horizontally, from 9 to 3, and diagonally, from 2 to 7 and 11 to 4. These exercises may help relieve the extra pressure that we put on muscles when looking at nearby objects, like a book or computer screen.12

Yoga For Eyes : A Few Tips On Improving Your Eye Vision

Eyesight Exercise To Better Care For Your Eyes

We have all heard of yoga as a form of exercise to improve our health and mind, but did you know eye yoga can do wonders to our vision too?

Eye yoga enables us to use our eyes to their fullest capability, something which does not occur in our day-to-day life. Whilst many of us are used to looking at a computer screen for at least eight hours a day, and then heading into busy areas with buildings everywhere, our vision becomes limited as a result.

How Can Stress Affect Your Eyes

Stress can affect our minds and bodies in all sorts of ways, however did you know it can have an impact on vision too? The impact of stress on our vision can vary from a mild discomfort, all the way to severe debilitating vision loss. Prolonged and repeated close distance work, which many of us do daily, can cause near-point stress.

    Symptoms of near-point stress include:

    • Eyestrain
    • Eyelid twitching
    • Burning or watery eyes
    • Difficulty concentrating on work that is within our close vision, for example reading, writing and using computers

To Help The Eyes Grow Healthily

But there could be more to it. Another study that looked at the effect of daylight on the rate of eye growth found that the eyes of the children studied grew regularly during the summer but grew too fast during the short winter days in Denmark. This has a bearing on the development of myopia because if the eye grows too long from front to back then you become nearsighted.14

So its possible that spending time outdoors prevents myopia by providing more daylight exposure however, it could also be the result of exercising distance vision where your eyes are focused on objects at a distance.15

    Eye Rotation Clockwise And Anticlockwise

Yoga Techniques To Improve Eyesight Naturally

Clockwise and anti-clockwise rotations of the eyes calm them and protect them against illnesses and ailments. While doing so, keep your elbow straight. Keep your head straight and your eyes on the thumb. Move your thumb clockwise while keeping your attention fixed on it. Repeat this five times, then do it again in the opposite direction five times. Reverse the procedure by moving your sight to the left thumb.

To Reduce Risk For Macular Degeneration

Walking 2 miles a day, three days a week, lowers your risk of macular degeneration by 70 percent.

A large study that looked at the relationship between being physically inactive and age-related macular degeneration a condition where a part of the retina deteriorates and causes loss of vision found that exercising can lower your chance of getting AMD.

After accounting for risk factors like age, weight, and cholesterol levels, it was found that people who walked 2 miles a day, three times a week, had a 70 percent lower chance of developing AMD.9

What Is The Verdict On Exercises

On the Other Hand Animation Show: Exercise Time!

It is important to recognize that even though refractive errors may be hereditary and due to a structural change in the shape and size of the eyeball, cornea and lens, but there may be certain environmental causes at play, such as stress due to prolonged near work, reading and working on computers and other visual display devices. The first component of your refractive error is not amenable to correction by exercises for obvious reasons. The environmental factors such as focusing stress and fatigue may benefit from eye exercises.

It is also imperative to keep in mind the fact that there is no definite scientific research that demonstrates eye exercises can effectively reduce or eliminate refractive errors or decrease your dependence on glasses or contact lenses while improving your eyesight. There is no robust scientific evidence to suggest that these techniques work, which is why your eye doctor and optometrist are never enthusiastic about recommending these exercises for vision correction and prefer for you to try glasses and or contact lenses instead.

    What The Science Says

Theres more science to support the practice of eye yoga than you might expect, though much more research is needed to back up the many claims its supporters make.

Eye yoga involves focusing on objects both close at hand and far away. It also involves moving your eyes from the left, upward, to the right, and downward. These focusing movements and muscle training serve two purposes.

First, tending to small, purposeful movements through any kind of yogic practice calms your body down. Bringing peace to your body through healthy stress coping mechanisms helps treat hypertension, which is linked to glaucoma, headache, and anxiety, all of which can make eye strain and other optical conditions aggravated.

Second, practicing focus may help improve your brains response to the way it interprets what you see, even if your eyes tend to send whats called refraction errors that make images difficult to make out. You might not actually be seeing better, but you might be becoming more attentive to what you see.

That could be why, in one study, no improvement in eyesight could be objectively measured but participants felt like they were seeing more clearly.

Tips On How To Improve Your Eyesight And Vision Naturally

Some will say the eyes are the windows to the soul. To the more science-minded, theyre an incredibly complex organ that gives us the gift of vision. Either way, most of us tend to take our eyes for granted. Just imagine your world if you lost your sight even just reading this passage on this very screen would be impossible, not to mention seeing the expression of a loved one or catching a gorgeous sunrise. Fortunately, several easy ways can help protect our eyes and even improve eyesight naturally.

    Eye Exercises That Work

Eye exercises, including eye yoga, may work to help with eye strain as well as a decrease in stress. Feeling less stress can help you focus better, so while you may not be healing or fixing your eyesight, you may be better able to see and recognize whats going on around you.

You may want to try these exercises on days when you have been looking at a screen for several hours to see if they help relieve discomfort. If you wear contact lenses or glasses, youll want to remove them before trying these exercises.

The answer to this question is best addressed by asking yourself a set of ancillary questions. If the answer to this is affirmative, then yes, eye exercises can cure refractive errors. If eye exercises cannot address the physiological and structural reason for needing glasses for better vision, it stands to reason that their results will be sub-optimal.

  • Can exercising your eyes change the shape of your eyeball, by making it longer or shorter, or changing the dimension of one of the axes of the eyeball sphere ?
  • Can eye exercises change shape and power of your cornea, and result in light being focused precisely on the retina?
  • In case of astigmatism, can the exercises reshape the irregular surface f the eye resulting in precise focusing of light on the retina?
  • Can eye exercises restore the elasticity of the natural lens of the eye that has been lost due to the change in its protein content, thereby alleviating presbyopia?
  • The answers to these questions, objectively and in one word, is NO since the shape and power of the eye cannot be altered with any degree of reproducibility and conviction. The officials at the American Academy of Ophthalmology evaluated all the scientific evidence and published research papers available to address this question and issued this statement in 2004:
