Get Your Yoga Groove Back 12 Tips For A Better Practice

Feeling like your yoga practice has recently plateaued? Take these 12 quick and helpful tips to heart and have a better experience at your next class.

  • Hydrate all day: Drinking water in the middle of your practice can mess with your flow, so arriving hydrated is necessary. Focus on drinking water all day long you’ll be amazed at what a difference it will make.
  • Show up early: Rushing into the studio with a harried mind and no time to chill gets your practice off to a rough start. Allow at least 10 more minutes than you think you’ll need to have plenty of time to change clothes, check in with a cool mind, and sip on some tea, if you can!
  • Dress the part: There’s nothing worse pulling up the waistband of your pants or making sure your top doesn’t spill out of your built-in bra all class long. That’s not where your mind needs to be during your Downward Dog. Wear clothes that are fitted and comfortable, but not so snug that they’re distracting.
  • Grab props: More advanced yogis sometimes shy away from grabbing props, but there’s no harm in keeping them next to your mat. Grab a block, strap, and blanket before you take your seat. You’ll never know when you’ll need one.
  • Be quiet before class: I’m known to chat up a storm with fellow yogis in the moments before class, but do you best to stay quiet and turn inwards. Lay on your back or sit up with your eyes close to connect with yourself and prep for class.

What Are Some Of The Benefits Of Yoga

The power of yoga in the West isn’t totally diminished, though. In fact, yogis keep coming back to their mats because of the practice’s many benefits. Studies show that yoga can improve physical health by lowering blood pressure, reducing the risk of heart disease, and aiding digestion. It may also help practitioners sleep better and manage stress. Not to mention, recent research indicates the mind-body practice supports mental health, specifically one study found regular yoga may help ease depressive symptoms.

Dianne Bondy, yoga teacher and author of Yoga for Everyone: 50 Poses for Every Type of Body, has seen yoga’s positive impact firsthand. Thanks to the practice, her students are able to excel under pressure. Yoga teaches that “when there’s chaos going on around us, we can focus on something singular and bring a sense of peace to ourselves,” Bondy says. “The practice of concentration helps students to be more successful at whatever they do.”

But Is Yoga Actually A Good Workout

HOW TO FIND A GOOD YOGA MAT

“Absolutely!” says Ewing. “A regular yoga practice increases flexibility and strength in your muscles. It has you work your full range of motion in every joint of your body and build strong and long muscles.”

She adds that yoga can help increase circulation, and “the meditative benefits of a complete yoga practice result in a calmer state of mind, which reduces stress and promotes happiness.”

What Class Is Right For Me

There are many styles of yoga classes taught today. Some are very physically challenging and will leave you sweating others are gentle and restorative. Some teachers play music in class others dont. Some classes include references to yoga philosophy and spirituality others dont.

Here are a few types of classes your yoga studio or gym may offer:

Hatha: Most yoga styles being taught in America today are a form of hatha yoga, which is a general term that refers to the physical part of yoga, rather than yoga philosophy or meditation. A Hatha yoga class is likely to be a combination of poses and breathing exercises, but its hard to know whether it will be challenging or gentle. Check with the school or the teacher to find more about the level of classes that are described only as Hatha yoga.

Ashtanga Yoga: This is a challenging style of yoga that is centered around a progressive series of yoga sequences that, traditionally, students practice on their own under the guidance of a teacher. If you think that yoga is not a workout, you havent tried an Ashtanga class. Classes include advanced poses such as arm balances and inversions including headstands and shoulder stands. Beginner students are strongly advised to study with an experienced teacher. Ashtanga classes will also often include teachings in yoga philosophy.

Note: Its a good idea to try several yoga classes. How much you enjoy any class will come down to how much you like the teacher, not how its labeled.

    Build A Mailing List Asap

Step six is to start a mailing list.

Have a way that you can keep in touch with the people who come and probably really enjoy your classes.

To me, this is even more important than most other . It will help keep you top of mind so that when your network needs a yoga teacher, they know to come to you.

What Is The Best Yoga Certification To Get

Yoga Alliance is the most well-known private organization that provides yoga instructor certification, but a YA certification doesnt mean that you received quality training or that you are ready to teach yoga. Of course, it is nice to be able to join the trend of having a YA certification to ensure that you dont miss any opportunities that are tied to this kind of certification, but outside of your local yoga studio, not many others will be asking for a YA certification.

    Get Comfortable In Stillness

Yoga challenge offered for addicts, people in recovery ...

Most of us find it very challenging to sit still.

We would rather run around, keep busy, and check items off our to-do list than just be.

Even when we are chilling out, our hands drum on our knees, our thoughts wander to the past or future, or our eyes hungrily scan an iPhone or T.V. screen.

So before you try to bang out the most advanced yoga poses you can find on the pages of Yoga Journal or Instagram, try the most basic tenets of yoga of all, being present.

The next time you’re waiting in line, riding public transportation, or perching on the toilet, notice the temptation to whip your phone out for distraction.

Try to observe the urge rather than immediately give into it.

Set Specific Goals And Let Them Be Your Motivation

What is the reason that you are trying to get more flexible? Is it because you want to do the splits? Is it because you saw this certain pose and just HAVE to be able to do it? Is it because you want to relieve your lower back pain?

Find your reason, and set that as your goal. Let it motivate you to get on your mat every day and stretch it out.

For me, the biggest goal I have had since starting yoga is to be able to do the splits. I am fairly tall, and VERY inflexible, especially in the hamstrings. I have to work at it EVERY DAY, but I do, because I want to get there and know that I can with practice!

    Yoga Is Not A Religion

For the uninitiated Westerner, there’s a lot about yoga that may appear “religious.” Certainly, there’s a spiritual element to the practice, but it’s essential to understand that yoga itself is not a religion.

“This comes from yoga’s Indian roots where mantras and chants have been used for many years,” says Brad Ormsby of Freedom Genesis, a yoga and meditation blog. “They’re meant to bring focus and help you awaken internally, but they’re not required to practice yoga.”

And even if you decide to join in with the mantras and chants, you’re not “converting to yoga” as if you were converting to a new religion. “There’s a spiritual element that encourages you to connect with a higher power, but it’s non-denominational, so you can do yoga as a practitioner of any religion,” says Christa Fairbrother, a 500-hour RYT and the owner of Bee Content Yoga.

The mind of a perfect man is like a mirror. It grasps nothing. It expects nothing. It reflects but does not hold. Therefore, the perfect man can act without effort. ~Chuang Tzu

First of all, the concept of Beginner’s Mind, approach everything without expectations, applies to ALL practitioners regardless of how many days or years you have studied and practiced yoga. The mind likes to stay active, even during resthence the nickname “monkey mind.”

We all confront hundreds of daily distractions that zap our focus from the NOW and transport us into “busyness” as usual.

Yoga reminds us to breathe, carrying us away from the monkey mind and back to the tranquil mothership of peace that exists right here, in the present, at the center of the self. Therefore, all yogis consider themselves beginners in this practice.

And, just by showing up on the mat consistently, we arrive at the big realization that with nothing to perfect the practice, it simply teaches the art of “BE-ing.”

Equipment Youll Need Before You Get Started

Both our experts agree that yoga doesnt require much equipment, and most studios will have everything you need. But, in case you want to practice at home, If you have access to a towel or a mat, you are good to go, says Brodie. With that said, if you have the desire and means to purchase a few of your own props, Brodie has some advice. Blocks can help accommodate you and help you to achieve poses at your flexibility level by basically bringing the floor up to you, she says. Yoga straps help with stretching, alignment, and posture. There are also yoga wheels, which help with backbends, shoulder stretches, and balance.

Do Crossfit Or Boot Camp To Condition Your Body And Mind

Anything we do repeatedly risks becoming routine, and if we do them mindlessly, an overuse injury is inevitable. Changing up your fitness repertoire isnt only great for your body, but also for your brain.

CrossFit and similar boot camp-style workouts involve training the body through multiple exercises within one workout period. People go between weight training, isometric work, and cardio drills, which require the muscles and brain to recalibrate each time one switches modalities.

Even simply changing the hand with which we do an activity will exercise the brain in new ways. Since yoga is the ultimate form of mental conditioning, it in turn helps athletes stay sharp and alert when trying other styles of fitness.

Yoga teaches us how to balance. Literally, like standing on one foot, and more generally, like not doing too much of any one thing. So, not only will your whole body benefit by adding in other fitness modalities, but your whole life will too!

    Improves Flexibility And Balance

Many people add yoga to their fitness routine to improve flexibility and balance.

There is considerable research that backs this benefit, demonstrating that it can optimize performance through the use of specific poses that target flexibility and balance.

A recent study looked at the impact of 10 weeks of yoga on 26 male college athletes. Doing yoga significantly increased several measures of flexibility and balance, compared to the control group .

Another study assigned 66 elderly participants to either practice yoga or calisthenics, a type of body weight exercise.

After one year, total flexibility of the yoga group increased by nearly four times that of the calisthenics group .

A 2013 study also found that practicing yoga could help improve balance and mobility in older adults .

Practicing just 1530 minutes of yoga each day could make a big difference for those looking to enhance performance by increasing flexibility and balance.

Summary: Research shows that practicing yoga can help improve balance and increase flexibility.

How Long Will I Have To Hold The Poses

This depends on the type of yoga class you takefor example, a slow flow or hatha class may require you to hold a pose for an extended period of time. But in vinyasa, “it comes down to the intention of how the posture was designed,” says Ewing. “For example, balancing poses are held longer to benefit concentration and focus, while transition postures build strength while teaching fluidity in movement.”

For the most part, though, poses are held for three to five breaths during the first round to help them sink into your memory. Then they’re held for a single breath when you repeat the pose, to help amp up the cardio component of yoga.
