What Class Is Right For Me
There are many styles of yoga classes taught today. Some are very physically challenging and will leave you sweating others are gentle and restorative. Some teachers play music in class others dont. Some classes include references to yoga philosophy and spirituality others dont.
Here are a few types of classes your yoga studio or gym may offer:
Hatha: Most yoga styles being taught in America today are a form of hatha yoga, which is a general term that refers to the physical part of yoga, rather than yoga philosophy or meditation. A Hatha yoga class is likely to be a combination of poses and breathing exercises, but its hard to know whether it will be challenging or gentle. Check with the school or the teacher to find more about the level of classes that are described only as Hatha yoga.
Ashtanga Yoga: This is a challenging style of yoga that is centered around a progressive series of yoga sequences that, traditionally, students practice on their own under the guidance of a teacher. If you think that yoga is not a workout, you havent tried an Ashtanga class. Classes include advanced poses such as arm balances and inversions including headstands and shoulder stands. Yoga Alliance is the most well-known private organization that provides yoga instructor certification, but a YA certification doesnt mean that you received quality training or that you are ready to teach yoga. Of course, it is nice to be able to join the trend of having a YA certification to ensure that you dont miss any opportunities that are tied to this kind of certification, but outside of your local yoga studio, not many others will be asking for a YA certification.
Get Comfortable In Stillness
Most of us find it very challenging to sit still.
We would rather run around, keep busy, and check items off our to-do list than just be.
Even when we are chilling out, our hands drum on our knees, our thoughts wander to the past or future, or our eyes hungrily scan an iPhone or T.V. screen.
So before you try to bang out the most advanced yoga poses you can find on the pages of Yoga Journal or Instagram, try the most basic tenets of yoga of all, being present.
The next time you’re waiting in line, riding public transportation, or perching on the toilet, notice the temptation to whip your phone out for distraction.
Try to observe the urge rather than immediately give into it.

Set Specific Goals And Let Them Be Your Motivation
What is the reason that you are trying to get more flexible? Is it because you want to do the splits? Is it because you saw this certain pose and just HAVE to be able to do it? Is it because you want to relieve your lower back pain?
Find your reason, and set that as your goal. Let it motivate you to get on your mat every day and stretch it out.
For me, the biggest goal I have had since starting yoga is to be able to do the splits. I am fairly tall, and VERY inflexible, especially in the hamstrings. I have to work at it EVERY DAY, but I do, because I want to get there and know that I can with practice!
Yoga Is Not A Religion
For the uninitiated Westerner, there’s a lot about yoga that may appear “religious.” Certainly, there’s a spiritual element to the practice, but it’s essential to understand that yoga itself is not a religion.
“This comes from yoga’s Indian roots where mantras and chants have been used for many years,” says Brad Ormsby of Freedom Genesis, a yoga and meditation blog. “They’re meant to bring focus and help you awaken internally, but they’re not required to practice yoga.”

We all confront hundreds of daily distractions that zap our focus from the NOW and transport us into “busyness” as usual.
Yoga reminds us to breathe, carrying us away from the monkey mind and back to the tranquil mothership of peace that exists right here, in the present, at the center of the self. Therefore, all yogis consider themselves beginners in this practice.
And, just by showing up on the mat consistently, we arrive at the big realization that with nothing to perfect the practice, it simply teaches the art of “BE-ing.”

How Long Will I Have To Hold The Poses
This depends on the type of yoga class you takefor example, a slow flow or hatha class may require you to hold a pose for an extended period of time. But in vinyasa, “it comes down to the intention of how the posture was designed,” says Ewing. “For example, balancing poses are held longer to benefit concentration and focus, while transition postures build strength while teaching fluidity in movement.”
For the most part, though, poses are held for three to five breaths during the first round to help them sink into your memory. Then they’re held for a single breath when you repeat the pose, to help amp up the cardio component of yoga.
