How To Find A Yoga Retreat

#6 How Experienced Are You

If youre a beginner, you can look for a retreat specifically geared towards people like you. An immersion into yoga practice is a wonderful way to ground yourself in the basics with the support of a teacher, and retreats with a beginner focus will start from well, the beginning.

On the other hand, if you have more yoga experience, check whether a retreat caters for that, or whether the teacher will offer variations and progressions for different levels.

It wouldnt feel great to be the only beginner on a retreat packed with experienced yogis and vice versa.

Which Yoga Retreat Is Right For Me

How to find a yoga teacher for you

We are often asked by prospective guests which retreat, teacher or style of yoga they would enjoy most. Our short answer would be that most retreat weeks are suitable for most people. Quality and experienced teachers are one key to great yoga holidays their care and understanding should make their particular style accessible and enjoyable to all. Having said this certain styles and retreats may appeal to different people. So here is an all too brief guide to the asana practices you can find at Yoga Rocks.

Ashtanga vinyasa yoga is one of the most physically demanding styles of yoga. It is a set sequences of poses, either led by the teacher or self-practice/Mysore style. In the self-practice method everyone works through the set sequence to their ability in their own time, holding each position for 5 breaths and receiving help from the teacher as needed. Ashtanga yoga retreats at Yoga Rocks are suitable for anyone, though it helps if you have a reasonable level of fitness. This style of yoga encourages fast physical changes and after a week here you will have a personal practice and the confidence to continue it at home. Some people love the physical nature of an Ashtanga retreat. By the time they have finished their morning practice they really feel they deserve making a holiday of the rest of the day, and can relax, guilt free, on a beach, with a book or in a hammock. Others find it a little strenuous if they dont soften the practice, approaching it joyfully.

Yoga is one of the worlds most popular wellness practices and for good reason.

Beyond its roots as a spiritual practice, yoga has been scientifically proven to improve flexibility, relieve chronic pain, reduce inflammation, and ease stress and anxiety.

Yoga studios have popped up all around the world and many now offer retreats to exotic locales where fans of the practice can shut out the world and focus on their breath for a few days.

The downside?

These retreats can also cost hundreds to thousands of dollars to join!

Thankfully, you can go on your own yoga staycation for a fraction of the price without ever leaving home.

You dont have to travel to Bali or Tulum just to get the benefits of a retreat. With a little preparation and an internet connection, you can create a relaxing DIY yoga retreat that rivals those offered by some of the top yoga teachers around the world.

So where do you start?

Below is a sample yoga retreat schedule full of wellness retreat activity ideas that you can recreate.

Youll discover more than a few ways that you can travel at home by going on a yoga retreat right in your living room!

How To Find A Yoga Retreat That Youll Actually Enjoy Dont Make This Mistake:

Well, in the case of the two women in Malibu, they simply hadnt thought to ask about the practice space at the villa. They just assumed theyd be practicing in a nice yoga space, which was not an unreasonable assumption.

So when the villa turned out to be, as one of the women put it, just some house the teacher found on AirBnB, and they discovered that the practice space was the living room which meant they had to move all the furniture around before and after every practice the women decided this wasnt the retreat for them.

Now, this may not have been a big deal for you. There are plenty of people who dont mind moving furniture to practice yoga.

Yoga retreats can be incredibly rewarding, wonderfully memorable, and deeply transformative experiences.

But whether it would have been a dealbreaker for you or not, it might also seem like a situation that could easily have been prevented if the women had asked a few more questions.

But as yoga likes to remind us, present-moment-sight is rarely as clear as hindsight. And the reality is that there are all kinds of important questions that people never think to ask before deciding on a yoga retreat. And then later, they wish that they had.

The moral of the story? Ask questions!

Build Your Own Teaching Environment

Step ahead of the yoga mat, dont just stretch your legs indoors but take your potential out of the yoga studio room. What I mean by this is, think beyond your imagination and dont stay limited to your beliefs.

You can either create an opportunity for yourself by teaching yoga at any school, colleges, or other places instead of looking for a resort. Use your talents wisely towards your progression. This will give you an experience and a better chance to work at a yoga retreat. Create your own teaching environment which works in your favor and then you can use your learned skills about mindfulness more efficiently.

Tips For A Successful Yoga Retreat At Home

Having your own yoga retreat at home is pretty easy, all you have to do is commit to it.  However, there are some things we thought you should know before you start. So, here are a few tips to help you out:

Try not to eat 2 hours before your yoga session or youll feel uncomfortable. If you dont want to do your morning class on an empty stomach you can have a light breakfast like a cup of coffee and a slice of bread.

We put the journaling part after breakfast because this is when I like to do it. But a lot of people enjoy writing in their journal when they wake up or before going to bed. Choose the time that suits you best!

In the PDF version of our at-home retreat schedule, we added 5 affirmations for you to say out loud every day. Try to do this as soon as you wake up to give a good start to your day.

There is a lot of free time in our schedule because we know you might be busy with kids, or other commitments. If you cannot commit for 3 days, try to do this yoga retreat at home for a least one day, itll still be beneficial.

If you do not want to practice yoga by yourself, we have included links to youtube videos, including sessions on the channel Yoga With Adriene. We only linked to youtube channels that we love and enjoy using for our own wellbeing.

Go to bed early, at around 10 pm, so that you feel well-rested. Getting a good nights sleep is key to a successful yoga retreat at home.

Choosing The Right Time

The first step to booking your much deserved yoga retreat getaway is to select an appropriate time that suits your schedule. You want to make sure you choose a time where you wont be stressed or worrying about things that are going on back at your job or regular daily life.

You also need to decide how much available time you have for your getaway. Are you in need of a simple short weekend for a bit of healing to reignite your passion for life or do you think you need to escape for a week or more?

Yoga retreats offer escapes that range from just a single day to several weeks. If you find you currently have a lot of commitments, dont let that stop you from at least taking a weekend break. More time doesnt necessarily equate to a more fulfilling experience, so be assured that even a short yoga retreat can rebalance your life and get you back on track.

How To Create Your Own At

How to find and use your voice in yoga

Krista Bugden

Feeling stressed? Overwhelmed? Got some time off coming up? This is your opportunity to create your very own home yoga retreat.

You dont have to spend thousands of dollars to jet off to Costa Rica or Thailand for a top-notch yoga retreat. You can incorporate all the retreat-style amenities and activities as part of your yoga practice at home.

In fact, you might actually find this type of retreat a little more refreshing and easy-going. You pick your schedule. You choose your activities.

So, lets get to it. Where can you start? What do you need?

Breitenbush Hot Springs Retreat

For those who want to take a quiet break from the stress of modern life, Breitenbush Hot Springs Retreat, located in the Oregon Cascades, is an ideal option. You can choose a day visit or a personal retreat that includes lodging in a 1930s-era rustic cabin that has been refurbished with geo-thermal heat for year-round use. Among the many popular amenities are the hot spring pools, steam sauna, organic vegan cuisine, forest trails and, of course, the daily workshops in yoga, meditation, EDGU and other holistic practices.

Sewall House Yoga Retreat

A popular, off-the-grid getaway since 1997, Sewall House in Island Falls, Maine offers several yoga disciplines along with massage and sauna sessions. The idyllic setting is also ideal for canoeing, kayaking, swimming, hiking or just meditating on the porch. Special workshops on writing, cooking, folk herbalism and other practices are also offered periodically on their calendar.

#10 What Group Size Would Suit You

The number of spaces on a retreat is often overlooked as a deciding factor for retreat attendees.

But different retreat holidays cater for different group sizes and that will affect the overall experience. If youre very sociable or feel uplifted by the energy of a big group practicing together, you can choose a yoga retreat that hosts a group of 15, or even up to 30 people.

However, if youd like lots of personal attention from your teachers and a sense of quiet and intimate community, a small retreat of 5-12 students might be better.

Are you ready to hit the reset button?

Before I made a commitment to my own health and well-being, I was a stressed out corporate executive using my yoga to keep me somewhat balanced. It took going on a yoga retreat, to a place I always wanted to visit, to reboot my life. I went not only because I needed a vacation, but also to find clarity and direction. My health was suffering, my heart was uncomfortable and I knew I had to choose a way of living that would keep me on the path to growth.

If you feel the need to refresh your spirit, reignite your passion for living, and rediscover balance in your life, then a yoga retreat is what you need. Here are 10 key considerations when choosing a yoga retreat:

Step 2: Create Your At

One of the easiest things you can do for yourself is to create a schedule. While you dont have to stick to it completely, this can make deciding what to do with yourself that much easier and more relaxing.

Here is where you want to decide what you want to fill your time with. You can do lots of yoga, , plan meal times, practice gratitude, recite , journal, and more.

Youll also potentially want to let your friends or family know you wont be available during certain times of your home yoga retreat, just so no one gets too worried when you go MIA .

If you want to get really creative with your own schedule, look up other yoga retreats and try to mimic what they do!
