How To Do Cat
Cat-cow pose is my absolute favorite;warm-up;posture. It feels wonderful first thing in the morning, or after a long day spent sitting, or as;active recovery;from a tough workout.
This gentle flow is appropriate for yoga students of all levels, and is excellent for the spine. While technically two poses, cat and cow are almost always paired in yoga, with cow pose on the inhale and cat pose on the exhale. As such, cat-cow stretch is a good way to start learning;vinyasa yoga, which links your movements with your breath.

Beginner Tips For Doing Cat
Once you get the hang of cat-cow stretch, you can start to customize the flow. Cat-cow is one of the classic yoga postures that should be used for exploration, says Openfit Executive Director of Fitness Stephanie Saunders. Sometimes changing the placement of the arms, the angle of the hands, or the width of the knees can open up new possibilities and give you a sense of where you are in your practice today.
Here are some other pointers for cat-cow.
Variations Of Cow Pose

- Seated version: Sit on a chair or in an easy cross-legged position. Place your hands on your knees and open your chest on the in-breath. Add the Cat Pose on the out-breath.
- Standing version: Stand with your legs hips width apart, knees bent. Place your hands on your thighs and open your chest on the in-breath. Add the Cat Pose on the out-breath.
- From all fours, try creating a wave-like motion, moving your tailbone first and allowing your spine to follow.
- Make a Cat Cow sequence into a core awakening exercise by extending out your opposite arm and leg in Cow pose and then drawing the elbow back and the knee to the nose as you draw your belly in and round your back in;Cat pose.
- Alternatively, use Cat and Cow pose as an exploration of the spine as in Lisa Petersens class;Spinal integrity finding your curves;.

Yoga For Beginners: How To Do Cat Cow Pose

Where youre new to yoga or have some experience, welcome to the Yoga For Beginners series where I discuss the poses, technique, breath, and benefits. I decided to begin this series for many reasons, but mostly because I keep seeing the same things crop up time and time again. So I figure that Id begin a series of yoga pose basics. In this post I want to discus how to do Cat Cow pose. Part of a warm up movement in yoga that often gets overlooked.
Benefits Of Practicing Cat
The Cat-Cow pose has plenty of benefits. Check them out to know what can you expect with consistent practice of the Cat-Cow pose.
Flexible Spine
Too much sitting, bending forward, or staying in a single position minimizes the range of motion of your spine. That is where you should practice the Cat-Cow pose. It enhances the forward and backward movement of the spine. Moreover, it relieves any stiffness due to improper posture or living habits.
Massages Knees
The knees are one of the complex joints that need proper care and nourishment. Kneeling while practicing Cat-Cow pose gently massages your knees. Moreover, it releases joints fluid that ensures your joints remain moist and lubricated.
Strong Neck Muscles
Looking up and down while breathing in and out strengthens your neck muscles. Moreover, it releases stress from your neck and muscles surrounding your shoulders. Furthermore, it has a positive impact on your upper body and smaller spinal joints.
Better Scapula Engagement
Scapula muscles are there to support your neck and shoulder muscles. Moreover, they are responsible for better engagement of upper back muscles and generating more power in your arms. Practicing the Cat-Cow pose improves the scapula engagement that ensures your upper back and neck have maximum stability.

Tip
As you extend your spine and lift your tailbone and crown of the head upward, allowing your torso to descend toward the ground, inhale and imagine charging up your body, mind and spirit with revitalizing energy.
As you flex and round your spine, exhale fully, drawing the navel to the spine and creating space between your shoulder blades. Imagine letting go of anything that does not serve you physically, mentally or emotionally.
Abdominal And Pelvic Floor Activation
Are you working on strengthening your pelvic floor muscles to prevent or treat incontinence or pelvic organ prolapse?
When you curl into Cat, try exhaling as you pull your lower belly up towards the spine. You can think of zipping all the way from the pelvic floor muscles and scooping through the lower abdomen if that is something you are working on.

Who Is This Posture Good For
This posture is a gentle warm-up that can be a nice start to a yoga practice.
I also like Cat/Cow after Ive been sitting for a while and want to get some segmental movement into my spine. Anytime we are moving the spine we will have a direct effect on the pelvis.
Additionally, most adults need more opportunities to move in a variety of ways as we are often stuck in prolonged sitting postures during the day. Standing or seated Cat/Cow is a posture you can easily do at your cubicle or home office.
Enjoy and move easefully!
How To Perform Cat
In yoga, certain poses are paired together because theyre complementary, which promotes balance. You might see;childs pose;paired with a headstand, or a;seated forward fold;after a full wheel pose. Cat pose and cow pose are teamed up for the same reason: because they move the spine through its full range of extension and flexion.
While you;can;do cat or cow pose independently, your spine will thank you if you do both. Cat pose rounds your back to give it a good stretch, while cow pose arches your back, dropping your belly to stretch out your front side.

Strike A Yoga Pose: Cat Pose To Cow Pose
A wonderful way to start off any yoga practice is with a round Cat Pose to Cow Pose. Often abbreviated as Cat-Cow, the combination of these two poses helps warm up your spine and relieves back and neck tension after a long day. It’s an amazing addition to a solid home practice or a perfect way to loosen up before a studio class.
Sanskrit Name:English Translation:
- Begin with your hands and knees on the floor. Make sure your knees are under your hips, and your wrists are under your shoulders. Begin in a neutral spine position, with your back flat and your abs engaged. Take a big deep inhale.
- On the exhale, round your spine up towards the ceiling, and imagine you’re pulling your belly button up towards your spine, really engaging your abs. Tuck your chin towards your chest, and let your neck release. This is your cat-like shape.
- On your inhale, arch your back, let your belly relax and go loose. Lift your head and tailbone up towards the sky without putting any unnecessary pressure on your neck. This is the Cow portion of the pose.
- Continue flowing back and forth from Cat Pose to Cow Pose, and connect your breath to each movement inhale for Cow Pose and exhale on Cat Pose.
- Repeat for at least 10 rounds, or until your spine is warmed up.
