How Much Does A Yoga Therapist Make

How to become a yoga teacher – College of Therapy Yoga

In my opinion, yoga jobs pay very well. There is a wide variety of opportunities to make your own schedule and to teach/conduct therapy in person and on different online platforms.;

Weve done some research and found that as of February 2020, the average yoga therapy position pays $58,000 to $65,000 per year. It really depends on your geographical location and the nature of your practice. We found yoga therapy positions that paid as low as $18,500, and as high as $128,500.;

Not only geography and the type of practice can determine how much a yoga therapist will make per year. Working for a hospital will not only give a yoga therapist a nice yearly salary; theyll also be eligible for insurance benefits.;

However, if you set out on your own to open up shop as a yoga therapist, youll have to pay for your own insurance, as well as rent on a building, advertising and marketing, website, and a whole host of items needed to run a business. You may even have to pay staff, if you hire associates, a receptionist, etc.;

Yoga Instructor And Teacher Job Opportunities

After completing your yoga teacher training studies and gaining a qualification, several exciting employment opportunities can become available to you. The list youre about to read is far from an exhaustive one, but it should give you some idea of the many available routes.

Do remember that you dont have to be tied to one specific type or place of work. The most versatile and successful yoga teachers involve themselves with as many opportunities as possible.

Heres where yoga instructors and teachers can find work and apply themselves:

  • Working with clients on a one-to-one basis
  • Teaching yoga as part of an exercise referral scheme*
  • Teaching classes in a boutique yoga studio
  • Creating and distributing online classes and workouts
  • Teaching freelance classes in mainstream gyms, health clubs and leisure centres
  • Working on cruise ships or teaching classes in holiday resorts
  • Teaching classes on fitness retreats, either within the UK or overseas**

* As discussed, this requires the Level 3 Exercise Referral Diploma

** To learn more about the exciting opportunities that can be found with general fitness or yoga-specific retreats, be sure to read our interview with Antonia Johnston, notable HFE graduate and co-founder of the internationally-renowned YogaFit Retreats.

Physiotherapy Vs Yoga Therapy: Whats The Difference

1. physiotherapist

It is fair to assume that generally the client approaching the avenue for yoga therapy will be seeking help for their physical conditions. But in that case, does the expertise provided by the physiotherapy not good enough? Why would they even consider yoga therapy? The answer in this case lies in what separates yoga therapy from physiotherapy. Its not that one is better than the other. Rather than their approach to dealing with the clients concern and their focus is simply different.

A physiotherapist is trained to focus on the material side of the problem. They focus on the body alone. Moreover, they are extensively trained to help clients with all areas of the human body and are knowledgeable about all kinds of medical disfunctions. While they are not medical doctors they are trained in diagnostic tests to identify the roots of a clients physical problem and they perform passive techniques to help the body relax which leads to comfort and ease for the client.

2. Yoga therapist:

It is fair to say that ideally, a combination of both physiotherapy and yoga therapy will lead to the best possible health benefits for a client. There are many cases and especially in regards to serious medical or neurological conditions for which both physiotherapists and yoga therapists have to stay in contact. They share updates and exchange information periodically to help the client make a recovery through sessions.

    Definition Of Yoga Therapy

    Yoga therapy is the process of empowering individuals to progress toward improved health and wellbeing through the application of the teachings and practices of yoga.

    Yoga is a scientific system of self-investigation, self-transformation, and self-realisation that originated in India. The teachings of yoga are rooted in the Vedas and grounded in classical texts and a rich oral tradition. This tradition recognises that the human beings essential nature is an unchanging awareness that exists in relationship to and identification with the changing phenomena of the empirical world.

    The yoga tradition views humans as a multi-dimensional system that includes all aspects of the body; breath; mind; intellect; and emotions and their mutual interaction. Yoga is founded on the basic principle that intelligent practice can positively influence the direction of change within these human dimensions, which are distinct from an individuals unchanging nature or spirit.

    The practice of yoga therapy requires specialised training and skill development to support the relationship between the client/student and therapist and to effect positive change for the individual.

    Pay And Salary For Yoga Instructors And Teachers

    Most yoga instructors and teachers will be paid on an hour-by-hour basis for the classes they teach. On average instructors and teachers are paid between £20-50 per hour. Pay and salary can be wildly different depending on the area of the country and the specific employer. For example, you might expect a boutique yoga studio in the centre of London to pay significantly more than a mainstream gym in the north of the UK.

    Self-employed yoga instructors and teachers could potentially earn more, but again that is dependent on other factors including the demand for yoga and competition in a given area.

    How Do You Become A Certified Yoga Instructor

    This depends on what kind of instructor certification you would like to receive. If youre looking for yoga instructor certification from Yoga Alliance, then you will want to do your yoga teacher training program with a registered yoga school or the Yoga Alliance. It is not necessary to get your instructor certification from YA, though, as its just a private organization that is not connected to any government requirements to teach yoga.

    Otherwise, look for a yoga school that has a long-standing good reputation and join their 200-hour yoga teacher training program. This will cover all of the basic knowledge of yoga, such as yoga philosophy, the history of yoga, the Yoga Sutras, teaching methodology, human anatomy and physiology, and the yoga postures.

    Reasons To Take A Yoga Teacher Training Taught By Yoga Therapists

    Director at Breathing Deeply Yoga Therapy

    Before you can enroll to become a certified Yoga Therapist, you need to complete a 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training.;

    These types of training are easy to find, but which one is right for you? If becoming a Yoga Therapist is your goal, then completing a 200 hour yoga teacher training created and led by Yoga Therapists is the way to go. Here are three reasons why:

  • You dont have to play catch up.;Although there have been attempts to standardize 200 hour training programs, the truth is that they vary widely. Its not uncommon for a training to focus heavily on physical postures, strictly adhere to a lineage, or be more devotional or spiritually based. None of these are wrong, but as a Yoga Therapist, you need a wide range of knowledge. For example, if you have not been exposed to practical anatomy concepts, fundamental yoga techniques like bandhas and mantra, or have spent any time with yoga texts, there will be gaps in your education. As a result, you will not be able to take in the nuanced instruction that makes yoga therapy certification training so valuable.
  • When deciding which yoga teacher training to enroll in, the choices are endless and can be overwhelming. It can be difficult to know how to vet the training and the teachers and it can be tempting to choose a quick and/or cheap training. However, in the end, cutting corners only short changes your education.;
