How To Become A Yoga Instructor In The 21st Century
To understand how becoming a yoga teacher has evolved from years of apprenticeship to month-long training, we need to look at yogas evolution in the last century. During the first half of the 20th century, two critical shifts happened: Yoga became more focused on asanas physical practice. Over the same period, this new physical yoga made its way to the West, gaining fast-growing popularity.
To respond to the increasing demand for yoga teachers, yoga schools started appearing worldwide, and programs were developed to mass-produce yoga instructors. In the 1990s, a group of instructors began to discuss the need to establish a national standard for yoga instructor training, and from this, Yoga Alliance US was born.
Today, the typical path to becoming a yoga instructor is to follow a 200 or 500-hour yoga teacher training with a reputed yoga school. These are offered in various formats, last from a few weeks to a few years, and are delivered in-person or online. Selecting the right training involves considering the style of yoga you wish to learn, the time you are willing to dedicate, and the learning environment you want to surround yourself with. Also Read> > > 10 Things to Consider when Choosing your online yoga teacher training

How To Become A Yoga Instructor In The Traditional Way
Formal yoga schools only made their apparition in the last century. Before that, and for 5000 years, learning how to become a yoga instructor was akin to an apprenticeship. Pupils would follow their guru or gurus for years, absorb their knowledge and follow their teachings, until one day, the guru would send them into the world to start spreading their knowledge.
Established in the 1940s, the K Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute in Mysore India was among the first institutions that formalized yoga instructor certifications through this format. Ashtangis, invited to Mysore to practice at the KPJAYI year after year, for weeks or months at a time, may one day receive the instructors blessing to be an authorized Ashtanga teacher. Now headed by Pattabhi Jois daughter and granddaughter, the school still operates with this model.
Aside from Ashtanga yoga, you can learn to become a yoga instructor through an apprenticeship in any yoga style by following an expert instructor or gurus teaching over several years. Learning how to become a yoga instructor through this model can provide in-depth learning of the practice and pedagogy through mirroring the instructor.

For young yogis, practicing the same flows over and over again may sound tedious. Changing poses has its benefits. But for seniors, changing the poses and flows too often may be confusing.
Also, with age comes age decline. Repeating poses help them to learn the poses and to develop the mind and body connection. To keep your classes not boring, change the sequence of the postures.

What Should I Make Sure To Bring With Me
You will be practicing yoga six days a week, so make sure to bring enough comfortable options. But no need to over pack, there are laundry services where you can get your clothes washed.

Yoga Instructor And Teacher Qualities
Its important to note that those who are qualified in yoga and lead classes can be known as instructors or teachers, so you may seem these terms used interchangeably. With most popular forms of exercise, those who partake are known as clients or class participants, with yoga they are referred to as students. Because of this, those who lead yoga classes are commonly known as teachers.
Its not enough for a yoga teacher to simply stand at the front of their class and relay information and impart knowledge. They must truly master the principles of the practice, become an authority in their own right and act as a role model to their students. A yoga instructor or teacher will primarily teach a combination of poses , breathing activities and relaxation and meditation techniques.
The best yoga instructors and teachers have:
Keen observation skills needed to assess how asanas are being performedSensitivity and empathy students will vary in age, prior experience, body shape, ability, and even temperamentStrong communication skills both verbal and non-verbal are keyExpert knowledge about asanas and other techniques its a must that you lead from the frontA commitment to self-practice and development yoga should be seen as a lifelong journey, rather than a hobby or pastime

Know To Modify Or Direct The Poses And Sequences
In a mixed level class of students over age 50 with many physical problems, especially in ongoing group classes where it is not uncommon to have new students drop in, I recommend starting with simple lying down poses that are generally safe for everyone, yet challenging for more experienced students, such as leg stretches, hip openers and twists. Be sure students with a rounded upper back have adequate support under the head, so their head is level, says Francina.
How Do I Find A Job As An Instructor
Many fitness facilities and community centers will hire newly certified yoga instructors, but just e-mailing your resumé is usually not enough to get yourself on the group fitness schedule. Visit local centers and chat with the front-desk staff about the group fitness program. Buy a guest pass and take a class to better understand the population at each center. You may be asked to teach a demonstration class, and its important to think beforehand about what level and style of class will suit the centers participants.
Once you have a feel for a facility, find out who the group fitness director is, and ask to meet briefly with him or her. Inquire about adding your name to the sublist. If the director agrees, ask for permission to observe or take a few classes so you can offer a great experience when your time comes to teach.
New instructors can also propose a series of yoga classes to organizations and communities where they are already involved. For example, you could start a lunchtime class in your workplace, offer an afterschool class to teachers at your kids school or launch a yoga group at your church. Dance studios and martial arts centers may also be interested in adding a yoga class to their schedules, for either kids or parents. In these venues, extensive teaching experience will matter less than the fact that you are part of the community.
