What To Expect Out Of Your Yoga Teacher Training
Doing an intensive yoga teacher training on a retreat is one of the best decisions you can make. Dedicating several consecutive days to yoga will allow you to embrace all the benefits of the practice and truly immerse in its philosophy. See it as a more holistic approach to learn all aspects of yoga and not just the technical part on the mat.
These courses are designed to cover all your basic needs, from accommodation to meals, so you dont have to worry about anything but learning and practicing yoga. Theres a defined program in which you have to cover 100 hours on the mat polishing your technique and understanding proper alignment.
The other 100 hours are spent learning about yoga philosophy, its history, teaching methodology, communication skills, anatomy, physiology and observing other teachers to see how to lead a class and structure a yoga session.
The time will be limited, but its always possible to find moments to talk with your fellow students, make new friends or just relax in the venue facilities.

How Do You Become A Certified Yoga Instructor
This depends on what kind of instructor certification you would like to receive. If youre looking for yoga instructor certification from Yoga Alliance, then you will want to do your yoga teacher training program with a registered yoga school or the Yoga Alliance. It is not necessary to get your instructor certification from YA, though, as its just a private organization that is not connected to any government requirements to teach yoga.
Otherwise, look for a yoga school that has a long-standing good reputation and join their 200-hour yoga teacher training program. This will cover all of the basic knowledge of yoga, such as yoga philosophy, the history of yoga, the Yoga Sutras, teaching methodology, human anatomy and physiology, and the yoga postures.

Find Your Niche As A Yoga Teacher
The market for teaching yoga is becoming more saturated everyday. This fact alone makes it increasingly important to find your niche as a yoga instructor.
Are you great with kids? The elderly? Maybe youre bilingual and can teach in more than one language. Whatever it is, find what makes your offering unique to set yourself apart from the rest.
Would It Make You Uncomfortable If Your Yoga Teacher Was Fat
This is a deeply personal question, though not uncommon. Many students feel that their vinyasa yoga teacher should be the epitome of fitness, though it would behoove us to remember that they are not actually fitness trainers ) Rather, pay close attention to how they epitomize the yoga philosophy. Because you’re there to learn about yoga, right? And that’s what truly matters.
And if you’re just looking for a yoga training that focuses on the physical aspects of yoga, such as the yoga posture and alignment, then remember that a registered yoga teacher knows how to do that regardless of his or her size. And that teaching yoga is very different from doing yoga. If you’re truly worried about who the lead teacher is in your prospective yoga teacher training course, then shoot them a message and see what they’re like. You might actually really like what the lead teacher has to offer 🙂

Yoga Teacher Training Certificate Of Achievement
This yoga instructor certification program prepares students to meet the requirements to become a 200-hour registered yoga teacher with Yoga Alliance. Yoga Alliance sets forth widely recognized standards for yoga teachers and teacher-training programs, including the minimum number of hours of training in each of five areas: teaching methodology, techniques of teaching, anatomy and physiology, philosophy and lifestyle and teaching practicum. This comprehensive and wisdom-based program provides students with a broad background and practical experience to enhance their teaching skills and to build confidence in meeting the diverse needs of future students and populations. After students earn their status as registered yoga teachers they can apply for positions at yoga studios, health and fitness centers, country clubs, recreation districts, hospitals and health and wellness centers.
What Certification Or Training Do I Need
Basic Training. There are no universal agencies set up to provide examinations and certifications for yoga teachers as there are for group fitness instructors and personal trainers. Instead, the standard baseline training for a yoga instructor is a 200-hour contact program, meaning you spend 200 hours in a hands-on learning environment. Programs like this may offer their own certification. Some 200-hour programs consist of an intensive monthlong retreat experience others space the training over two years in a series of weekend workshops or several long retreats. Specific styles or schools of yoga may have additional requirements, including mentoring with experienced teachers and having ones personal yoga practice and classes observed and evaluated.
Although it is possible to obtain a specialty fitness yoga certificate or online certification in less than 200 hours or through home learning, it will not be recognized by Yoga Alliance, the national registry of yoga instructors. Yoga studios are unlikely to hire an instructor who has not completed a 200-hour training. And while many certified fitness instructors with limited yoga training find themselves teaching yoga in fitness facilities and community centers, even traditional fitness managers expect new yoga instructors to have a 200-hour certification.

Youre Not Just A Teacher Be An Entrepreneur
My misconception: I thought I had to be physically present and teaching yoga in order to earn money as a yoga teacher.
When I burned out and needed to take a month off of teaching, I got super creative with how to make money. There are more ways to earn cash teaching yoga than simply adding classes.
Some tidbits that I do between classes include:
- Pulling together all the yoga newsletters and email blasts at my studio. I put effort into learning how to use email marketing programs by taking tutorials.
- Online yoga classes. I did this for a while and earned a pretty penny.
- I do social media and very basic work-from-home admin work for studios too.
- I link my workshops to well-known or local yoga brands and create affiliations that help me market my events without me being present. These events are my biggest paying items all year. These same brands will sometimes supply clickable buttons to put on your website so you get royalties from purchases made through that button. You can do pop up trunk sales via this too. If you eventually become a brand ambassador, you often get the same benefit with Instagram discount codes too.
- You could write for your favorite online yoga publication
- Mentoring. If you are an experienced teacher, use your experience in the field to mentor someone that is struggling. That is part of teaching yoga!

Yoga Teacher Certificate Requirements
As we mentioned, you must complete 200 hours of coursework to work as a certified yoga instructor from a Yoga Alliance approved program. The coursework includes hands-on work, class evaluations, and mentoring.
For taking your training certification program to the next level, there are many 300-hour yoga teacher training and 500-hour programs to advance your teaching expertise and skills. Moreover, such programs allow you to work with special populations such as chronically ill individuals, pregnant women, or special needs children and adults.
As you become certified, you will also need to have insurance to protect your business while you work. Getting liability insurance offers legal protection, and various insurance companies in Europe and the U.S. provide it.
To find an insurance company in your area, you can run a basic search online to review different options by comparing the costs and requirements. As soon you get the coverage statement, copy or print to keep it in your certification folder.
Whats In A Yoga Instructor Salary
There seems to be more than a little bit of confusion surrounding the average salary of a certified yoga instructor.
In the United States, yoga instructors make an average of $24.96 per hour, making anywhere from 31K-100K, with the national average clocking in at wait for it $60K.
Real US dollars, not Monopoly money.
Now, depending on where you live in the United States, the notion of a $60K annual salary might sound pretty sweet.or wholly underwhelming.
To reach that figure, you would basically have to teach 26 yoga classes per week for a whole year, at the rate of $50 per class. This hourly rate is shall we say, not extremely commonplace.
Which is why when someone asks so, whats an average salary of a yoga teacher? you cant just throw out five-figure salary figures and shout NEXT QUESTION!

How Do I Find A Job As An Instructor
Many fitness facilities and community centers will hire newly certified yoga instructors, but just e-mailing your resumé is usually not enough to get yourself on the group fitness schedule. Visit local centers and chat with the front-desk staff about the group fitness program. Buy a guest pass and take a class to better understand the population at each center. You may be asked to teach a demonstration class, and its important to think beforehand about what level and style of class will suit the centers participants.
Once you have a feel for a facility, find out who the group fitness director is, and ask to meet briefly with him or her. Inquire about adding your name to the sublist. If the director agrees, ask for permission to observe or take a few classes so you can offer a great experience when your time comes to teach.
New instructors can also propose a series of yoga classes to organizations and communities where they are already involved. For example, you could start a lunchtime class in your workplace, offer an afterschool class to teachers at your kids school or launch a yoga group at your church. Dance studios and martial arts centers may also be interested in adding a yoga class to their schedules, for either kids or parents. In these venues, extensive teaching experience will matter less than the fact that you are part of the community.
